[Outdated] Gramps Portable 3.1.1 Test 1

Application: Gramps
Category: genealogy software

Short description: GRAMPS is a Free Software Project for Genealogy, offering a professional genealogy program, and a wiki open to all. It is a community project, created, developed and governed by genealogists.

Download: GrampsPortable_3.1.1.paf.exe

So what can it do:
- brings it's own Python and GTK environment
- adjust drive letter in settings
- no data left on host pc (actually none is even copied)
- default settings are copied on first start
- true to PortableApp.com folder structure
- autodetect language of PortableApps.com and switches Gramps language (english and german only right now)

What it can't do (yet?):
- can't work with common GTK or Python
- can't work with GTK-Legacy for Win98
- should switch more languages
- whatever problems you find Wink

Feedback

Ok first I'm not sure your able to edit the installer to put your logo in instead of the PA.com one. Same with the splash screen. Also not sure if it's supposed to be like this but the program window name is pythonw.exe or something. Lastly there's still some German (I think it's German) text. Last but not least here's the Regshot results.

Hi,

Actually I thinks it's exactly the other way around, I am not allowed to use the PortableApps.com Logo! Right? Wrong? But that's just some graphics anyway, switching those is a matter of minutes, first I would like to find and fix all other problems.

The main window's name is only pythonw.exe until you load your database, this seems to be 'normal' for Gramps, my regular install behaves the same way.

About the regshot: I'm not exactly sure what this means. All those registry keys should be things, that are not really related to Gramps Portable but more related to Windows itself?

German text: Can you be a little more specific? All comments I can find in the source are in english.

I've receive a fair amount of feedback on this one, also from the Gramps development team (who like the idea). Another developer has created a standalone .exe file with the help of py2exe, I'm in contact with him. Having so many small files spells trouble on USB flash drive space and startup time...

The regshot helps with determining no reg keys are left behind that contain any personal info. One of the regulars here will drop in and let us know if its clean or not.

The German text was right at the beginning of the app. I closed the database open screen without opening any database and the title of the fields that had the help info in it were still in German. I can see this is still fairly hard to understand. So I'll screenshot it over next few days as need to redownload and reinstall.

Hmm

The only way I see this being german text is having the PortableApps suite set to german. I default the language to 'en' and only if I read 'de' from the PortableApps suite will I switch the language of Gramps to german (the default language of Gramps should be english)...

Ok here is a screenshot showing the German text. Something I must admit is that I am using the Mod R34. If this text is English when using the official PAP then this is another bug in the mod.

And yes, it's a bug, those german titles are saved in an .ini file. I'll fix that for future releases... Thanx for pointing that out.

Logos?

Can someone please confirm the legality of using the PA.com logo in the installer and the PA dev test splash screen. I'm positive the spahscreen is freely available for anyone releasing a dev test but need clarification regarding the logo for the installer. I would have thought to truly PAF the app it needs to have our logo on it.

But quite some feedback (about 6.500 downloads plus multiple comments) at my blog that I will work into the next release. Busy days ahead in my daytime job though, still hope to have this done by the end of april...

Don't worry, they will fix it soon. However, why don't try family tree software? It works in a similar way to gramp...or you can also hire freelancers at Freelance.com to do the job. You can also find projects to be done. For your advantages, use this "FAMILYTREE" code. Good luck.

Usability

I advised last week that it will not run from a stick on my desktop. If I try and exit portable apps though Gramps throws up error messages as if it is running and needs to shut down.

Out of interest I moved t he same stick to my laptop tried to open Gramps and waited and waited and after SEVEN minutes it actually loaded.

Something is very wrong.

Slow loading

After saying that it took 7 min to load Gramps from my stick and was therefor totally unusable I looked to see if there were an other geneaology applications. Found Ahnenblatt at http://www.ahnenblatt.com/download.html. In less than 7 min it was downloaded, installed, I imported my GEDCOM and printed a seven page ancestor chart.

So the problem is not my stick or my GEDCOM it is just Gramps.

Any chance of updating to 3.2.2 I have been trying to recompile the 3.2.2 to make portable and not getting far quick, then thought wait why me you did such a nice job on 3.1.1 Smile
