PortableApps.com will have soon a version of XnView

Straight from the author.

I emailed him a week or two ago about getting an official PAF version of XnView. There's the launcher, and then there's one made by somebody we collectively don't like. I basically covered all the high points of PAF/PortableApps.com, and just got a reply today. The topic title's the best part; the rest is "best regards".

So I don't know if he means he's already given permission, what with all the freeware... or if he's gonna do it himself. I'd rather the latter, then it wouldn't have to be a live installer.

Cheers to the ball getting rolling on freeware and an official XnView in our future.

Coming

I've already been in touch with him. John Smith is updating his package of it to the current specs, installer and version and we'll be releasing it next week.

Awesome

That's awesome. XnView has become one of my favorite apps lately. I'm running it from the .zip file on the official site. Not sure how portable it really is (by definition) but it "just works" so I don't mind. I'll definitely switch to the PAF version when it comes out, though. And I'll get a text message as soon as it's up on Twitter, so that's nice.

Hear Hear. I second that, who

Hear Hear.

I second that, who cares about the registry so long as you don't need to install the program it doesn't matter unless you are wholly paranoid about being found out for doing something wrong or untoward company policy.

I tried that program CleanafterMe, so does that fix the problem?

It's a personal policy of mine that, if I use something, I return it in as good, if not better condition than when I got it. Not just so as the owner will trust me next time, but just because it's the right thing to do.

If I borrow someone's car, I put more gas in it than I'll need. If I have the time/money, I'll also wash and vacuum it.

At work, I like to vacuum the office before my shift's over, in addition to cleaning up my messes. I don't always do this, but I like to, at least once a week.

And whenever I use portable apps on someone else's computer (mostly, at work) I run CleanAfterMe. I'm not hiding anything, I'm just taking care of any temp files and registry entries I may have left behind, while at the same time performing valuable maintenance tasks which otherwise just don't get done. If they want to see what I'm doing, they can pull up the logs at the server level. I've even got no problem giving a little demo, and one guy here even asked for the URL here (portableapps.com); he came in the next day with an SD card and USB card reader, with the Suite running on it. Only Firefox didn't work, so I showed him how to get on the proxy server here. I guess it's been smooth sailing because I haven't heard of any problems since.

Yes you are right, my bad.

Yes you are right, my bad. It's not all about leaving traces and this and that.

I went to nirsoft website, that guy has some pretty awesome utilities. I also think he is active at the mozilla newsgroups and is of course a valuable contributor.

It would be nice if some of the concepts he employs were to permeate into this situation somehow, as I've always believed right from when this things started that the future is portable, not just the menu and programs, but also the idea that you can administer and fix terminals in corporate and not-for-profit settings, especially windows' systems which often after linked to novel on linux.

Has XnView been delayed?

Also, what about the possibility of Picasa?

John Smith is SmithTech

John Smith is SmithTech, a former PA developer (at least I believe their the same person). He became interested in other pursuits. and hasn't been active in the forums for some time. He has a portable XnView that he developed ages back which I've had on my drives for well over a year now.

I'm looking forward to an official and updated XnView Portable developed by PortableApps.com Smile

I also wish to request that XnView Portable is set to use the X:\Documents\Pictures\ directory as the default location for the browser. Seems the most logical place for a PAM user to store there images and is more practical than starting in the XnView Portable folder.

Thanks again

Clean

I also quite agree with you on the Pictures request. All of our applications that deal with pictures that I know of do that can, change some setting to change the default location. (A good example of the technique used is in the Songbird launcher, just replace Music with Pictures).

I like this idea... ... also

I like this idea...

... also have a review on all the directories for PA's, and create a new directory as well to store the original executables, things like language changers in OO.o actually attract trojans, which ruin things like notepad++

Here's another one to get obscured if you want.

I don't want to appear to be hounding you, so I won't bug you about any others, OK?

Could a mod remove my name and computer name from this post and if possible other recent ones. Thanks Smile

@ J Neutron: I appreciate you pointing it out. I previously had username as Administrator so didn't matter too much in regshots but now that it's my real name I should be more careful. Cheers:)
