Enigmail and Lightning are in English language after I updated to portable TB 2.0.0.23 (german)

EDIT:
In this posting I describe a workaround for the problem: https://portableapps.com/node/20611#comment-127130

Hello,

after I installed the latest german version of Thunderbird portable 2.0.0.23 the add-ons Enigmail and Lightning are in English language. When I went back to 2.0.0.22 the were in german again. Any ideas?

Best regards!

Language packs

Lightning should include the german language, for Enigmail, you'll find the german lang pack here.

Welcome here at PortableApps.com

Search the web for the german extensions (They don't switch to english if you upgrade). In the past (last 4 years) I get my extensions from www.erweiterungen.de, but they don't continue their work from now on. Sad

I have the german language

I have the german language version of the add-ons installed and they were in german until TB portable 2.0.0.22. I only updated TB, didn't change anything on the add-ons. Going back to TB port. 2.0.0.22 solves the problem. So it appears to me that TB portable 2.0.0.23 somehow doesn't "tell" the add-ons that they should be in german. Am I the only one with this problem? @Bart S.: Do you have portable Thunderbird 2.0.0.23 german version with enigmail and/or lightning installed?

Just upgraded,

ok I had Thunderbird 2.0.0.21 german with lightning german installed. The upgrade to 2.0.0.23 works just fine and everything is in German (as it should be).
I guess you have a multilingual version of the add-ons installed, which change the language on upgrade. I have german extensions installed (They are named "Addon-name [de] version", if you look at the Add-ons -> extensions tab. The filename of the extension is for example "Lightning_0.9_tb_win_de-DE.xpi").

Edit:
Same problem has been reported long time ago, but I had never problems with extensions from the above mentioned website. It's really sad that the project is dying.

Thanks for your reply! In

Thanks for your reply! In your link (https://portableapps.com/node/15956) the problem was only solved, with the release of a new Revision "ThunderbirdPortable 2.0.0.18 Revision 2". Do you know, where I can look, what was changed from 2.0.0.18 Rv.1 to Rv.2? I can't seem to find a proper version history of TB portable.

I have the exact same

I have the exact same problem. Upgraded from TB 2.0.0.22 to 2.0.0.23 via paf.exe. Suddenly my Lightning is English. All the upgrades since TB 2.0.0.8 (at least) where successful without any problem.

Any idea why this happened?

It looks like a wrong language definition

Ditto with the French version of Thunderbird. My Lightning Calendar always worked in French until I got to version 2.0.0.23 of Thunderbird portable.

I double-checked everything:
– Tried a new profile (i.e. fresh copy of the program, no e-mails), and it's the same.
– I had to setup another computer with the desktop version of Thunderbird 2.0.0.23 and Lightning. She got her Lightning interface in French,
– Downgraded to 2.0.0.22, and my Lightning is now back in French.

P.S. It just strikes me that other multi-lingual extension appeared in English when I used 2.0.0.23 whereas they appear in French with 2.0.0.22; as if a language flag hasn't been set properly in versin 2.0.0.23.

WORKAROUND

I found a workaround for the problem by comparing Thunderbird portable 2.0.0.18 to 2.0.0.18(r2) using the programm Winmerge (portable).

To get the extensions to work in non-english languages, I edited the file "...\ThunderbirdPortable\App\Thunderbird\defaults\pref\all-l10n.js" (of course making a backup first Wink

Where it says
pref("general.useragent.locale", "en-US");

I replaced "en-US" with "de" for german. Now the extensions are back in german again.

Interesting

Thanks.

I tried your suggestion, and it works part way.

Lightning appears as "Calendar" (English) rather than "Agenda" (French) and the menus are about half in French and half in English. But system dates appear in French which means that a printout should be totally in French. I admit I forgot to check other extensions.

So there may be another language flag somewhere else.

Another

There is another one somewhere in a mozilla config file inside thunderbird itself but I can't recall where. Have you tried deleting the whole App\thunderbird directory and then reinstalling?

Yes but... and a workaround

Yes, it's basically the same problem as in 2.0.0.18, but the page doesn't give a solution that applies to 2.0.0.23.

Hovever, there is a 3-step workaround, which is to act as if the language is not listed. More specifically, I followed instructions for method 2 as stated here:
https://portableapps.com/apps/internet/thunderbird_portable/localization
So here is what I did:
– Installed the English-language version
– Started Thunderbird
– Installed the Language-Switcher extension
– Quit and Restarted Thunderbird
– Installed the French Language Pack
– Quit and Restarted Thunderbird

And now, it works with French everywhere.

Switcher

Did you install the switcher? Language packs alone have no effect on Thunderbird.

The BEST and recommended option is to delete the ThunderbirdPortable\App\thunderbird directory and then install the German version over your install. Apps like Firefox and Thunderbird are really not designed to switch languages.

sure, I installed the switcher... anyway, your suggested solution worked (deleting thunderbird directory and reinstalling the German version). Thanks for that!

Same problem here

Hello there,

first I wish to thank you guys at portableapps.com for the great work! This really changed my life (at least regarding the use of the internet, especially e-mails).

I got the same problem with the lightning extension. Even a fresh install without any user data doesn't solve the problem. TB version ist 2.0.0.23 (german) and lightning is 0.9.

Doesn't help to delete the app folder and reinstall.

Looked for a language pack to try the "switcher-solution" but I didn't find it...

Just wanted to report this "bug".

Regards
