Any testers?

Seems like another release from my collection of most wanted/popular PortableApps Wink
Or does nobody like the education category? Maybe I should move this to Music&Video. Blum

cool program, but..

Its a really neat program, but I'm afraid I don't have a huge use for it as I only read music, I don't write it. But the program installed and ran fine on my computer. Using not Admin, XP SP3. Again, looks like a great program if I needed to write music.

Yeh, you should move it. As a musician, I've been waiting for this for ages. I tried to make this myself but to no avail. I didn't know where to begin! Thanks for doing this for the community!

Hey Bart.S

Unfortunately I'm not a musician so can't really test this too much. Will try the usual run and close with Regshot to see if it's working. However can't really help with the functionality as well, only instrument I ever played was guitar and I stopped that when I as nine Blum (14 years ago).

Anyway if your looking for suggestions for more popular open source apps just say the word Wink Anyway will do the regshot when I get home.

Hi Bart, I have been testing

Hi Bart, I have been testing both this program and Tux Guitar for some time now. They are similar but do have differences. Tux Guitar will compress with UPX and still run without problems. Using a trial version of thinstall, I got Tux down to about 18 Mb. I think that it is an easier program to make portable.

P.S. Tux Guitar is natively portable & when compressed with AppCompactor gets down to 28 Mb It is also open source. http://www.tuxguitar.com.ar/download.html get the package Windows-x86 GCJ Native Release

I think

there is a difference between the 2. TuxGuitar is mainly for guitar players and has more features for them, whereas MuseScore is a more general music notes editing/composing program.

Correct - That is why it is

Correct - That is why it is called Tux Guitar.
You can turn off/hide the guitar specific features.
They both are music composition programs.
There are good points in each program which is why I am still trying to decide which one that I prefer after several months testing. Mind you, when you consider 28 Mb against 114 Mb and native portability - well you guys can do the math!

Back to topic

Hey guys, thanks for your interest here, but I think this discussion is a little bit off topic.
I don't search or want to discuss alternatives to MuseScore Portable. MuseScore Portable is ready for testing, that's all. I don't search other popular apps for making them portable either. I make apps portable, which I'm using myself.
Well, MuseScore Portable is an exception, because I'm not a musician and I don't really need it. I made this for a friend of mine and with a little feedback I could improve it further (for him and for you).
Cheers!

Crashed once, but I can't recreate.

In testing around a bit, the program crashed once while I was trying to click notes onto the score, but I can't get it to happen again. The Portable version seems to have the same functionality as the original program.

It does seem that the notes are cut short during playback - a whole note sounds more like an eighth note with rests filling the rest of the measure. I don't know if this is a sound-card setting or what.

Thanks for working on this app.

Not clean

OK, so it's leaving two directories behind.
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\MusE
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\MusE\MuseScore

This, on Vista (English), would be C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\MusE... it's getting it with CSIDL_LOCAL_APPDATA, which in NSIS you will need to use a DLL call to catch (Shell32\SHGetSpecialFolderPath)

See http://nsis.sourceforge.net/Getting_the_%27My_Documents%27_folder_for_al... for reference. I've modified the function, below, changing it to using 0x1C (CSIDL_LOCAL_APPDATA).

Function GetLocalAppDataPath
  Push $1
  Push $2
  Push $3
  Push $4

  StrCpy $1 ""
  StrCpy $2 "0x001c" # CSIDL_LOCAL_APPDATA (0x001c)
  StrCpy $3 ""
  StrCpy $4 ""

  System::Call 'shell32::SHGetSpecialFolderPath(i $HWNDPARENT, t .r1, i r2, i r3) i .r4'

  Pop $4
  Pop $3
  Pop $2
  Exch $1
FunctionEnd

It looks to me as though a simple RMDir on the second and then on the first should do it. (Note: not with /r)

Thanks very much,

horusofoz and Chris. I missed these folders and I'll look into that.
Oh, and thanks Chris for your modified function, but first I'll try the NSIS variable $LOCALAPPDATA. If that doesn't work, I'll take a closer look at your suggestion.

Whoops

(Insert embarrassed look!)

I didn't look at the documentation to see whether it was there, although if I'd thought properly I would have expected it to be...

Yes, use $LOCALAPPDATA!

Dear MuseScore developers,

please change the czech locale code to "cs" and use that for your next releases. Thanks! I believe "cz" is used for license plates only Blum

Shrink it to 25 Mb

I've been playing with this again & have shrunk my install to about 25 Mb.
You can use UPX on everything except the "iconengines & imageformats" directories - they are off the Bin directory. The demo files & directory can be deleted to save about 5Mb. The program is working perfectly after this.

Oh no :(

Tested the MuseScore 0.9.5 RC. Now it uses the registry, $LOCALAPPDATA, $APPDATA, $TEMP. Argh, hopefully there is an easy way to redirect the settings (environment variables or commandline parameters).
Note to the world: My old launcher is useless for the new release Sad

Please

Please try to update it with the new release. I used the portable version of this quite a bit, and I hope you can make the new release, with all it's updates, work portably.

EDIT - 0.9.5 final version was released today.
