Problems with my firefox portable

Hello,
I have problems with firefox portable and installing addons.
I used to had firefox portable running with my favorite addons (i.e. xmarks, foxyproxy, greasemonkey etc.) then my firefox portable became real slow, so I uninstalled deleted the folder, where it was installed and tried to re-install and from that moment - I cannot install any more addons to my firefox portable (for example, it sais that xmarks and foxyproxy are incompatible with firefox 3.5.4 while they actually are, every time I restart firefox it asks me to do restart again so my addons will be installed even though I did not install new addons etc).
my only guess is that some files are in a different directory than the installation directory- or maybe the problem is somewhere else.
I would appreciate any help on the matter.

Any suggestions

How I can debug it, or where can I send the error messages in the error console?

you can

post them here.

One thing you could try:rename your /Data folder to "Data2". That will make firefox recreate it and start with new clean settings. The problem should be gon but you'll have to readd all your bookmarks and passwords. You can try importing these files from your other Data folder.

Check your drive for filesystem errors. I doubt that that is causing it but it cant hurt.

Here is an example

1st of all thanks for your help.
second, I once again, removed the folder, reintslled the firefox portable 3.5.4 and downloaded the .xpi files of the folowing addons: xmarks 3.3.3, foxyproxy 2.1.4 and adblock plus 1.1.1, installed them and before restarting I received the following error messages:

1. many items of: "Warning: Unknown property 'border-radius'. Declaration dropped.
Source File: https://addons.mozilla.org/css/amo2009/style.min.css?53813
Line: 1"

2. some items with : "Error: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE) [nsISafeOutputStream.finish]" nsresult: "0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE)" location: "JS frame :: file:///G:/PortableApps/FirefoxPortable/App/firefox/components/nsSessionStore.js :: sss_writeFile :: line 2812" data: no]
Source File: file:///G:/PortableApps/FirefoxPortable/App/firefox/components/nsSessionStore.js
Line: 2812"

I'm sorry that I cannot be more accurate but there are hundreds of errors similar to the 1st line and I cannot copy all of them here.

Thanks!

One Thing At a Time

When trying to find an error, it's best to do one thing at a time.

First install a fresh copy, ensure it works properly.

Then install *ONE* extension, restart, ensure it works properly.

Etc.

Ok

Step back, start fresh, try the other extensions. If they work fine, then it's a bad extension (FoxyProxy) and probably happened after it updated to the current version. Maybe it happened when they transitioned to a for-profit model and updated their code.

The more curious thing is

that after restarting, foxy proxy is not shown at all at the addons screen but instead the microsoft .net assistant (which I did not request to install).

I get the same phenomenon

By the way

Foxyproxy works just fine on my regular firefox installed on a different PC and I have no issues with it.

I'm sorry to bother

But I just want to know if this is a local problem that I am the only one facing or if you found this case to be an issue.

No One Else

I've never heard of this happening before and haven't been able to reproduce it on any PCs even in guest mode. Can you check your installed plugins on that PC (not extensions, plugins) and see what's what? Otherwise, I don't have any other ideas offhand... anyone?

What do you mean in plugins?

On that PC I don't have firefox installed at all.
If you want my guess (and it's only a guess) I think that microsoft has something to do with that with their .net addon that they push into the firefox.
(I hope not to get sued by them for suggesting it...) Smile

Try

Microsoft does install the .NET Framework Assistant when you have .NET 3.5 SP1 installed (the vulnerability has since been fixed and the blocklist entry removed).

Please try starting Firefox Portable in safe mode and see what is in the plugins tab of the Add-ons window. There being Firefox-compatible plugins which Firefox Portable will use is not dependent on Firefox being installed locally; you will find several plugins at least there on any ordinary machine.

I had this problem too.

I'm new here so hi to all of you.

Recently I had that problem described here and I couldn't install new extensions or in some cases Firefox requested restart after restart in order to install a new extension, which was wrong.

I've found that one reason for this type of problems is that a file called extensions.ini is missing in the data/profile folder. This file contains a list of extensions installed.

For some reason from time to time I loose this file. It sometimes happens after some switches between different computers, sometimes it happens after connecting the USB stick to a different port than usual.

The first time I've noticed this was after an upgrade from version 3.5.4 to version 3.6 beta 1. I've decided to revert back to 3.5.4 via a backup but probably this wasn't necessary after all.
