GNUCash serious problem file parsing error

A serious file parsing problem in GNUCash results in loss of all my account information.

I installed GNUCashPortable and created an account set. I then saved the file. I was able to open that file a few more times but then, when I started up GNUCash, I got the error "problem parsing [filename]" and GNUCash would start without the file. I tried opening the .xac files in the same directory but was unsuccessful. All the information is gone!

I then uninstalled GNUCASH and installed it again. I created a new account set and filled in some information. I then closed the program and started it again with the same result -- a file parsing error.

Is this a known problem and can I do something about it?

Can't Reproduce

I can't reproduce it, and I use GnuCash every day. Generally, this type of thing indicates corruption on a drive, which can be caused by the drive failing, the USB ports shorting, or unsafe removal of the device. Try running it from a local hard drive for a few days and see if it happens. Be sure you're using a fresh install.

Also, be sure to backup regularly using the platform's built-in backup utility.

Will keep trying

John, thank you for the quick reply. Thank you also for making these portable apps available!

I was running GNUCashPortable from my hard drive when this happened and it just happened to me again, but I will keep trying because I like the program.

I was wondering if this could have anything to do with the fact that I use multiple currencies and have portable Perl installed, which is a development version?

Hmm

I only use US Dollar myself. I don't think GnuCash uses Perl at all, does it?

Try checking your local hard drive for errors just to be thorough.

I known shawn faucer created

I known shawn faucer created a portable edition of perl for use with GnuCash. But I'm not sure how much GnuCash requires it. I don't use GNUCash. Hopefully, you will find this comment helpful Sad
