A suite - PA.c rocket dock creative commons

Hi all,

I tried the Lupo Suite, and it's interesting, has many of the features I was wanting from this menu and for a second I thought it was time to pack up my tent but I thought again.

What's good about that menu is you can drag-and-drop any icon on it and in classic mode it allows a fully clean slate so to speak, but what I did was (in addition to using rocket dock) put PA.com on there so it's easier to get to eg no Windows Start menu, and it works great.

Now that I have things this way eg rocket dock > lupo > pap what I need PAP to do now is to give me the option to permanently hide things like uninstallers for commercial portable applications, ie those that come in .zip files.

I hope what I'm posting isn't in violation of any treaties or other bans or that I will be sanctioned for writing this here, but these things are remarkable and can all work together IMV.

If you are asking can you hide something

If you are asking can you hide something like uninstall.exe in the PAP/PAM?

See here:
https://portableapps.com/support/portable_apps_suite#hidingicons

If you are using the 2.0 beta see here:
https://portableapps.com/node/20013 [Better App Hiding]

Hi Tim

Thanks for replying.

It's great to be able to hide applications via right-click, but what I'm asking for is to be able to hide certain program elements from the menu itself, something I believe the application (menu) does not currently offer and my thought is that it should be done via ini file as oppposed to xml.

Thank you

I am not sure what you mean

I am not sure what you mean, could you give an example of a "program elements".

Only files with an .exe should be appearing in the menu [and if i recall OO.o is a little different]

Tim

Edit: or should I be reading
certain program elements from the menu itself
as
certain program elements OF the menu itself ?

as, in the link below, you want to hide things on the right hand side,
https://portableapps.com/files/forumimages/platform2/default.png

and things which appear/happen when you click on the right hand side ?
https://portableapps.com/files/forumimages/platform2/appmenu.png

Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?

I'll give an example. There

I'll give an example.

There is a program called HWInfo that has a .zip extractable version as well as installer, however when you put it in the PortableApps folder (which I still have present) it "exposes" elements of the program such as other installers etc, and as much as I enjoy the hide feature, when I unhide I see it again and I don't want this at all.

Hope I am being clear since I believe this is the next step for the menu as a whole in order to stay ahead of the game.

No Reason

There's really no reason to show hidden icons in the 2.0 release except when you accidentally hide stuff (which should be a rare occurence). Hide is for permanently hiding, not getting less-used apps out of the way. A better option is to pin the apps you use often to the top of the menu and then have your less-used ones below it.

Also, you can delete the uninstallers from any apps you want, they don't need them to run. It's not necessary. The menu even filters out many of them automatically.

It may sound pedantic, but I don't like strikethrough for things I don't want (or need) to know about.

Call me Punk Generation Y, I don't care, I just don't want it in my menu that's all and I know can you change the situation for anyone who uses this software.

Of course the Favorite feature is good but is it not all alphabetical?

Hidden

They should be hidden once you hide them. As in not appearing on the menu at all.

They'll only appear again when you right-click and select Show Hidden Items. In that mode, the ones you have hidden are indicated with a strikethrough. Once you turn that off they are hidden again. Like I said, the Show Hidden Items feature is meant ONLY for when you accidentally hide something you want back.

The pin to top does what it says and pins your favorites to the top. You can see it here where Firefox and Thunderbird are set as favorites:
https://portableapps.com/files/forumimages/platform2/default.png

This feature is in 2.0 Beta 3 which you can download here:

but what is the icon in the default ping labeled "Learn About PortableApps.com?" Is this a bookmark or is it a user manual like the one for GIMP?

ASuite

ASuite is independent of Lupo. The Lupo developer isn't associated with ASuite at all. He just packages ASuite with some of our apps (some without crediting us, some in violation of the trademark license) and some from other places.

ASuite is handy for manual stuff. Unfortunately, there's nothing automated about it at all. You have to manually install shortcuts, etc after you install an app.

We have no intention of switching to ASuite for PA.c or incorporating its code. Most of the things people ask for like categories are coming.

You can already hide files in the current release by right-clicking and renaming it to a dash. Even better, in the current 2.0 beta release you can right-click and select hide.

Hey John. I've been looking

About these categories, would it ever be possible for PA.c to scan sub-directories as well and display what is in them in the list in terms of executable files?

There's a developer named Mark Russinovich who makes stuff for Microsoft and I want to use his applications with your menu.

Thanks

just drop the folder in .

just drop the folder in . I'm assuming you're talking about sysinternals stuff?

Just do the following:

/PortableApps(THE Folder :D)
/////AppName (A folder)
/////////Appname.exe (the program).

