Wrong Version Of Firefox Starts

I use Firefox Portable version 3.5.3. If Firefox is not already launched/opened, the following occurs. I click on an embedded link in an email (any program), document, or other source as long as Firefox browser is not running. When Firefox launches, I notice it is does not have my current add-ons, bookmarks, etc. If need any of the missing items, I have to close Firefox, re-start Firefox and click on embedded web link. If Firefox is already running, then this problem never occurs. How can I resolve this issue?

That may be because Firefox

That may be because Firefox Portable isn't your default browser on the computer. It opens you default browser (if it was Internet Explorer, that would start up instead). You can't (unfortunately) change this setting, though.

Wrong Version Firefox Starts

I see your point. IE never starts, it is always a version of Firefox which does not have my current add-ons, bookmarks, and buttons for Google toolbar. Somehow a different or earlier version starts instead of the one I described. I will look into this. Thanks for the lead.

Does the computer you have firefox?

this is one of the cool things I like about Firefox: If you have FFP running, you can just minimize it and launch the shortcut from your desktop and you get a "copy" firefox that makes a new window based on which on is open. So you email opens up another FFP window instead of the one on the computer. But if you try to launch FFP while the one on the computer is running, yeah, no it doesn't work.

I do not IE even though it is on my computer. I verified that FFP, v3.5.3, is my default browser. The problem only occurs if FFP is not running or launched or open. When I click on embedded link, Firefox starts but it does not have my current add-ons, bookmarks or Google toolbar buttons. I will play around with this some more and see if I can figure how to resolve. But, I am looking for any good ideas to try.
Thanks.

This is because when you set

This is because when you set firefox as a default browser, even with FFP, it sets the firefox.exe as the default browser, not FirefoxPortable.exe.

The launcher MUST be run for firefox to use the portable profile that you have, it's one of the things that the launcher handles. If you launch firefox.exe (even from the FirefoxPortable\App\Firefox\ folder, it's still not using the portable profile because the launcher hasn't set the proper parameters, nor done the required work when Firefox launches.

Afaik - there is no fix for setting Firefox as your default browser.

You could always try setting the associations manually to FirefoxPortable.exe (the actual PortableApps launcher) and it might work.

Local or not?

When do you have this problem?

Do you have FirefoxPortable installed on your hard drive, or are you describing an issue when you use FirefoxPortable from your USB flash drive on someone else's computer?

I use Firefox Portable on my laptop hard drive predominantly. I use FFP this way so I can move whatever to USB drive as needed when away from house. But alas, I do not travel much anymore nor can I use USB drives at work. I never went away from FFP and plan to continue even if I cannot solve this issue. So, specific answers to your question is Yes, this an issue with FFP used off my local hard drive on my own computer. Thanks.

Since your problem is identical, perhaps you may be interested in reading the solution that I posted almost a year ago?

I tried the approach listed in blog but it did not work. I noticed that Blog is for Vista not XP Pro which I use on my laptop. Is there one for XP Pro? Also on the blog, there appears to be one last step but text is cutoff so I could not fully understand plus I notice the pics listed are different from my view so it must be a difference between Vista and XP Pro. Thanks.

Look further down

If you look further down in that thread I referenced, someone posted an alternative program at pc-tools.net that should work for other Windows versions.

I have resolved issue thanks to you. Even though your listed blog post did not work for me, I was able to track an utility for Win Xp off the same web site at
http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/how-to-set-firefox-portable-as-the-def.... The zip file is located at http://windowsxp.mvps.org/utils/dbrowser_1_8.zip. Anyway, thanks again for the lead. I am very glad to have this annoyance resolved.
