I only just came back to using Mozilla Firefox, but am quite impressed with the latest iteration, and how when I select "find new applications" from the Options menu it takes me to the website via this particular browser, when I thought it was going to open (god forbid) IE.
Now, what I'd like to know is can a link be put in the menu to Email support at portableapps.com because that would be the totally coolest thing to be able to access newsgroups and the like.
So what does anyone think?

If you check out the Help icon on the Platform, you will see it links to PortableApps/Support, which is a great starting place for all support.
It has links to all the support pages and forums for each portable app.
As for e-mail support, though, if you look at the Contact page
https://portableapps.com/about/contact
you can see that it says that "There is no support offered via email at this time."
The only e-mail links are for businesses, press, or to volunteer as a developer.
I don't think there are official newsgroups for Portable Apps, but I could be wrong. At least I couldn't find any reference to them on these pages.
Also, check out the Search icon; when you choose "Search the Web", it takes you to http://start.portableapps.com/

I want to use the program as a "launchpad" to things like eg mozilla newsgroups, but it would need a default mailing list subscription built in, not adware or anything but genuine information about portable applications, open source etc
I really hope the program can go this way because (no offence) web forums are so *old hat*.
Also, since you guys appear to be developing the future, can you please make your start page, country specific, or is that google the monolithic beasts' fault.
That's what Thunderbird is for. It can handle newsgroups, RSS, email etc.
The start page is a Google page; there's nothing wrong with that. It was John's choice to set up start.portableapps.com and I think it's a great idea: as well as people getting access to the best search engine, some of the revenue from any ads they click on goes to PortableApps.com. And that is definitely good. If you wanted to keep it off that, I'm sure John would be willing to accept million-dollar subsidies and change it to the main Google page from which you would automatically be redirected to the country-specific version

I mean can't it be coded, so I can do a country-specific search myself from that same page.
That's why I like bing because I can select Australia right from the word go.
I really don't understand why this hasn't been addressed at some level, or don't these web tycoons care.
Oh and about the TB thing, I just think it would be wicked to have an embedded link in the menu that opened the application ready with an email or subscription to a newsgroup, like the way Opera currently works.
It's all about standards after all, right?
Actually, listless, newsgroups are far older than web forums. They've been around since before the World Wide Web and web browsers - newsgroups were first started around 1980, while the Web only really started in 1990.
Mozilla newsgroups are a nice front-end to some really old technology!

Why would emailing [email removed by mod JTH] allow you "to access newsgroups and the like"?!!
Email is based on SMTP, and newsgroups on NNTP - it isn't even the same protocol!!!!!!!!
I think the OP meant a built in email address or list of newsgroup servers that mirrored the forum.
