Can't rename my portable drive

Hi all,

Have being using portable Firefox for some time now, and recently made the jump to the full Portable Apps - very nice!

Everything works just fine except there is one problem. Where I work we plug-in different jump drives to the same computer, and thus each user renames the portable drive (right-clicking the drive and selecting "rename").

Upon installing Portable Apps, I noticed the computer recognizes my jump drive as "Portable Apps" and it will not allow me to change its name. This was tried on a computer with full administrator access, so access is not the problem. Everytime I try to change the name, it simply stays "Portable Apps".

Is this a bug? If it is not, is there a way to override this? Thanks.

No bug, ini

Its not a bug.
In the root folder of your drive, there is a hidden file called Autorun.inf.
To see and edit it, you have to enable "show hidden files".
If you edit it in Notepad you'll find a line called:
Label=PortableApps
thats the name your drive has and you can change it to whatever you want.

Thanks very much! May I suggest adding a "rename feature" in the Portable Apps options menu?

Hmmm...

I am not a programmer, nor do I have any knowledge of programming, but that sounds like a good idea.

Don't have to see hidden files

You don't even have to see the hidden file.

First, determine the drive letter of your flash drive. Mine's J, but it's N at home. (Ironically those are my initials.) Second, open Notepad (or whatever text editor.) File --> Open, then type J:\autorun.inf, no matter what folder it's looking at (e.g. My Documents). It'll open the file right up. And sub the letter of your drive for J in the example above.

Also if you have an icon you prefer (it should have 16x16 and 32x32 variants, at least), you can put it in the root as well and specify its name in autorun.inf in the appropriate area.

I have also tried to rename my drive and can not

I have also tried to rename my drive using both the built in rename feature and modifying the autorun.in file. No matter what I do windows explorer still shows the name of the drive as PortableApss.com and will not change it. However the menu for portable apps does show the new name. How do I change what Windows sees it as?

Thanks,
Terry

At the bottom-left of the

At the bottom-left of the PortableApps Menu, there should be the name of the drive (ie: PortableApps.com (H:)) Click on it, you'll be able to rename it from there. It will apply the modification in the Autorun.inf file for you.
