Makes sense

Well, that makes sense then. I don't believe I've ever used the feature in Windows before. Never saw a point. Well, I guess it does look nice, especially when coupled with the wallpaper swapper.

Not in my experience. I've disabled desktop icons, but I can still click (Vista).

XP Sp2

Well, to his, mine, and the Platform's credit, I'm on XP Pro Sp2. Vista made significant changes to the desktop. I'll try when I get home, too, though that computer's roughly the same (XP Pro Sp3). Haven't got Vista, can never get it to run right.

Missing Icons

I am showing no icons for Abiword Portable, Mozilla Sunbird-Portable Edition or Sudoku Portable. The text is fine, so it's a long ways from a deal breaker. I love the uninstall function!

Everythings fine!

I got this running for a few weeks or should I say since it was released. No problems or glitches with anything running on:

EeePC 1000H
Windows XP Home SP3 (using Vista Inspirat 2.1 Theme)

It just fits perfectly with the height leaving the task bar visible at 1024x600.

Nice work!

autorun.inf

no bugs yet.

two suggestions:

- option to use an .ini file instead of autorun.inf, since I have disabled this feature to avoid malware.

- option to rename the "my music" , "my videos" and "my pictures" folders and links to other that might be more useful, like ebooks or books or PDF, and notes or "to DO" or anything.

and keep walking !!

Hiding Desktop Icons

The only problem I encountered so far is the following:
(But just because I didn't see the feature before!)

After hiding the desktop icons, they won't show up when switching them back on untill I reboot the System. Tried it about 10 times and it's always the same. Smile

I've seen it once on one XP

I've seen it once on one XP SP3 system at work, but my home system doesn't have any issues.
You may want to try just logging off and back on; that's usually enough to refresh any registry changes.

There usually aren't any

There usually aren't any feature or GUI updates between betas, it'll likely be bug fixes if anything before an official release.

In a word, no.

Sorry, dude, but there's no psychic, mystic, prognosticator, psychohistorian, reader or shaman in the world that can accurately predict that.

It's like waiting for the crocus flowers in the spring; you watch and watch, and just when you think they're never coming, the next morning they are there, like tiny colorful stars on your lawn brightening the world just a little bit more.

Possible Bug

I was using the check drive for errors it worked fine in the past but not sure what happened but every time I try to use it it loads and runs but has this message while scanning (Warning! F parameter not specified. Running chkdsk in read only mode.

1)Verifying files
2) indexes
3) security descriptions)

also the 3 options is all it checks it used to have 5 options I believe so was wondering what is going on.

Not a bug, just Windows...

This is a batchfile located in PortableApps.com\App\bin that does this checkdisk...
It looks like this:

@echo off
cls
color f0
title Checking %2 (%1) for errors...
echo Checking %2 (%1) for errors...
echo.
chkdsk %1
echo.
pause

But the command chkdsk has a few parameters, as you can see when typing "chkdsk /?" into the commandprompt.
One of them is "/f". This parameter repairs the faults chkdsk may find.

Btw, this is the same when doing a checkdisk trough graphic way (properties > extra): there, you have also 2 "options" that correspond to /f and /r respectively.

So you can add the two steps by adapting the batch file like this

@echo off
cls
color f0
title Checking %2 (%1) for errors...
echo Checking %2 (%1) for errors...
echo.
chkdsk %1 /f /r
echo.
pause

BUT beware that you will get an error, because windows wants the whole disk for itself when NOT only having to check the disk read-only...

Some suggestions

Since it's still in beta, I want to suggest somethings to change or add to the PAM 2.0.

Here they are:
1) How about we can choose whether or not we want the size of the PAM to adjust to the dpi setting. I want to resize it at will and make it as small or as large as is nessesary for my needs. The dpi format is resonable but I set a higher dpi setting because I'm working with like a 15.4 inch monitor with like 1920x1200 res and I can't see anything (but the PAM 1.5.2 size was good but the 2.0 takes up 1/2 my screen)

2) Can we choose the drive letter that the flash drive is, if it is a flash drive? It would work alot better with many of the programs because the saves are based on where the last drive letter was or where the original drive letter was.

