[Forum suggestion] Forum select module

I've just joined another Drupal forum, and I think that they have a module that might be of benefit to people here. It's called "Forum select" and it allows each user to show or hide each forum. Not sure if it takes them out of the tracker ("Recent posts"), I'll have to get back to ya on that one. I would think so, though.

For example, I never use Thunderbird, and that would be one topic I'd hide.

Nope

It only affects the main forum page and the select list when creating a post. We use a custom view for the tracker anyway.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Right

Yes, I've just found that out. If I click on a category there, all the hidden forums show up.

That other site doesn't even have a tracker, but it's a huge forum, and the admin (?) told me that a board tracker would kill their bandwidth. I believe it.

On the topic of forum enhancements...

Could we get something for example, forum view WYSIWYG. I.e., instead of having a separate page to post, have a box pop out so that we can see the whole conversation while we post (like Google Wave)?

Firefox

Firefox is your friend here.

I don't know how Google Wave does it (got any invites? lol) but over on GameFAQs, if you use the GameFOX extension and a CSS a guy made, you can get a floating iframe post box that auto-hides in the corner. For being the barest forum out there (or one of them) it's pretty amazing what some Firefox extensions and CSS can do for it, entirely client-side. Still blows my mind when I look at their boards in IE or Chrome. (I try to do that as seldom as possible.)

Anyway, for here, I CTRL+Click to open replies, so I can check back on the whole topic. Greasemonkey has a script for MySpace that adds the formatting buttons, maybe it could be adopted for here? (Add portableapps.com to the include list, get the internal name of the post textarea, tweak the script, tweak the buttons...) I just use the BBCode extension with a few custom scripts (Strong, Emphasis, PA.c Quote, Emoticon breaker).

There are no Drupal scripts on UserScripts.org and certainly none for PortableApps.com, but all that means is someone has yet to make them. I think the Greasemonkey scripts are Java or CSS... I can't write those languages, but maybe I can adapt a script for another site, for this one. Not gonna promise anything, but I'm digging the idea. At least to get us formatting buttons. Remove the "Allowed HTML tags:" line and put actual formatting buttons after "Comment: *"? That'd be pretty sweet, eh? Not sure you're gonna get WYSIWYG out of a script, that would require the script to replace the post textarea with a new box that would provide that. I've seen a site that had a live preview window, I think -- that might be more doable. But I can promise you that I'm not even gonna attempt that. Maybe if I make the script, one of the code wizards up here will do all that.

Let's just bribe and blackmail politely ask John to install FCK Editor or TinyMCE.

Mostly because we don't have anything we can use to blackmail him.
