Java portableizer

I was just wondering, would there be any way to implement "pause" for downloading of Java platform?

Thanks

No

Sorry, but we can't do that with the NSIS downloader plugin.

It's not that we don't want to, it's that we can't implement that... The plugin doesn't have that feature...

Install Elsewhere

Live installers aren't really meant to be installed over dialup. Hardly any have a pause feature. You're best off installing it somewhere with a fast connection (work, school, library, etc).

sorry but

Sorry, but this response doesn't measure up.

ALL mozilla updates implement this feature, so why not what's available here at portableapps.com

Ridiculous

in a way, the NSIS download

in a way, the NSIS download plugin is kind of simple minded, like ie's download manager

and writing a new plugin might be some work

and dsl connections in most areas are almost as cheap as dial-up

Not

Please stop being rude, listless. There's no occasion for it. As with many of these things, if you want something, you are free to try and develop it yourself - you'll find in this case it's very difficult, possibly part of the reason that we haven't invested any time in it (most of the reason though is just that it's not necessary for most people).

Beyond that, you're wrong in the application of the feature as well; Mozilla updates may be able to pause (I've never noticed any pause feature, but maybe it just comes in the form of a fail-safe if the download stops) - but they don't have any online installers such as ours are, let alone any which support pausing.

again another patronising

again another patronising response from a *moderator*

Sorry, but you should be showing respect for users of your products not telling them to read a book.

Chris is not a moderator, but I am.
I do need to ask you to tone down your replies, of late they have been kind of hostile and folks are complaining, publicly and privately.

I have read my above paragraph several times, I do not think it is patronizing, if you think it is I apologize, but it is a formal request for you to tone things down and try to be polite, when folks may not agree with you or want to do things the way you might think they should, even if your ideas are good.

It is important to be civil,
Please honor this request.

Nope

The NSIS download plugins don't support true pause and resume ala Mozilla's updater. None of them do (there are 3). This is because live installers in general don't do it as there's not much call for it. The NSIS download plugin we use does support resume but only during the current session if the connection is dropped -- which isn't terribly useful -- but it wouldn't work anyway as you may get a different mirror for the download.

An app's built in updater is not an installer and is an entirely different animal.

Also, please ease up on the attitude. Just because you don't like an answer doesn't make it 'ridiculous'.

Well how do PAP people expect

Well how do PAP people expect to provide incremental updates to the platform I wonder, but I'll try to be nicer in future I didn't think people here took things personally and they are all hardened software developers.

Anyway, it makes sense I think to provide this even for Open office.

Hoping someone cares enough to try.

I'm not sure you quite

I'm not sure you quite understand. The only time this is an issue (apparently) is when you are using a live installer. Live installers have never really been designed to be paused, hence why they are live installers. A normal installer, to update apps and/or the platform here can be paused/restarted depending on the download client you use, whether it be a dedicated download app such as Free Download Manager or just FireFox, IE, or Opera. You have to take into consideration the manner in which the installer is designed to run. A good portion of users now, are no longer on dialup, and I'm not saying ALL are off dialup, but it has turned to the minority now, instead of the majority. On top of that, the installer says it's a live installer before it is run, in fact - right in the name of the installer.

Also - "they are all hardened software developers" is a very untrue statement. A good portion of the developers and users on here are, in fact, very far from that statement. Most of the developers and users are actually still in Primary school, or middle-high school as us in the USA would call it.

No incremental updates

We don't have incremental updates at all; a system for doing them is something which just isn't really practical. If you want to update, you've got to download the whole thing.

Ok, the question then must

Ok, the question then must be, are there any plans to provide incremental updates to the technology in general?

I believe this would be the best possible thing to happen to PortableApps.com, as well of course for all those young devs to graduate and become successful without needing a *real* job.

Unfortunately I think that would be near impossible to implement... it would make us have to go through each file to check if it was updated...
Also the devs here don't get paid.... And I don't think John even gets paid... all the donations go toward the site's hosting and such.
Thanks,
Bensawsome

Download a new one

You just download a new one exactly as you do now. The platform is a 1MB download.

And just because someone is a 'hardened software developer' does not give you the right to be abrasive, demanding or condescending to them. Especially when they are voluntarily working on something for you for free. Abusive users is one of the big reasons that people quit developing free software or start ignoring all user input and shut down support forums.

It already happens now, you

It already happens now, you download an executable and it leaves the profile folders intact, hence one reason I dumped opera-usb.

The difference being this is

The difference

being this is good, software free or not what more can I say the platform is vastly more robust as of late mainly due to the above poster.

No longer does it lag when drives fall to sleep or for any reason. The only problem I have now is it won't stay open long enough to open more than one application but I'm sure the collective brain here can sort it out.

Maybe I come across as belligerent but it's not really my intent, more it is to inspire creativity as I'm sure there are many rich folk who'd give for the social good so long as overall diversity is expanded not to mention breaking new frontiers.

Think about it from a different perspective, I use this stuff almost all of the time it's in the system tray yet it has zero interaction with the network and not much more in relation to the applications it should really support for example having the ability to install and uninstall add-in's would be a great boon in my view so take that as feedback and whatever compliment you can salvage because nothing ever comes for free in this world.