3) And maybe add the ability to add custom symbols to folders like the Docs, Music, Videos, and Portapps forlder (I like them)

  1. Can't comment on this one.
  2. None of our applications care where they're running from; they all update the drive letter in any configuration files, recently used lists, etc. However, if you want to change the drive letter, you can do so yourself, manually (search the web). I speak pretty confidently in saying that the PortableApps.com Platform will never do it automatically.
  3. That's coming (as mentioned by John in a few places). You can also theme them right now.

Now let's see what John says.

Actually, Chris Morgan is part of the dev team here at PortableApps.com and generally speaks for the site and the project.

As for #2 though, he's not joking or even supposing, that's entirely outside of the scope of the project and might not even be possible, at least not without admin access. #1 and #3 are coming, in some form or another, "when they come".

Me personally, I don't speak for the dev team, per se, I just follow the project pretty closely and base my statements on observations of posts by the dev team.

group launches?

I tried the auto launching, but then realized that there are times I want to run portable apps but not autolauch, I wonder about some way to group apps so I can launch the group if I want (normally I sign in at work and launch 4 apps, but when occasionally use it on a home machine, I don't want that behavior).

Plato seems wrong to me today.

Themes

This works great! The only thing I would like to see improved is the ability to not have to browse to a folder where I keep my custom themes in order to load them. aka if you could select any of your custom themes from the PAM options where the default (bronze, green, blue, etc)ones are.

I agree...
Categories?
pmlabrier - July 22, 2009 - 9:51am

For me all the new features (while great) are useless with out the long
promised "Categories" I must assume they have been abandoned since they
are not even mentioned in official postings about this release.

I will stay with PortableApps Menu MOD 1.1 R30.

Paul

I have to say, I wholly agree with that. I'm no programmer but if it is as difficult as they say then why not merge/copy, or learn from in some way, the R34MOD?

I love the PA.com platform, but since upgrading from v1.5.2 to the R34 MOD I have seen no reason to upgrade to v1.6 or v2.0beta3. I respect the hard work that must go into these programs, like I said - I'm no programmer, but the Official Platform simply doesn't offer the features I want Sad

The R34 MOD has categories but one thing I really like about it is that you can edit the theme's .ini file to add your own icons/shortcuts, it's a bit of a task to do so but it works Wink It's a bit like pin to start menu but the icons/shcuts can be placed anywhere you like on the menu. I've simply added 24x24 icons and made them a button that links to the shortcut and you can fit quite a few in the dead space on the bottom right of the menu!!! FANTASTIC!!

I would prefer the official menu for upgrade reasons and support, not that I've needed it so far, but you never know!

If only these ideas would be integrated into the Official Platform.....

dreeeaam... dreeeamm... dreeeeaammmmm.....

pleeease... add some sort of categories and pinning (drag & drop would be best) to the menu pleeease....

Smile Smile Smile Smile Smile

EDIT: Is there any chance of adding something like the MULTIMETER Sidebar Gadget, perhaps not so much the gadget itself though that may be easier, but I mean the ability to show the info for processor/cores, RAM, down/upload speed, date/time, free space for all drives, check here for info on this gadget -

http://thehobbylounge.com/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=f80b30dc75772c74c458...

I love this gadget and it'd be great if the PAP could do something like this.

Refresh

Something that i knowtised was every time i boot the menu it refreshes the icon list. Is this something wanted? I think think that it would be nice not to have the menu refresh every time, because that slows down boot up time when you get tons of apps. (SRy for spelling errs to LZY to fix them.)

If I understand you correctly, you would like it to save the icon list so that the boot time can be sped up.

