Path

Also check that your path isn't too long. It's meant to be installed to X:\PortableApps\OpenOfficePortable. If you add another sub-directory in there it can get too long for OO.o itself to handle.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Tryed it

The first time this happened to me i thought i downloaded a bad installer, so i re-downloaded OO. But the problem you see is what i got.

I guess I'll try my other computer and see if my computer is messed up (most likely).

Is there a reason why?

Is there a reason why it can't be in a deeper path?

I get that most people are going to have everything at x:\portableapps\[installed directory], but in my experience, the fastest way to kill a usb stick is running applications from it. Especially ones that read and write often. Not to mention the horrendous performance: from the stick Firefox takes at least 30 seconds to start/restart, OO took almost 2 minutes, GIMP took almost 5 minutes. Then once started there's delays as programs seem to hang intermittently while they're reading/writing from the stick.

So I'm running them from my Dropbox, which by default is at c:\documents and settings\[my account]\My Documents\My Dropbox

Every other application that I've tried so far has run without a problem from there. Even the launcher/platform has no problems with the deeper path. Nor does installing applications.

I can move my dropbox location to the root of C, but that still puts the portable apps at least one folder too deep for OO. If everything else works fine, I can only conclude that the path limitation for OO is an arbitrary one, and should at the very least be user configurable, if not automatic.

Yes, there is a simple one ...

... we have tried to fix this issue using shortpath routines inside the launcher but it don't work stable and causes other issues.

If You want to use the portables local please create a new partition for it. Its a simple an secure way and will give You an easy way to handle all Your portables.

Moving dropbox to C seems to be working...

Thank you for the explanation Marko, however, OO is running from C:\My Dropbox\PortableApps\OpenOfficePortable.

I moved the dropbox location after posting and have been testing it out. Seems to be working ok for now, but even with the few portable apps I've got installed at the moment I'm butting up to the 2GB limit, and plenty more apps waiting to install. I guess ultimately I'll re-purpose an external drive. Hopefully performance of a HDD over USB will be better than from a stick Smile

Better Yet..

Somebody showed me this a couple of weeks ago:

You can keep your dropbox in your documents!
(BTW, even if you're not as paranoid as I am, it's usually not a safe idea to run as an admin full-time, because you can always right click-> run as if you need admin rights (like UAC, only not annoying).
