[Feature Request] - Use Windows Jumplist instead of PA program list

Is it possible that the code can be integrated in this way, or must we have the same boring menu here forever and a day.

Why must you be rude?

There's nothing wrong with ASKING for enhancements, but far too often you have something rude or thoughtless to say about Portable Apps.

If you don't like the work done here, you aren't required to stay.

Here's a practical suggestion:
Learn to code, and create it yourself!
You may find that actually doing something, rather than complaining, is more difficult than you imagine - and if you succeed, far more rewarding.

I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.

What's the problem?

I don't see the problem here - he was making a simple feature request, and gets slammed by you as a result?

While you're certainly right that someone's being rude here, it isn't the OP; I suggest you try looking a little closer to home and attempt to be more constructive.

Too Long / Win 7 only

The Windows jump list would get too long for some folks. And it only works on Windows 7 (which is less than 1%).

You can customize the look of the current beta here:
https://portableapps.com/node/20013

2.1 will add advanced themes so you can actually alter the layout (you could even make it jumplist-esque if you desired).

Hi John,

I thought that but however it would be nice and while I respect what solanus has to say I do believe were you to survey this question some time in the future there would be the demand, as simply it would be so cool.

I guess it's kind of like how FF doesn't use the preview as does IE, but yeh again I understand the limits of these things and it can't go all Microsofts' way which is why I am hoping this concept catches on because I really would like to be able to go to any machine (or drive) and simply install a Host OS and start working.

Thanks again

Patience

I would expect Firefox to follow suit sometime with it - just remember that it is Microsoft's operating system, and so of course they had access to the way they were doing it much earlier than anyone else does.

Sugestion

Can the menu be coded so it will use the new superbar in windows 7 and the system tray in older versions? The menu should remain the same, only the icon should be moved. And in the jumplist should be something like 5 most frequent used apps and links to the portable folders (music, videos etc.)

Retard

Sorry to say it but it's true: you are a retard. By the way... What are you? A Mac fanboy or something? If I like Windows it's my own business. If you don't like it, that's fine, it is your right to choose but don't force your opinion onto other people. Remember, all the apps posted here are made for Windows and I think that this should make you rethink the situation.

heh, got you

the programs may be written to work on windows, but they are not windows

I am happy to enjoy this project for a number of reasons. I like the mozilla suite, the stuff is all open source (and gpl?), and it is not windows, even though it works on windows. I suppose it would be kinda silly to make a version for linux, since nearly all public computers this app suite is designed for are windows computers. I don't know of any public access computers that use anything but windows.

Anyway, I don't understand your windows fetish. It has taken me a while to accept windows for what it is: a platform for direct x games. Without this feature, gamers would go elsewhere, since they respect a more elegant design (linux), as well as the open source and free (gpl) nature of it. However, windows has given us the cutting edge game design we have come to expect. I suppose designers would have done something without direct-x, but it wouldn't have been as good, as that is what we have. The best win. Hence, windows wins with direct-x. The rest of it is just stuff they pirated from open source. Office is pretty good, though.

Hey, just get into the NON-windows open-source movement and embrace the app-lister as it is. It is your inspiration to get into coding. Mine is jkdefrag. Something about the colors, and the way the little white line moves around, changing the colors... wow!

Wait... what?

jamvaruAnyway, I don't understand your windows fetish. It has taken me a while to accept windows for what it is: a platform for direct x games.

Wait... what? Windows is actually pretty bad for games because of Windows itself hogging so many resources. If Windows-based PCs were good for games, first of all Linux wouldn't be excluded; second of all, the game would reboot the computer and boot into itself, like games did on the Commodore-Amiga 1000, so the game could get 100% of the system's resources. It did this by booting a VERY lite, barebones version of the AmigaDOS, which did nothing other than call the game or program. (In the case of Deluxe Paint, an art program, you actually had to type 'dpaint' and hit enter.) That's what personal computers need to do to run games right. Even MacOS is too sloppy to run games, and now that they're x86 (right guys?) all PC games should start booting their own Unix-like OS (because it's light as hell) and calling the game that way. And make you use a flash drive for game saves.

As for liking Windows, at least it "just works". Besides games, let me give you a few examples of things that don't "just work" in Linux. Mp3s. You have to go get a codec. Ogg Vorbis is fine, as it's an open format, but you have to jump through hoops to hear music. Digital video. Same thing, the rare open formats are supported, but to get video and DVD, you need to get codecs. Of course, VLC solves this problem now, but for music, I prefer XMMS because I prefer Winamp on Windows, and XMMS is a decent ripoff of Winamp. Moving on. Digital cameras. You plug one into Windows, and a wizard helps you get the photos off the camera, serialize them, and put them in folders by month (at least that's how I do it). With Linux, it's real tricky. (With Win7 it's just stupid, but I stick with XP.) Scanners. Same thing. Jump through hoops.

