After numerous failed attempts to download the full application Suite I am wondering why there is not an official p2p/torrent release like OpenOffice.org has. I find that to be the fastest and most reliable way to download. It not just for pirates

it would speed things up

bad idea, here is why, those torrents will still be floating out there even when they become outdated, we don't want that, we want full control and what we have gives us that ability at this moment, maybe in the future we may consider it but I think John wants to keep with sourceforge.net

It works for OpenOffice.org. They have a link to the torrent from their site and its always current. If your stupid enough to download an older version from somewhere else you deserve it. Like I always say, " You can't fix stupid!"
It's not like there aren't torrents of portableapps.com software out there. I am downloading one now. Would have preferred to get it from an "official" link, but after more than a half dozen download attempts failed I stopped being picky!

There's honestly no real reason or advantage. We use SourceForge.net which utilizes a worldwide network of mirrors in 21 different locations. All with high-speed links (I just checked Voxel, the one SF picks for me here in NYC, and got 3MB/s down). And, I believe, every one is resumable.
If you're having trouble with a specific one, please let us know and we'll check on it.
We have no plans on using torrent for anything official. So, everything you download from torrent is from someone else and you should be sure to check the digital signature of it.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Using DownThemAll! in FF 3.5.x, I couldn't resume. I got my new flash drive yestarday so now I have enough room for PortableApps :D.
Insert original signature here with Greasemonkey Script.
Because the Suite isn't outdated, it's got the latest versions of the Platform, Firefox, OpenOffice, and VLC. Wait... it doesn't... so is "outdated and out of our control" really that much better than "outdated by choice" or whatever?
I just downloaded PortableApps.com_Suite_Setup_1.5.2_en.exe and it has OpenOffice 3.0.1 yet the latest official PAF release is 3.1.

Yeah, that's why Linux-people are always using old versions ....
You CAN take down a torrent, you CAN have reliable statistics,
you CAN have "full control" .
But you can't shut down a torrent hosted on a public tracker. And even if the public tracker is down, the DHT feature will still manage to find peers to download from.
There are a number of reasons why we only want our own SourceForge mirrors - other mirrors are unwelcome. One is management, as suggested above, the other main one is statistics; just as we can't control other download sources, we can't count them.
I am a Christian and a developer and moderator here.

But are statistics really that much more important than reliability, if reliability is even an issue? I'm with JTH on SF's reliability - they've been funny, but never completely unreliable, site downtime excepted.
In any case, the Suite and a ton of other apps, legal and otherwise, are already available on BitTorrent, just not in an authorized fashion. Just search for "Portable" and see what comes up. The 1.5GB torrent I saw was shocking and amazing at the same time. It had the Suite, all the apps from this site, and... a whole lot more.
Just how reliable are your statistics? I attempted to download PortableApps.com_Suite_Setup_1.5.2_en.exe from the official link at > 6 times and every one failed. Did each of those count as a download.
FYI: I tried dloading it from 2 different computers on two different internet connections using Firefox 3.5.2. Got between 2 and 120 meg each time before it stopped. Resuming was not an option because firefox thought it was a complete download. There was nothing to resume.
The torrent I downloaded took a while because there was only one seed but it worked.
Good luck with those statistics,
Paul
except for just recently, sourceforge is having problems, but most areas in the usa seem to get sourceforge 100% recently
I've thought about this quite a bit, even compared it to the OO.o torrent system, and realized that I come to agree with the opinion here that it really isn't in the best interest of this site to release via BitTorrent. It actually does make sense for OpenOffice.org. They have one product, but it is released for several operating systems, with different releases for each language. Statistics would be ugly at best, and not really very useful. Also, when a new version comes out, all of the releases get updated at once (give or take some lag for some platforms/languages)
Here, each app only has a single official release, each updated on completely different schedules. When a new release comes out, it supersedes any previous release. There aren't 15 different concurrent releases for a single app. None of the apps here are actually created by PortableApps.com. True, some of the original app devs have either done the PAF work, or have contributed in some way, but Firefox is developed by Mozilla, Pidgin and WinSCP have their own authors, etc. They aren't developed here. Because of that, there are a wide variety of apps here, but only one release of each, so the "old fashioned" single-server (in this case with several mirrors) system really is preferable.
To use another example of another open-source project using "official" torrent releases, take Ubuntu, or many other Linux distros. It makes sense for them because of the size of their releases. I would not want to download a full CD .iso file over http without download resuming (which, btw I have never managed to resume a download from SF, but then again that might be new with all of the changes as of late), nor would I want to have to have people using the kind of bandwidth it would take to download files that large from my server, especially when it's that popular. This reason again does not apply here. PortableApps isn't hosting 700MB files.
Also, SourceForge is a great host and a very reliable one as well. Granted there are some issues still lingering since their server move and total site upgrade (mostly the latter, but they both happened very close together). It's not easy managing a site like SourceForge. They host over 230,000 different projects, not only as a file host, they also host a multitude of project tools for each project. Issues are to be expected. If something doesn't work, try a different mirror. Voxel is usually great, I also use Superb-West and Internap a lot. If all else fails, try the master server (even if it isn't in the list, just type master in the ?use-server=xxx part of the url).