Then do what OliverK

Then do what OliverK mentioned multiple times. If you are looking to do this with sysinternals then why do you have subdirectories? If you just unzip the sysinternals suite all the apps will be in one directory.

Messy

It would get messy real fast for apps that have multiple nested EXEs. It's far easier to just keep your EXEs one deep.

Now that is just silly to think that categories would help with subdirectories after being told that subdirectories would be messy. The code for finding the applications most likely won't change when they get around to implementing categories. Categories will just affect how they are viewed in the platform.

no u are silly for not understanding.

Now I have 1000+ applications on my stick, and I'm asking for a better way to manage them "behind the scenes".

John said use "favorites" and that a categories feature is upcoming so I'll wait to see how that helps first before sticking my *nose* in again.

I do understand what you are

I do understand what you are trying to do. Where my understanding might be lacking is in how categories are going to work. With John stating things would get messy using subdirectories leads me to believe the directory structure probably won't change and you'll have to keep things as OliverK has laid out. So my point was that it is not going to help you with managing "behind the scenes" if it works the way I think it might.

P.S. I'm done with the silly talk by the way.

I have an idea for this that might help ristof with his 1000+ apps. What if a section was added to the ini for additional directories to check. One could add subdirectories this way and not affect other apps with nested EXEs.

[AdditionalDirectories]
SomeRootFolder1\AppDirectory1\
SomeRootFolder1\AppDirectory2\
SomeRootFolder2\Subdirectory1\AppDirectory3\

@John: GPL Violation

[name removed by mod JTH - as this site has stolen our code and stripped off our license, we don't discuss them here]

Just wondering, if that happens, then wouldn't it be a good idea to maybe do something between asking them to give credit, or sue them? I remember a long while ago lamer had a program of his(PNotes, no doubt)used in a $20 program, without any credit, etc. Just renamed the program. Somebody suggested to go to GPL Violations. (For those of you that weren't there, the guy that packaged it pulled it off, said he was a big fan, and even suggested a feature :D.)

Or did you already try that?

International

The problem is it's international, so it would be very expensive to do. And it's a guy working alone that's doing it, so there probably wouldn't be much to recover money-wise.

Is the Lupo Suite even legal???

I mean, I thought that PA was the best as it gets in terms of portable applications and legallity and such. But John, you've got some competition! I know that there are a bunch of apps that I'd like (like MS Office Enterprise) but I don't like being illegal. And the website is only a few years old. We've got some catching up to do.

I've also noticed that they call (some) of their apps a PLUS: "This is a 'PLUS' (Portable, Lite, Useful and Simple) package improved by Lupo PenSuite Team." Can they do that? And I'm specifically referring to the fact that it says that for Firefox Portable. I think I -might- >_

Nope

The Mozilla apps with add-ons are all illegal and in violation of the trademark license/guidelines. I don't think they have permission on the OpenOffice.org rename either. Most of the time they call it plus to try and make it seem like they built it even though it's just our app with an extension added or something similar. It's just someone repackaging stuff from elsewhere.

I knew it!

Do they know that their apps are illegal because they seem to try and be as legal as possible and might not know it. (they might not get the trademark issues right [like jamcomm])

Also found this: http://www[dot]lupopensuite.com/db/oth/license.htm

EDIT: I also found this when I created an account. Does PA do this too?

to continue my trackdown of Lupo

Here's what I said:

I was wondering, do you have permission to be distributing this software? I am 99.9% sure that your copy of Firefox is illegal (it violates trademarks) and I'm 100% sure that opera from [illegal URL removed by mod JTH] is also illegal because all their software is illegal. I realize that you seem to try and be as legal as possible but I've searched your website and have found nothing that makes me think that both Firefox and Opera is legal. I suggest Opera@USB for a web browser..

Here's what they said:

About Firefox, we are waiting for a new authorization for the software distribution (we have sent an email to ask for the new release). About [illegal URL removed by mod JTH], we know that they actually distribute some illegal software, so we are verifying if all their software is not legally usable (they started with legal distributions and we began to use a few of their apps). Anyway in this case we have already obtained the authorization from both Opera team and the author of Opera@USB (we will probably migrate to it in the next release).
Thanks for the report and sorry for these issues..

In case you're wondering, "we are waiting for a new authorization" means they don't have permission and are doing it illegally right now. They're also unlikely to get permission.

And on the stuff from the illegal site, Lupo knows full-well that everything on that site is illegal. The site *started* with all illegal stuff like cracked versions of Photoshop and the like. And a good chunk of the 'open source' releases includes GPLed code stolen from us which they have modified and refused to release the source of. So Lupo is complicit in illegally using our stolen code in his suite. Not surprising, but good to know.
