Cathy is awesome

Have used it for years, since a friend recommended it. (Not even sure if I ever updated it!)

I always thought it was "portable" in the sense that it was a standalone app? Did it leave registry entries or something?

Just cataloged and scanned my USB drive. Smile Looks like it works great.

Registry

Yeah, it left [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\rOva]. From Help/Tip & Hints -

"If you want to start Cathy as portable application, use the parameter
-ini cathy.reg , where cathy.reg is the export of registry entries for
Cathy saved as simple ASCII-file (not UNICODE). This file will be read
instead of registry entries, but no change will be written back to it."

I didn't look into that (because it won't save any changes), I just used the standard PA.c registry routine.

I see why

I think I finally understand the registry. It's really a humongous INI file. Sad, eh?

Insert original signature here with Greasemonkey Script.

Wicked!

Disk Cataloging, though I don't use it very often is something I've found to be pretty handy over the years. I have never in all my years of searching found something as quick and efficient as Cathy (and believe me, I've tried 'em all). It's one of the few remaining applications I have that isn't truly portable, but I'm kinda forced to stick with it since I can't find a viable alternative.

Hooray for Cathy Portable! Hope this one becomes a PA.c standard.

403KB download / 285KB installed?

what? The installer is larger? wow. Is this after it downloads the app online?

My proxy won't allow me to look at the website of the original app. it says "games is filtered". wow. It looks cool though. Will test.

The App

The interface is a bit dated, but it performs really well in terms of finding files (it's very fast). In addition, I've noted some disk catalog programs take megabytes to store information on a couple of hundred files. The disk space used by Cathy to catalog a volume seems much more reasonable (kilobytes rather than megabytes, of course it does depend on the size of your volume and how many files it has).

I find it particularly useful in searching for MP3s that I've backed up to CD/DVD. Using Cathy I can quickly identify the exact media a particular MP3 is on.

scriptdaemonIs there a way to disable it for devs? I get a captcha for almost every post or update I make.

Agreed. It won't let me update this topic at all.

Spammy

I'd wager it was your very spammy looking 'previously on portableapps.com' links that looked like SEO style spam links (which didn't really add anything to the post). I ditched em and I bet you'll be able to edit it now.

Portable !

I always used it as portable.

I have been using this for ages. The version I am currently using on my desktop is 2.28 which was difficult to find. I am not sure if there ever was any kind of installer for Cathy. I have always used it as a portable application.

I am going to try and see if there are any major changes/improvements in this version.

Experience feedback :

The downloader simply downloaded a zipped file and extracted it to the appropriate folder. It was recognised without a problem. There are 3 files. I copied these to my desktop version of Cathy. Works just fine, maybe a little faster. Accessed all the catalogs present. The only difference I see is the fact that the exe is slightly larger and there are 2 small dll files.