Scrollbar request

Would it be possible to have the option of a "real" scroll bar, rather than just the up/down arrows at the top/bottom of the app listing? The arrows are a little too subtle for me. While I understand why some people would prefer them, I'd prefer the "traditional" scroll bar.

A scroll bar would be a more visible reminder that you have more applications available -- on my thumb drive the scroll bar wouldn't appear, but on my portable HD it would.

I'm just concernced about the speed of the menu. But at least it shows a progress bar now. I've started using ASuite and Appetizer (still testing) as my app launchers until the menu gets faster, keyboard jumping, OR the updater.

I don't find the speed to really be a problem, not too bad for me.

One thing though...purely out of curiosity...;)

With all the extra features, like the updater, themes, and other things...
Will all this make the menu load slower?

If so, will it be substantial, and will there be an option to disable some features to increase speed?

Well... I worked with this a bit and i really like it. The only thing i didn't like tho... Maybe two things. I don't know if it has been mentioned before, but here they go-

1) the auto hide function. Some of the internet cafe's around here has some sort of alternate interface thing that prohibits me from getting to the system tray. I'd like an option to stop it from minimizing.

2) is it maybe possible to get a more basic look. Sometimes when i use the application it takes a bit long to load and when i move it around it lag's a bit.

Sorry. I'm bad at explaining stuff.

Oh... And is it possible that we can add and edit folder(s) on the right side of the application?

1) the auto hide function. Maybe someone can verify this, but the auto hide can be changed within the ini file, located in X:\PortableApps\PortableApps.com\Data (It could be altered in the older versions.)

2) is it maybe possible to get a more basic look? Look for an older version of the PAM menu here, maybe vers. 1 0r 1.5, Vers. 1 is about as basic as you can get and 1.5 is an upgrade of 1.5. It has a couple of added features.

More then I have. I've

More then I have. I've restarted using the PAM and have cleared out some of my apps. But some of those apps just got moved to a different folder Biggrin I don't use them so much, so I don't need them in an instant.

When I go using a computer, I usually start:
Firefox, Spicebird, XChat, Miranda. PAM Auto launches Appetizer which floats in the top middle of my screen. ( To bad that's where my task bar is on my machines.)

Appetizer has Geany, Notepad++, Screamer, and some other things. I use those, but they aren't always on. That menu stays at the top, always open, so I don't have to waste an extra click. Other apps stay on the PAM Menu. Those I can get to fairly quickly. Other apps that I use are in another folder, with no menu. I just browse there, then start ***Portable.exe.

But yes, if you have that many apps installed, its better off to use Asuite.

I used to have tons of apps, but I've tapered down alot. Probably about every 6 months or so I redo the system I'm using and try to make it gel better for myself. Of course, sometimes this results in big changes. I don't think that ONE system will ever work correctly for all time. The key is to make everything flexible.

Speed?

If you find PAM to slow, and ASuite not, then keep using ASuite. I have over the 200 apps installed and it takes a little time but keep in mind that using a USB stick drags time.
Keep in mind that traversing a directory tree and extracting applications takes time. AND IT HAPPENS ONLY ONCE.

I don't like ASuite. I used it one day, and only one day, and discarded it!

BTW I used all program-launchers out there. And PAM/PAM-MOD stand out! PAM is the better one! But on the devices that have more than 30 apps installed I use PAM-MOD until the categories are implemented!

Version 2.0(beta) does it all for me, apart from the categories!

I'm a developer and some of the issues addressed here I fixed for myself, and I understand that the development team of PAM adresses these issues also. I have studied the source and have seen that implementing categories will not be easy. And the comment of one of you to use the code of the MOD has two flaws: 1. it isnotthat easy! 2. The origional programmer of the MOD has to give permission to use his code, what will be of no concern. But he fell of the earth! His site is dead! His last entry on that site is from 2007!

Big.BearKeep in mind that traversing a directory tree and extracting applications takes time. AND IT HAPPENS ONLY ONCE.

