Problem with Multi Instances

Hi, regarding FF 3.52 portable... when I put Multi Instances to true then it doesn't have any positive effect. There pops up a message saying there is already another version running.

Is it a bug?

Cheers

I got "AllowMultipleInstances=false" and still...

I got "AllowMultipleInstances=false" and still can open several instances of the same FFP. But I can't open another instance after FFP was closed as long as a firefox.exe is shown as still running in task manager (happens rarely to me).

Firefox.exe is firefox's

Firefox.exe is firefox's executable file. No new versions of firefox will run until that closes. That's a check built into firefox also.

This is meant to allow you to

This is meant to allow you to run a Local version of firefox and then firefox portable. That or run two different instances of Firefox Portable from different directories.

In any case, you can't run two instances of the same installation of firefox at once.

Misunderstanding?

"In any case, you can't run two instances of the same installation of firefox at once."

Yes, I can. That was the true meaning of my post above. Wink (I don't have a "local" installation of FF, BTW)

No, you can't. You are

No, you can't. You are running multiple WINDOWS of the same firefox instance, but you aren't running multiple instances. There is a difference between the two.

And like I said, you don't have to run local FF, just run FFP from two different install directories - IE - X:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\ and X:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortableSecond\.

Hi Gizmokid2005, but for

Hi Gizmokid2005, but for example the portable version of [link to illegal site removed by mod JTH] can run multiple FF without having two different install directories.

What's the difference? Is the mentioned version of that site not really portable, so that it writes values to the registry?

Also the version of [link to unauthorized Firefox build removed by mod JTH] runs multiple instances without having different directories. I'm able to double click FirefoxPortable.exe multiple times and it opens multiple instances without pop up message boxes saying there is already firefox.exe running. So it opens new windows just by clicking portable.exe. So you could also double click .html files and new windows are opened although there is already FF running.

Hm, but I would rather like to use the version of portableapps.com.

What I want to say is that

What I want to say is that all this is not possible with portableapps.com FF 3.52.

You can

Just not in combination with the switch to enable multiple instances. Multiple instances is so you can run a local and a portable one at the same time on your own machine. But in that mode, Firefox itself doesn't support secondary launches.

Secondary launch is when you have Firefox Portable running with a window up and, say, pass a link to FirefoxPortable.exe and it starts up a new tab in the existing window.

Multiple instances means you can have your local copy of Firefox with all your business bookmarks running on your office PC *AND* launch your portable copy of Firefox alongside it with all your personal settings and bookmarks. In this special mode, secondary launches won't work due to the way Firefox itself handles them.

Make sense?

So, use it without the INI so AllowMultipleInstances is set to false and you can run FirefoxPortable.exe as many times as you want.

Not necessary to do this way

What if you want to carry around both personal and work with you?

Just make two copy of FFP, set both AllowMultipleInstance to true (see my recent posting for a fix to make FFP 3.52 work in this manner)

Open new Window

Hi there,

Firefox cannot run in multiple instances, but when I doubleclick on firefox.exe of my local installation it opens a new window.
Can this behaviour ported to FFP?

New Window

It just opens a new window of the currently running Firefox instance. Firefox does this by design. The same thing will happen if you run FirefoxPortable.exe again. If you want new passed links to open in new tabs instead of new windows, there are settings in options to accomplish that.

I just fired up 3.5.5 and it worked just fine here.

Keep in mind that, as already discussed, if you're using the INI and setting up multiple instances, it will NOT work (never has, probably never will) due to the way Firefox itself handles new windows. There is no workaround.

Firefox passes off to a running process. If there are two firefoxes with two different profiles, it doesn't know which one to use. If you pass the full profile path info, it still doesn't like it and will say it's not responding.

Keep in mind that the ability to run multiple instances, while documented, is purposely not easy for normal users to enable because it's imperfect.

Fix

Seems like FFP 3.52 is missing an INI file at root.

Solution:
1) copy FirefoxPortable.ini from Other\Source directory to root (same folder where FirefoxPortable.exe is)
2) edit to suit and you're done!

On Purpose

The INI file isn't there by default. Advanced users can copy it over and edit it as needed. It's never been included by default.

Missed that one

Sorry I didn't realize that it has always been like that.

I'm curious to know why it isn't there by default? It's quite useful.

Small %

Only a very small % of users need it. And it's changed options a few times (which the user is responsible for updating to). Some options aren't officially recommended (like multiple instances) since it'll leave files behind and Firefox itself isn't really happy running in that mode.
