I have GIMP 2.2.13 and GTK 2.8.18 installed as non portable on a Win2K system.
Then I know the non portable Gaim is incompatible with GTK 2.8.x, as reported here:
http://gaim.sourceforge.net/win32/
GTK+ 2.8.x Unable to connect
So I downloaded the Portable Gaim 2.0.0beta3.1, that have GTK 2.6 statically linked.
I expanded the exe files, copied the directory in \Programs
When I tryied to start PortableGaim, it seems to work correctly, but just immediately after I recreate my MSN account, PortableGaim start to give me the same error that give me the normal Gaim:
" disconnected: Connection error... Write error"
related to GTK 2.8.x
After some try I understood that the problem happen when exist (or when is created) the file:
P:\Programs\GaimPortable\Data\settings\.gaim\accounts.xml
If I remove that file, PortableGaim ask me again to create the account.
But when I recreate the account, PortableGaim recreate that file, and the error come again.
Obviusly the error happen also if I copy my 'accounts.xml' (or all the .gaim directory) from my normal Gaim to PortableGaim.
How to have Gaim, and the last minor version GTK 2.8 on the same Win32 system ?
Give AOL and Yahoo a try on the same system. This may be another MSN issue. There have been multiple issues with MSN lately due to the change of the network. That's the whole reason for the b3.1 release. So, this error you have may be related.
Gaim Portable should not be using your local GTK, even if it's in your PATH. Gaim Portable 2 B3.1 uses its own internal PATH (with no local links), GAIMHOME, GTK_BASEPATH and GAIMLANG variables which are independent of the local machine.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I have only MSN as chat account.
Seems strange to me that the error is exactly the same as normal Gaim related to GTK 2.8, to be related to MSN, or no?
I just tried to create a Yahoo account.
Then I configure PortableGaim to that account, and .... the error doesn't happen!
Then I recreated the MSN account, and the error return!
Them I deleted the MSN account, and the error gone...
It is really related to MSN, whats strange.
Now I do the same try with normal Gaim.
so, someone know a solution to use Gaim with MSN accounts?
normal Gaim work as PortableGaim on this error with MSN.
Now, how have Gaim working with MSN?
