Yea, lets just hope it works

Yea, lets just hope it works and people actually read the guide lines.
Maybe we can get the moderators to delete comments if someone goofs.
Don't know if that will still allow the author to re-edit the post though.

Does anyone realize that wsm23 is the only one who has posted anything that is relevant to PAM themes?

Probably because Ryan posted here. He seems to cause irrelevant conversations  (back to here).

Was only joking around. I'm pretty sure he has no problem with Ryan. Nor was he complaining, only joking saying the reason this forum became so off-topic was because of Ryan, which was also a joke. Also notice the " Biggrin "

.. was that after Ryan deletes my post I still cannot edit it. Your reply stopped me from editing the others also. Kinda like stepping on the new sod on a lawn to chase the kids off of it.

Post was my bad. Won't happen again. Sry.:( Still think after John updates the PAM then we need a Skins or Theme only forum or sub-forum.

Somewhere to post skins...

I'm pretty sure that if we asked we could get a PAM section put in at deviantart.com and most likely at skinbase.org since they have the most extensive category list of skinnable apps anywhere.

I've just been waiting for the theme engine to mature a bit more before I request the category be added.

Can you add a link to the post only section about the PAM 1.0.2 (Beta 3)?
https://portableapps.com/node/4571 (here is the link).

With almost 1500 guest at any one time people might get confused if they can't figure out how to install the themes.

Theme instalation

I consider myself a fairly competent and intelligent person and can figure most things out on my own.... but you guys are posting all these different themes that are all great and everything, but I can not find instructions on how to install a theme to the portable apps menu at all... I've looked everywhere I could possibly think of... Did I miss something?

Thanks

Awesome. Thanks. Now I just need to figure out why in the world the new base menue didn't install over my older one. I assume, since I started with the base to begin with and added apps as I needed them, that I could just install the "newer menu" base on top of it... But since I had to re-apply the patch, I guess that's not the case...

You have to

unpack the "newer menu" right into the \PortableApps\PortableAppsMenu folder and cant install it using the menu.
Do you know that?

Here's how I do it...

If you want, make a backup of your original ..PortableApps\PortableAppsMenu\App\DefaultData\Theme folder.

First, I create a working folder with the theme name (e.g., "RiverTheme").
After I create my custom background.jpg, drive_space_slider.bmp, and background_top.bmp, I zip them up as "RiverTheme.zip". When I want to apply the "RiverTheme" theme, I just unzip to ..PortableApps\PortableAppsMenu\App\DefaultData\Theme folder (overwriting the existing files... that's why you back them up)

The new theme will only get applied after you restart PAM.

Don't quite understand What you mean

I downloaded the Portable Apps Base and tried to install it on top of the previous instalation on the root of the drive (Sandisk Cruzer Micro 2gb U3). That's when i had to reinstall the pre-XP patch. The program runs now, but it's the same GUI that i had before...
I was assuming, since I didn't want to re-customize my portable apps already installed, that I didn't need to install the new suite... but I can't find anywhere to just download/install the menu like you talk about.... People talk about what it is and does, but not where it's at...

I dont fully understand your problem

Do you use the latest version of the menu?
You can get it from here

On a new 512 Lexar

I installed the standard suite freshly downloaded from the main site.
According to "All versions of the PortableApps Suite include the integrated PortableApps Menu (pictured at right) and the PortableApps Backup utility along with a set of custom icons, an autoplay configuration, folders and a quick start shortcut.", I should be seeing the new portable apps menu... however it may be the 1.0.1 patch that I have to install to view it on my Win2k machine that's reverting to the old menu....

Does that, now, make sense?

No reason

Remember, the themes arrangement in the last release was a pre-release. Theme support is not officially released yet. It was just so themers can get their feet wet. They'll need to package them into the appropriate theme format with the release that officially supports themes.

theme guidelines listings

I wonder if there are any officila guidelines yet on what format the themes should be? I see some in jpg, some in gif, some in bmp. I thought it was going to be png, for the transparency? Or is it not supported enough?

.

Right, I'm going to say this one last time.

We can't use PNGs because there are no open source libraries, written in Delphi, that PAM can use. GIF supports limited transparency. BMP and JPG sort of support transparency through a "magic colour", which is some sort of purple.

I don't see the connection w/ open source

Why can't someone make a file that is png using their legally owned graphics editor, and use that in a PAM skin? I don't understand why png is not available in open source, or why someone has to use delphi.

Or is it that PAM can only use delphi generated images?
Or if there is another link with the info, let me know.

I'm not trying to break the Open Source rules here. I just thought that since this thread was about themes, there should be guidelines, maybe edited into the original post about guidelines like format, file size, what bits and pieces/components are in a standard theme. It may be somewhere in the archives, but this thread is supposed to be "it".

PAM was written in Delphi,

PAM was written in Delphi, so it needs Delphi libraries to handle graphics, and currently there is no open-source Delphi PNG-library.

Okay then, but .

So does that mean delphi based PAM cannot display png files from anywhere, or is it because of PortableApps policy that one can't post them here.

If I was going to make my own themes, do I have to use a delphi based program?

Like he said...

There is no PNG support built into Delphi and there were no PNG libraries for Delphi that are open source. So, the menu *CAN'T* display PNGs. You can post them all you want, but the menu doesn't use em.

