DS emulator

I found an open source DS emulator. The site to download is here: http://www.double.co.nz/nintendo_ds/dsemu.html. The source is also there. Please make this portable.

Does it work?

Ah, but does it actually work? The NDS is a funny little gadget. Two 4:3 screens, one on top of the other, and the bottom one is a touch screen. The latest iteration of the hardware includes two 0.3MP/VGA (640x480) cameras, and though the screens are a little larger, they have the same resolution as the first two DS models.

Emulation of control isn't tricky; you have a gamepad and a mouse, not a problem. You can't really do anything with a DS you can't do with a gamepad and mouse, and for the most part, vice-versa.

The tricky bit is the graphics, which are comparable to the Nintendo 64; in fact, Super Mario 64 was ported to the DS, as was the original Resident Evil (a PlayStation game). Dementium: The Ward and Moon are two FPS games for it that look similar to Quake II.

One emulator I tried, the No$ one, worked OK for one of the Castlevania games, a 2D adventure side-scroller with some fancy artwork, but it slowed to a crawl and fell flat on its proverbial face when I tried Legend of Zelda, an isometric 3D cel-shaded top-down adventure. I imagine the recent GTA game would give it similar headaches.

Interesting idea. Can't wait to see how it handles Lego Rock Band this November. It'll be the first time a Rock Band title will be playable on the PC, albeit illegitimately.

Not emulation

That isn't emulation. That's running the code natively, as a Nintendo DS is capable of running Nintendo DS games. It is not capable, however, of running NES and Super NES games, but yet you can play them (perfectly in the case of the former and barely in the case of the latter), and that is emulation.

The GBA function and the NES

The GBA function and the NES and GBC and SNES on flash carts are emulated.

What I said

The latter is what I said.

GBA is not emulated and cannot be executed from the device's Slot-1. While emulation is theoretically possible, I haven't heard of it done. If you have GBA games on your Slot-1 microSD adapter, you've got a Slot-2 device you're copying them to, likely to PSRAM, and likely with an app called GBAXPLoader, IIRC, something like that.

I used to have a black DS Lite, R4 + 2GB Corsair microSD in Slot-1 and 3-in-1 in Slot-2. I know most of what's commonly known and a bit of what isn't about NDS aftermarket modifications. But, I was mainly playing Castlevania games on it, and the L and R trigger buttons both went out on me. So I gave it to my mother-in-law who only plays touch screen games like Flash Focus and Brain Age. Funny thing, I never messed with theming the R4, but tried my hand at it... it's real easy! Gave it to my nephew as a birthday present. Now every month it's got a different picture of someone in the family, all the menus are custom, it's real neat. I wish I would have learned that when I used it. Oh well. And all I regret not having a DS for is Scribblenauts and the new Zelda coming out... and if they ever get around to making a sequel to Professor Layton, that game was sharp. Wouldn't mind having another GBA:SP though.

Just an idea

I thought it would be fun to have a DS emulator portable for everyone to use. Also it would be a great add to the collection of emulators.

iDeaS

Although it isn't open-source, iDeaS is probably the most active Nintendo DS emulator you can find. Unlike others like No$GBA, iDeaS is frequently updated and all version releases are free. Not to mention that it's released on both Windows and GNU/Linux. I'm sure a launcher could be made for it if requested.