Actually, it happens every time you start the Platform. Not sure if that's what you meant, but just to clarify. Also it happens again when you Refresh App Icons, and it takes about the same amount of time.

Proof: Close PAP and eject the drive. Reboot Windows if you want it to be a really pure test. Get a stopwatch, put the drive in, and time it from the time you tell Windows to run PortableApps.com Platform (or double-click StartPortableApps.exe in root) to the time the menu shows up with all the apps (make sure it doesn't start minimized. Now do Refresh App Icons and watch as it takes pretty much the exact same time. I don't think it takes much time at all (a second or two) for the menu to load into memory; most of the time is, as you say, traversing the directory and extracting the applications. Categorizing, actually, but same difference. And then exit the menu, and move half of your AppNamePortable directories from \PortableApps to the Desktop, and start/time it again. It'll load nearly twice as fast.

Big.BearI'm a developer and [...] the comment of one of you to use the code of the MOD has two flaws: 1. it isnotthat easy! [...]

Really? Not that I doubt you; Angel I'm not a developer and (b) I know nothing of Delphi 2006 or any version, but I've hacked together a couple UnrealScript (based on C++ I think) packages for the Unreal Engine 1 game Deus Ex, basically took features I liked from smaller mods and integrated them into a popular gameplay mod. It was stupidly easy to do things like allow silencers on rifles, allow weapons to be fired underwater, increase the player's ammo carrying capacity 100,000-fold, and other "variable" and "switch" changes like that, and while a little taxing, not all that much harder to make some bigger changes. It was mostly copying and pasting.

How much harder is it, than finding the category code in the MOD's source code, and looking for the same section in the official source and pasting it in? See, the official menu basically catalogs all .exe files two levels down (the first level being \PortableApps, and the second level being any folder therein), and the MOD does the same, only it looks for a .pafdata file (plain-text) which gives the app's name (if renamed) and the category name (if categorized). Seems to me it's just an additional step after parsing the app list.

It's trivial because you need Delphi 2006 which is no longer for legal sale (and when it was, it was expensive - $800?) to compile the Platform, and also as I have no experience with that language, but as a developer, respectfully, what more is there to do?

Unrealscript is different.

Unrealscript is different. Not starting flames or anything, just saying.

I can hopefully assume correctly that a notes field wouldn't be to hard (repeat reading of the appinfo.ini with a notes field), but I think catagories would be hard. I'm sure John has changed the code so much that the code in the MOD is sorta unusable now. (Unusable as in the copy\paste sense for the new Beta, not as a base point or something like that)

Check Disk for Errors

You need to give capability to "Check Disk for Errors" to Run as Administrator. I had to run it manually to make it work.

Good Ideas on Autostart Feature?

The autostart is a great improvement over the previous! I tend not to autostart many applications, but the one "LightScreen Portable" is great if it is started automatically from here, instead of adding to the Windows Startup folder.

If there could be some visual indication that an application is marked for autostart, it would be a good idea as well. A thought is that when one clicks to deselect an application from autostart, and if the application is already started, there could be a prompt to ask of to unload the running application.

To add to the possibility that some may find it annoying of the prompt, it could be an option to "Prompt to unload autostart application" at the option menu; or there is a "Do not ask again" option at the prompt dialog (link with the option).

- END.

Themes and Vista

Interesting thing... I could not apply custom theme on Vista, but then I tried on XP, and it worked just fine. Anyone have any idea why would that be?
Also, it would be better, in my opinion, to keep all themes in same location, and new ones to show listed, just like "native" ones, just like when you drop a new app, and "refresh app icons"...

I love what you did with the PA so far. However, I still use GeekMenu, and only because of Category capability. The very moment PA comes out with it, it will be the only menu I will ever use. Till then, I will stay with GeekMenu, but will watch closely PA development. I really hope I will switch back to PA very, very soon. Keep up the great work. Thank you.

