Thoughts on removing the Firefox enable vs disable session store on first run

I'm debating removing the current prompt to enable or disable session store on first run of Firefox Portable. 3.5 has improved performance of the storage on flash drives due to some bug fixes just for Firefox Portable over 3.0. I'm wondering if folks out there are still running it with session store disabled or not. And, if those who have a slower drive and are running it off could try enabling it and see what the performance difference is.

Thanks!

Maybe put the option in the ini?

I run it without session store, not because of a slow drive, but more because I just don't see the need to enable it. I think it would be ok to remove the prompt, but if you're going to do that, it would be nice to be able to change it in the ini. At the very least, tell users how to disable it somewhere.

We Will

We'll still have info on the FFP support page including the settings within Firefox to change.

Hmm, I'll have to try it

Hmm, I'll have to try it enabled. I knew they'd made some portability-specific optimizations, but I didn't realize this was one of them Smile I'll give it a shot and post back.

Seems to be working much

Seems to be working much better. I for one intend on keeping it enabled now Smile I don't have a particularly slow drive or anything, but I agree that it probably isn't necessary in the launcher any more. If a user wants to disable it, let them do it in Firefox itself. The launcher doesn't disable the phishing filter or handle any of the other speed fixes, so there isn't really any point in having it handle this one.

Originally

Originally, we did it because there is no option in Firefox to disable it except in about:config.

Ah, I can understand that

Ah, I can understand that then. I'll try it out over USB 1.1 and see how much difference it makes there, since right now I'm using a decent drive on a fast computer... we'll see how less ideal hardware handles it.

1.1

1.1 is slow no matter what. And exceedingly rare nowadays. We're not going to base this decision on that. It's more a matter of current average speed drives vs Firefox 3.5 with its performance enhancements.

I just meant that by slowing

I just meant that by slowing the whole thing down, the difference might be more noticeable, and then comparing that to FFP 3.0.x I could see just how much improvement there really was.

NOOOO!!!

I vote no!!!

I'm running it with Session Store but I also think the prompt is a good idea that should stay.

It helps users know what's happening with their copy of Firefox Portable.

What's Happening

It's not about informing anyone of session store or what it does, that's not our job. Regular Firefox has it enabled by default.

This is only a matter of performance and whether we're at the point that enabling doesn't have the hit it did in 3.0. Once we're at that point, the question of whether to enable it going out the window.

Go

I vote to remove it, mainly from a launcher code point of view (you know what I mean, simplifies the generic launcher etc.). Also it makes it so that the user will get more the normal Firefox experience which I think is what's best.