See, I want to use Linux. I'm actually waiting for the next Ubuntu... Kubuntu actually, for the latest KDE... 4.2 or 4.22 I think. I'm gonna try it, and if it's not able to do for us all we need, I'm coming back to XP. I've been wanting to use Linux for years. From Red Hat (6 or 7), to Linspire (gag), to Fedora Core 2, 3, then 4, to Ubuntu, from 4.x or 5.x on. I've tried every couple versions but always go back to Windows. One day I will switch for good. Hopefully it's next time.

Windows is fundamentally good, but since XP, the message has gotten lost. 2000 was nearly perfect. XP got off to a rocky start, but is pretty solid today. Vista is a joke, even Microsoft admits it, almost more readily than they clowned on Windows ME. (Remember the charts that showed Windows XP being 2-4 times faster than Windows ME, yet to the left was Windows 98 towering over Windows ME, but not quite measuring up to XP?) Windows 7 is shaping up to be a bigger joke, only because they're saying it makes up for Vista. Windows is pretty, it always looked good, but now they're putting form over function. You have to have a beast of a gaming rig to run Windows Vista or Windows 7. You'd think a 2GHz AMD64 3200+ with 2GB of RAM and a 256MB GeForce 6600 would be enough to run either of them, but you'd be wrong. Hopefully it is enough to run the latest Kubuntu.

Direct X 11 anyone?

You can't play new games without Direct X. Other than that, linux rules.

If you read the help files and check the online how-to's you will figure it out pretty quick.

All I used my windows install for was ripping cd's and dvd's, with EAC and ripit4me.

OH, and for playing games.

Can you play WoW on linux?

However, if you wan't to be a real computer user, not just a wannabe windows junkie, you should learn linux. It is eminently more flexible and supported than windows is. The concept of GPL by itself should make you a permanent convert.

Have you surfed Sourceforge.net lately?

You don't need "Kubuntu" if you have a regular Ubuntu installation. You just add the KDE (kiddie) desktop to your install. Might as well add Xface and the rest as well, so you can switch at your leisure. Whatever floats your boat, the beauty of linux/GPL operating system.

And you can be a contributor right from the start, as you are here.

I believe I am preaching to the choir. Don't you have multiple installs/os's on different partitions?

Thanks for your comments.

DX9

Side note, but you don't need anything greater than DX9 to play games. DX10/11 is only on Vista and Windows 7 only (only about 20% of PCs) and many gamers haven't upgraded because games run on average about 5-10% slower on Vista than under XP.

Linux comments

GNOME vs. KDE
Well, the KDE desktop environment is more geared towards Windows users, and GNOME is more for Mac OS converts. Both are nice, but I prefer the look of KDE to GNOME.

Windows junkie vs. Linux guru
Thing is, I'm married, and my wife doesn't want to learn a new system. I'm working on that, though. I already switched her from IE to Firefox and AIM, Yahoo!, and MSN (yes she used all three) to Pidgin. She doesn't mind Linux so long as Firefox or Pidgin is all she wants to do (which is most of the time) but if she wants to play some music, well, Linux has never been multimedia friendly, though it has gotten better over the years. If she can't just double-click her "Anything & Everything" playlist and hear tunes -- or better yet, if she can't find the hard drives the videos are stored on, I gotta hear about it. So it's easier to just use Windows XP.

However, when the new Ubuntu comes out in a couple weeks, I do plan on partitioning C: and running it, not as the default OS, but something I can boot into on a reboot. Or we might do that thing where it runs as a Windows application first. And I used to have 2-3 operating systems, but that was a long time ago. I've since gone back to XP, downgraded to Vista, upgraded to Win7 Beta something, upgraded to Win7 RC, upgraded to XP, and that's where I've stayed for the last few months.

Reality vs. what should be
But yeah, I'm a big fan of GPL and other open licenses, and I love what Linux distributors, Mozilla, and others are doing. Conversely, I strongly dislike everything Microsoft's done for PCs (so as to wholly except the brilliant Xbox 360) since 2006-2007. Before Vista, you could argue Linux and Mac OS had their strong points, but Windows was pretty good, too, for what it is. Now, I don't know what they were doing. They need a guy like how Bill Gates was in the early '80s at the helm, not these businessmen hell-bent on squashing competition with inferior products.

I've been saying for years that Microsoft need to release a version of Windows that does little more than the basic Windows tasks. Forget about XP, forget about Vista, forget about 7, and take Windows 2000, update it, and release it without Windows Media Player, without IE, without Wordpad, and without all the "extra" stuff. Only Paint and Notepad can stay. Not something to distribute in new computers, but something you can order for a reduced price ($50 would be fair) and then you extend yourself with your own software. Windows Update would not deliver anything but security updates, and it wouldn't use your browser, it would just do it automatically.

What do you mean? The kernel

What do you mean?

The kernel in vista is way safer than anything XP or before, plus you can set the theme to classic.

I can't wait for Windows 7 so I can have that little desktop.scf button in the system tray, that one feature alone will save me heaps of time. I only hope that alt tab + click can select the program without going back to the taskbar, never mind the silly jumplists.

Covered this already

ristofThe kernel in vista is way safer than anything XP or before, plus you can set the theme to classic.