The ideal of categories or folders have been ask for repeatedly and promised often but it is clearly not a priority. I will stay with the MOD menu util this feature is added. I am not holding my breath though.

Looks good

It looks good. Not what I was expecting -- was just talking about "blacked-out" cars on another board, so I was expecting some doom & gloom -- but that's real slick, real professional-looking. The triple arrows (for scrolling) and sorta-rainbow space gauge are a distraction from the rest, but it's not a deal-breaker, and it looks nice.

Themes' own section...

I realy love all those fine-tune-cosmetic changes you did. It is realy shaping up into beautiful app.
One sugestion about themes... You probably want to include (not in forum) another page/section between "Suite" and "Forum" (from top area of your site), that would hold all approved themes. We could send it to you for approval, and/or packaging, then you can post it there just like you do "Applications", including author's name and preview. That way, we don't need to wonder around to find custom themes.

Thank you.

Comment about the new platform

This platform is a big improvement from previous version. There is something that I like to comment. I hope the apps' names font can be in bold form. I also hope you can retain the function which shows the drives total size and the amount left when the cursor is hovering on the apps icon in taskbar. That's all I can comment.
can't wait for the official release. Good luck guys!

Custom theme and transparency - Help

I just finished one theme (my first), and I want to share it here, but I'm stuck with one problem. I'm sure this is trivial, but I just can't get it right.

- The transparency area. Top left and top right should be rounded and transparent. If I make it transparent in GIMP, it looks OK, but when I run it, it gives me black color instead transparent. If I paint it pink, it looks transparent on Vista, but on XP I still see pink. Can anyone help me with this?

- What is purpose of "background_opaque" file? It seems like there is no difference if I have that file in package or not.

- Is there a guideline on how to make theme?

I used GIMP, but I will use what ever I need to make it work.
Thank you for your help.

Looks good but...

Are you sure it's ok to use XP's native icons? I don't mean to be a party pooper as I thought this looks nice but Microsoft aren't normally very accommodating with regards to letting others use their gear. Hopefully I'm wrong Smile

Infringement

You're right; that's the problem with most of the XP/Vista/7/OSX/whatever OS themes which people do; they take things from the core system, which is illegal, copyright licence infringement. I think that it should be fixed, or the link removed (I can remove it but for the moment I think it's minor enough or whatever that I'll just serve a notice).

Yes, I am aware that this may cause some issues, but I don't know how far we can go with it. The actual theme is served of "box.net", and here is only the link, so PortableApps.com may be in clear. Again, I'm not a lawyer, so I'm not sure...
I do not want to put this site in trouble, so if you think I should remove it, let me know.

Still illegal

It's still illegal for us to host references to it etc. You won't be able to remove the links, as people have responded directly to the comment which locks it for you, but I can (I'm a moderator). Seeing as it's a minor and possibly questionable thing, are you happy for me to remove the links?

Is it possible to integrate custom file association (portable) feature into PA, just like it is done in Xenon File Manager? That would be FANTASTIC!

Categories (or folders) are probably the most requested and most ignored feature. Not sure why that is, but it is. Don't hold your breath, simply use the unofficial PortableApps.com Menu MOD r34 until the Official PAM catches up.

just one sugestion

hi! i absolutely love this and i think nothing can make me stop using PA.c.

just a sugestion:

i think it would be better to reorganize the documents folder structure to be more like Vista/Linux (X:\PAHome\Documents | X:\PAHome\Music | X:\PAHome\Pictures) instead of XP (X:\Documents\Music)... because if you store a "Downloads" folder, for example, it doesn't fit right inside a Documents folder, if you understand what I mean. Just think it would be better that way, so you can store every kink of files without them being stored in a place they don't belong.

I guess this way later could be added an option to edit the standard folder list in the right space of the PAM...

Hope someone will hear my prayer Blum

Love this software, and John, at this rate you'll become my Idol Biggrin keep up the good work
