Hi All,
I was hoping to skip Vista and go directly to Windows 7, but got a bargain notebook that I could not pass on.
The migration from XP to Vista Business was not as smooth as I was hoping for and thought it a good idea to have a post on it. The idea being to make it easier for others who will be migrating. I would also imagine some of these guidelines would still be relevant when migrating from XP to Windows 7.
The first thing to realise is that you will now have to use "run apps as administrator" i.s.o. simply running it if you do not wish to disable UAC. This thread https://portableapps.com/node/12568#comment-95512 goes in quite a bit of detail. But simply using run as administrator allowed all my portable apps to work when using PAM to launch them. (I'm using PAM 2.0 Beta 3.)
I have not found the reason why you will not be able drag items from your desktop onto an app that's already open (i.e. mplayer portable), whereas double-clicking on it with Café Mod enabled (managing the file associations) will work without any problems.
To get some other (non PortableApps) apps to work from my USB HDD to work I had to share my drive. By default Vista (Business) makes the USB drive read only and by sharing it the read-only status is removed. This I think is related to what John talks about in the link/thread above by having to format your drive from vista with security off.
Finally if you're used to connect/map drives to other/older network drives, you might have to alter Vista's default security setting by making it more flexible. This link describes the process http://www.buffalo-technology.com/knowledgebase/users/kb.php?id=10010&ca...
Please link to this thread or add hints/tips that other users that's new to Vista might find useful.
Thanks
Paul
You don't need UAC to run apps from an external flash drive unless it's setup as NTFS and you didn't disable security descriptors.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
