I have just stripped out a version of FF to pass on to someone else and found in the cache there were some humongous files, up to 15meg in size, and heaps of randomly assigned file names.
What are they?
Why when you clear all the options such as history, pws, etc they still stick around?

First, what do you mean by you "stripped" it out? Also do the files show up in a clean install of Firefox Portable before you open it for the first time? If they show up in a clean install before it's opened they are probably required.

I made a copy of my ff portable and took out anything that was personal, such as the speeddial sites, the pw's and the bookmarks. That gave me a version for anyone to use that was up to date.
Anyway despite taking out the above items, using the usual clear/delete functions in FF. I found in \Data\profile\Cache some huge files still remained.
For example
_CACHE_003_ = 15meg,
_CACHE_002_ and _CACHE_001_ were about 8 megs each.
Then there is the random generated files such as 26FE2634d01 which all together make up 700 files!
In total this takes up 81.8 MB (85,843,090 bytes) of files!!
I just thought this would be dealt with then clearing out the above features. But they are not.
if others like FFP, and you want to give a copy to them, why don't you simply keep an installer on your drive?
And anyway your technically not supposed to redistribute FF or FFP.

I give my students a copy of my ff because its set up for webdesign with some hacks in it as well. Giving them the blank version and getting them to install the addons and config hacks is a waste of time.
Were those files there when you did a fresh install? If they aren't you could probably just make a fresh install then do the hack and whatever else in their then just give them a copy of that... That would probably be the easiest route.

Did you leave the cache to 0MB? That is the default for PFF.

I only see _CACHE files on LOCAL installs.

I emptied the cache, set the offline storage to 0 and then rebooted ff.
That seems to have fixed it, nothing has entered the cache so far.
Having cache set to 0 is the default (and should be used by all users on flash drives since enabling it slows down Firefox Portable).
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