Problem is, Vista and Win7 require a beast of a gaming rig to work as well as XP and 2k do on normal computers. In this economy, putting out something that only works smoothly on a machine that can play Crysis or whatever at 100FPS; everything else lags for basic desktop work, does not make sense unless there's an offering for the other 95% of us.

It's like saying Mac OS X is better than Windows. Sure, those arguments are valid, but you gotta buy a whole new computer to use it. My current computer and current OS cost nothing to continue using. A new [and good] OS would be worth paying for if it worked with my current hardware, but an awesome new OS isn't worth paying for if I gotta buy a new computer. That's a deal breaker, and "set the theme to classic", oddly enough, doesn't make it run any better.

So what I mean is you might as well have said "Get a Mac".

Wow

The AMD64 X2 6000+ smokes my chip, and the ATI Raedon HD3400 looks like it's at least as good as mine, but probably better because mine's only DX9. Not sure how a dual-core is slow as hell, but I suppose Vista has something to do with that. My AMD64 3200+ single-core flies in XP. Wouldn't you rather be flying along with something that relatively current and "just works", or... how much performance are you willing to give up for the pretty shiny graphics? Your call of course, but my call is I don't want to have to wait the time it takes to make a cup of coffee just to open my file manager.

In short, you've made my point. A computer should be able to run just the operating system and the file manager without lag.

I'd rather the extra security

I'd rather the extra security that Vista provides rather than a bit of extra spring in my step.

AMD is very reliable as you'd know, when a system is duly honed.

The single greatest app here for me is Clamwin, since as of now the portable menu knows when it's definitions are out of date, hence a fully operational network app.

Thanks to the PA Community, may you always be there to set the standards for the rest to follow.

Extra secureity = hand-holding

To each his own, but the perceived extra security in Vista is pretty much just hand-holding, if you mean UAC. Nobody likes it because it nags you to death, gets newbies in the habit of just blindly mashing "OK". Win7's UAC is a little smoother, but XP, Vista, and Win7 can all be made more secure by just using a limited account for day-to-day use and an admin account for installing stuff. But nobody wants to do that, and accounts are admin by default.

No "honing" (I guess you mean overclocking, BIOS tweaks? I know none of that) but AMD is as reliable as I've any right to expect.

Anyway, Clamwin now has update notification? When'd that happen? I actually just took it off my flash drive; it was a bit redundant and a chore to update. Does it update automatically, or just give you the heads-up?

As I understand it UAC stops

As I understand it UAC stops the user doing things without thinking, this is fine but if it stops me from say using batch file then I will be very annoyed.

Vista is more secure simply because it runs code for users in the user area, ie no privilege elevation like XP.

Personally I can't work with XP anymore otherwise the rate of installation and re-installation would be too high.

By honing I mean Vista's self-heal mode.

Heads up!

right on

I had a nice copy of wXP, black pirated edition that was flawless. I got a guilt complex and reinstalled with Ubuntu only (heck, you gotta jump in the deep end, i reckon). One thing that bugged me with a multiple install is I couldn't figure out how to modify the default Ub boot program, grub. With debian I had no problem. Kinda blows, but if you keep trying and installing different things, and learning how to customize, eventually you get it. So, you got a project in your wife. How fun:)

Xbox... isn't it just a money pit? Aren't PC games just better? What have they got, besides Halo?

I like the other window managers, instead of gnome, and kde, for the very same reason, that they are inspired by other computer systems... how lame! Oh, let's make it nice for the newbies to switch... how droll!

Xface is just fine.

If you can customize your linux just right for your missus, then you don't really need windows, nor even a "utilitarian" version. There is no excuse for it. Of course, if you want to play Conan online with direct X 10, then you have to have vista, i think. Or did they actually never come out with Conan DX10?

I will probably buy a computer with Windows 7 next, just for that reason. I will also probably modify it, voiding my warranty, after a reasonable period, i suppose. Perhaps I can get by with a custom Dell rig or something, and USB add-ons. Blah. Maybe not.

Thanks

Windows is very good at being a DAW (as is mac) and is a cheaper alternative.

Although Linux can as well to an extent there are very little features other than audio and basic midi.

Maybe

To my knowledge, there is absolutely zero open source code for Windows 7 jumplists. And the only example code Microsoft has published that I have seen is .NET (which isn't portable).

Do you need the source?

Your menu already has half the feature requested. You got the folders plus explore, and eject and exit. Perhaps add an MRU function with the option to display the X (default 5) most recently used apps under Explore and above Eject. In fact with five folders (four plus eject), five apps would look nice. Also, that context menu could use some 16x16 icons to kind of pretty it up some, like VLC has.

Then again, it's been a while since I tested the Windows 7 RC, so I may not fully understand jump lists. Man, I forgot how pretty Windows 7 is. Maybe my next computer will be able to run it. (Link goes to the Wikipedia article on features new to Win7; good reference on jump lists.)

What the suite really needs

What the suite really needs (I think) is to have the Favorites always visible, ie not scroll with the rest of the list, as well greater abstraction of the PortableApps.com folder itself.
