More than one copy installed?

Is it possible to install more than one copy of Thunderbird at once?

I could really make a case for needing three copies...

One for old, classic personal email. (Several years old, but I still reference some technical messages occasionally. And I just simply don't want to loose it.)

A second one for my current personal email.

A third one for business mail.

I took a look at it and I tried to do it by changing some stuff in the app\appinfo\appinfo.ini file but it doesn't look that's enough.

Yes

Just install the first one to X:\PortableApps\ThunderbirdPortable. Then next to X:\PortableApps\ThunderbirdPortable2.

Or just wait a few days for the launch of secondary (and tertiary) profiles for Thunderbird and Firefox so you'll only need one copy of the app but can have multiple profiles (complete sets of mail and settings) and have them all work with the menu.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Thanks

I was trying to consolidate a couple USB sticks, which is why I was trying to just copy the stuff.

For some reason, it just didn't occur to me to install a second copy fresh and move the data.... (grin)

And I'd rather have seperate ones, than multiple profiles.

It'll help keep things seperate, easier to back up, etc.

Thanks.

Still Separate

The upcoming secondary profiles will still be completely independent of each other, in different directories, and work with backups. It'll just save you on having multiple copies of Thunderbird itself and having to update all 3.

Really? This is the first I've heard of this. Nice! I have two copies of Firefox Portable at home. How's that going to work out?

Yeah

It's gonna be a secondary launcher that utilizes the launcher from the main Firefox instance with an INI to point it to the right places. That way, when you update your main copy of Firefox, you don't have to worry about updating the secondary profile's launcher, too. It'll be a separate app and hopefully never need updating (but if it does, the updater will handle it, too). You can move an existing profile from a 2nd install of Firefox Profile into this new secondary launcher and it'll continue to work, letting you free up space by ditching the second copy of Firefox and have one less thing to worry about updating with each new release.

does it have to be separate ...

as opposed to just having multiple account in one program? I check 5 different email address from one instance.

Don't be an uberPr∅. They are stinky.

Yup, seperate

Yup, I'd rather they be seperate.

That way, for example, my personal email and business email wont accidently get mixed up.

My own personal email already does multiple email addresses. But sometimes seperate is better.

Well, I have a Portable Firefox for me and a Portable Firefox for my wife. We both use MySpace, GameFAQs, ScoreHero, Google/Gmail, and various other sites, so yeah, it kinda does have to be separate, at least if we want it to remember our logins... and we do. Plus, I use a ton of extensions she doesn't care about - I think all she has is Adblock Plus, and the half-dozen or so that make GameFAQs relatively presentable (GameFOX, Text-to-Image, Linkification, etc.), so hers boots faster than mine.

If it were just Gmail, I'd say yeah, use the extension Gmail Manager, but it's more than that.
