Personal Journal (Encrypted)

I would love to see a portable journal that is encrypted.

Welcome Doug

Welcome Doug to PortableApps.com Smile

Could you possibly give us some information about an opensource journal program you would like to see made portable?

A link perhaps?

and again,
Welcome Smile

Two app solution?

While there are probably journal programs that can handle this type of encryption, using a pair of programs may be a better answer. TrueCrypt is a free and open solution to the encryption issue, providing the ability to encrypt individual files, folders/directories, or even full volumes. You can also hide the encrypted folder so the casual user doesn't even realize it is there! Then, you can use whatever journaling application you find works the way YOU are comfortable. If you use a portable app, like Notepad++, you can even keep the program in the encrypted folder so no one seeing the journal app, looks for the data file. In addition, if you need to have other encrypted files, like pictures or recordings, they can either be in the same encrypted folder or in a different one with its own key.

Wiki On A Stick is a browser based personal wiki that has the ability to encrypt individual pages... You mean something like that?

Awesome

I read this post last night, when all messages posted to this board were shot down by that spam filter, and tried out WoaS. Liked it so much I wrote a wikiHow article about it, even mentioned using it with Portable Firefox and putting it (the WoaS .html file) in the Data directory and bookmarking it.

I have a few ideas for what to do with mine, but its main purpose will be to help me write a story I've been working on for a while. It's just an adaptation of a game, nothing I expect to publish, but a couple authors have said they wish they could make every copy of their first few books disappear forever, so I figure I'll get my experience with a couple adaptations, stuff I can't sell for profit anyway. A wiki is really good for this because I can link terms (e.g. character names, organizations, etc.) and keep notes. I mean, I know the game, but I'm trying to expand on everything a little, fill in the blanks, color it in, give it a third dimension. Make it something the reader can feel and believe. Can't do that so well with Notepad++, heh heh.

A wiki's strongest selling point over other formats is that multiple people can edit it. Take that away and it's really no more than a website, just a really intelligent one.

Evernote 3, so far closed

Evernote 3, so far closed beta, but you can apply for it, or i can Invite a few people who would like to try it
it can encrypt text inside the notes, but not the whole notebook, at at least with 1 click

if you or anyone else would like a invite to try it post your email here, and I'll send you an invite within a day or 2, registering for the beta may take a few weeks before they get back to you

oh and Evernote 3 desktop version can install a portable version on a USB stick Biggrin

Lead, Follow, or get out of the way.

Interested

I myself would be very interested in a encryptable journal. I did a little searching and came across these on SF though dont know if there encrypted (Which is essential considering the content).

http://sourceforge.net/projects/monsterjournal/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/journal/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/rednotebook/
http://qorganizer.sourceforge.net/
http://powerjournal.sourceforge.net/

If anyone has any ideas for this would be really appreciated as I really need this. Thanks.

If you are a "keep it simple" type of person, there are two very simple programs for keeping encrypted text.

Cryptnote

Locknote

They are both single executable files that don't do much besides let you enter text and keep it encrypted when not in use. Thus they are both portable.

But they are also very simple, like typing in a one page document. If you only need a way to put a date and then some text, and the next day put the next date and some more text below the previous day's, these would work pretty well. They are supposed to also be good at storing passwords and such. But they don't do much in the way of formatting, indexing, animation, dancing girls, transparency, or skins.

I have reviewed the blurbs about them, which look pretty good, but I haven't checked carefully to make sure they don't "leak". In other words, evaluate them yourself and decide whether they will do what you want.

Freemind?

Oh, almost forgot -- some people use Mind Mapping software that way. FreemindPortable can make encrypted mind maps. Again, I haven't checked whether its encryption is implemented well, and it probably isn't for everyone, but it might be worth a look.

Thank you for your suggestions

The encrypted text pads look alright however they are only equal to current measure of a OpenOffice doc encrypted with Toucan.

Freemind looks like a great piece f software but is not really what I am looking for.

Thanks again for the suggestions and please keep them coming.

RedNoteBook

After looking at the apps this seems the way to go. It does the basic journal function and it does it well. Some of the other apps are very good but they either do things un-required or wrong language etc.

Anyway this lloks like a good go. It's written in Python and says its OS independent which, I pray, means it can be ported without further adue. What kind soul out there is willing to port this cute little RedNoteBook in the window Smile

Cheers

There is a windows installer on the RedNotebook page. Not the bleeding edge version, but theoretically it installs and runs.

I unfortunately need a portable version of RedNoteBook so I can record certain events from a number of locations as they happen to ensure the accuracy of what I am writing. Don't suppose you want to take up the torch on it Smile

Can now be made portable

Recently the author of RedNotebook informed me that the latest version of RNB has a built in portability feature which can be accessed by:

Jendrik: Just install it to a usb drive and set portable=1 in the file "files/default.cfg".

Anyone interested in putting this in PAF? The app is GPL and written in Python. It doesn't unfortunately have native encryption features but I think using Toucan or 7Zip you can conveniently protect your files for the security conscious. You can find RedNotebook's website here. Thanks Jendrik for developing the capacity for portable usage Smile

I'd suggest the comparison to

I'd suggest the comparison to OpenOffice + Toucan misses a couple of things.

  • the encrypted text pads are each one single application, with no need to run a second
  • OOo has the ability to encrypt the contents of a document directly
  • Even with Toucan, there is still a question of whether there are any non-encrypted portions of the document saved as temporary files somewhere on the computer
  • theoretically, there is no need with the encrypted text pads to worry about those temporary files

If you know what to look for, and how to change some settings, you can probably assure yourself that temporary files are either encrypted or removed so someone can't recover them. But it is a whole lot more complicated to be sure you have taken care of all the little details with either encrypted OOo docs or some journal application plus an external encryption program. I'd say it's about an order of magnitude more complicated than one of the simple text pads. It's not overwhelming, just some additional things to learn and additional steps to remember.
