TB reloading extra copies of messages left on server

I'm using a copy of TB Portable to make a backup of a large number (12k+) of messages currently residing on my email server. I'm leaving messages on the server for now as a backup, and my "local" copy of TB works fine with it. However, TB portable keeps re-copying messages it's already read from the server (usually about 4k of them at a time!), and it looks like a nasty bug.

I'm running Windows XP Media Center Edition (SP-2) on an Athlon 64 X2 (dual core).

I 'installed' the portable version on a USB drive first; when I noted the problem, I tried installing the regular version on the same machine. The regular version works fine, but the portable copy just seems broken. Anybody else see anything like this?

YES!

I never erase emails from my gmail (I have like 300 of them) and they all kept everytime I use thunderbird. It went up to live 2000 after the tenth or so time i used it. And the funny thing is that it kept saying that none of them were read! I suggest simply using Gmail Notifier (from firefox addons). I use that for my email... it always logs me on and I can have multiple accounts.

not in general

I have heard abt this sometimes, but could not replicate this on any of my accounts, tried on 5 different pop accounts.

People who complained abt it had mostly gmail , some had other accounts but then it was some kind of wrong use of the TB or wrong settings on the mail account on the server.

I assume therefore that there is some connection with setting of a gmail account which I do not have.

In some cases I found that people did some operations on the mailbox via web interface and so some of the message IDs were reset and therefore read later as new message.

hmmm...

The account I'm using is a POP account on Comcast (if that's any help) and *not* gmail.

I'd been using the non-portable regular edition of TB with no problem and EXACTLY the same POP settings (I checked every thing I could set and configure several times). I even tried upgrading the non-portable edition to the latest edition, but the problem still happens _only_ in the portable edition. Consistently.

I do use the web interface Comcast provides, so I thought your not about message ID resets might be an issue; however, the problem still occurs at times I have not used the web interface. It seems to consistently want to reloaded about 4000+ messages, though not specifically the most _recent_ messages, as I have 4+ copies of some messages and 1 copy of another, both old and untouched.

I'm using the non-portable edition for now (in three different locations!), but I hope this might help anybody else if they're having this problem...(though of course I wouldn't mind finding a way to fix this!).

popstate.dat

is the file the mechanism is using to keep track of what has been received and what not.
If this file goes broken, the TB needs to rebiuld it.
There can be so many prblems in receiving mails. Sometimes short interuption of communication will make all markings on server and in the client out of synch.

Those problems come up with any mailclients apparently, thought I have never experienced them and when then I could clearly see why it happend.

Sometimes with portable mail, when there is the same client also on the local installation, and sometimes some update was run, it can then ponit to the local folder for profile. Then each time you stick the flsh to other workstation it will again read all the mails again which are still not listed in the popstat.dat
Since the behavoiuor is not consistent, it seems to me that your poratble TB reads local profiles and this would indicate that at some time you might have updated it with the build in updater or otherwise disrupted portability.
Reinstall of TB might be solution, but probably some look into registry for keys pointing portable TB to some local positions should be cleared first.

the problem will be on pc

rather then the original installation.

There are setting in the registry on one or more of your workstations leading to this.

Search registry for entries connected somehow to your portable TB when the stick is not there.

Try to delete them all.

It may then start to work. As I said, it is just matter of the one single file being read from other place then it should be.

You could probably also do backup pf your mails (profiles on each PC and the stick), then uninstall all instances of TB, clean all rests of keys from registry on all PC and then install back and place profile in PC and in stick back. This could solve the problem then.
Do not try to make your portable default mail client or update by the contained updater since this will lead again to similar problems.

umm...

I meant that I installed TB portable and even after I deleted all the messages, they just kept coming back. (and I really don't need the advice because I don't use TB anymore, but thanks anyway).

yes

because there was some pointing referencing portable version to a local profile on some of your computers in the registry.
