Upon first install AW 2.8.1 on Win XP would not execute. I ran it (the actual program in \bin directory -- not the portable stub) through Dependency Walker and produced the error message:
Error: The Side-by-Side configuration information for "<path>\app\abiword\bin\ABIWORD.EXE" contains errors. This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem (14001).
Out of interest I installed the actual (nonportable) version of AbiWord 2.8.1. It added enough crap to the Registry and Windows subdirectories that I was reminded exactly why I like PortableApps! Anyway that ran fine ... and now AbiWordPortable 2.8.1 ran as well.
So this a.m. I installed the AbiWordWPortable "quick fix" and uninstalled straight AbiWord -- including spending 1/2 hour cleaning up by hand those Registry entries, files, and folders which the uninstall routine did not take care of. Same problem and error message as before.
Judging by the Registry entries, etc. I saw this version of ABW is a tougher nut to portable-ize. I recall ABW installs from pre-Portable days and the only Registry entries were file associations and an HKLM\Software\AbiSuite single line.
It's fixed in revision 2 which I just posted.

Good quick work!
works until I use AbiWordPortable.ini, then...(ERROR: abiword.exe could not be found)
Win XP, SP3
C:\PortableApps\Office\AbiWordPortable
The example INI included has an old path to the Abiword exe. You'll need to change it.

that took care of it.
UPDATE:
Not quite. Windows Event Viewer is reporting tons of system errors with or without an ini. Fresh install, same thing.
none of the plugins are loading.