That said, I'm investigating use of a different PNG library in an upcoming release. There will be no alpha transparency to the desktop, though (Delphi doesn't support it).

Why on earth would it be against some oddball policy to post a PNG? Please do your homework before making accusations against this site in the future.

we aren't allowed to post non open source content, right?

So with the mention of Delphi not having open source png support or files, I figured that content derived from no-open source programs, like it is with links to non-open source programs for portableApps, it wouldn't be allowed.

And in my search, I didn't see folks posting any png stuff, so I was wondering why since I know I've read you (JTH) many times extolling the virtues of png over the other formats.

It wasn't an accusation, it was a question and request in a thread set about themes to be have information about theme creation/concepts/ideas in it from folks who make themes. My mistake, this thread must seems to be more about announcing your themes and comments from those already in the know.

Tips for Quick icon creation

I've seen more than one comment on how much time it requires to make custom icons.

While it can be frustrating, I've been able to make passable icons fairly quickly from existing hi-res photos in GIMP.

Scaling hi-res images to 24x24 can give unrecognizable results, but I've found that if I start with an image that's pretty clear, and scale it in steps, it looks OK.
First, I'll crop it to square, then scale to 100x100 pixels.
Next, scale to 50x50, then finally to 24x24.
This seems to give much better results than scaling in one big jump.

Check out this example:
http://picasaweb.google.com/SolanusTheEastWind/PortableApps/photo#508184...

Original Pictures of flowers were 130x130. If you start with much larger images, you should probably scale down in steps from that, e.g. 1000 to 500 to 250 to 100 to 50 to 24.

Hope it is helpful...

Help with Pink Transparent Areas

Hey all,

I'm creating a Royale Noir theme for myself and everything looks great except for one thing. The top right and top left corners are bright pink.

What is the specific color I need to make it so that it will be transparent? Do I do this for both the background.jpg and background_top.bmp?

Thank you so much for your help,
Timothy

I know there are a few

I know there are a few Vista-like themes floating around out there, but I couldn't find one that looked exactly how I wanted. So, I took a crack at making my own and called it PAVista (or PAV for short). I think it looks damn sexy, if I do say so myself. (Link opens in a new tab/window. No, that is not my wallpaper color; it is the transparency color for PAM theme images.)

Now, you may be wondering how I got rid of the PA logo/banner that PAM forces to display. This brings me to why I posted in this topic, rather than the other one. That first image is a cross between the source file I was working with in PSP and a screenshot of the menu in action. This is the actual screenshot. As you can see, PAM is forcing its own banner to display, and is making quite a mess with the transparency color.

So, I need to know if there is a way to disable the forced banner or, if not, whether there's a workaround I can use to do so. I realize that I would have more freedom of expression in making a theme for the PAM Mod, but I have my reasons for sticking with the official beta release.

Any suggestions?

Hi riax,

Hi riax,

first, the theme looks nice.but now to your question, you cant disable the logo for the PAM / Beta PAM. it works only for the mods (this is why use and work with the mods Wink ).
possibly in the next PAM version (with the NEW PAM theme format) you can disable that. but nobody knows who looking that new format (only john knows that).

now is that your choise
no banner = MOD
banner = original /Beta

greetz and have fun

BTW: Nice logo Wink

Nope.

There's currently no way to do it. There is the possibility of John adding it as part of the new theming system though.

Hmmm. :\ That's what I was

Hmmm. Beee That's what I was afraid of. I hope the ability to disable the default banner is implemented in the final release of 1.1.

I appreciate the help, guys.

BTW: It's too bad I can't use it in a PAM 1.1 theme (yet). Wink

EDIT: I've taken the screenshots of my first attempt down. The two links in my previous post are now broken.

Mini-Themes

I just posted a link to the folder where my Mini-Themes are in the Themes Only forum (here):
https://portableapps.com/node/6178#comment-67408

They are grouped according to color and/or icon sets. I have tried to keep the files small in case you don't want all of them you can simply download the ones you want and ignore the rest. The theme is based on one I found here called "Nano", but it is a little larger to accomidate more icons (buttons). I have made several custom buttons based on how I use my USB flash disk. Details are in the README.txt file that accompanies each set. Play around with them and see if you like them. Feel free to modify the buttons to your needs. I have included a blank icon with each set to make creating your own custom ones easier. Plase let me know what you think of my first attempt at theming(sp?).

Could you be more specific?

Your request, while apparently quite emphatic due to your use of all caps and your txtspk abbreviation of the word "please", is nevertheless unclear.

When you refer to "sonic", are you referring to:
1. Sonic the Hedgehog? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Sonic
2. Sonic, the fast food restaurant? http://www.sonicdrivein.com/
3. Sonic Foundry? http://www.sonicfoundry.com/
4. sonic, having to do with sound? http://mw1.m-w.com/dictionary/sonic

Also not sure what "broken link to tails" means, but it brings to mind a fractured sacral vertebra. Biggrin

Finally, creating a theme is actually pretty easy, especially if you don't want to change the actual icons.
Just go to the ..PortableApps\PortableAppsMenu\App\DefaultData\Theme folder, and create backup copies of the background.jpg, drive_space_slider.bmp, and background_top.bmp pictures (to keep the originals), then edit the files.

I think...

...I can help you with the broken link. I didn't exactly realize that the way I had linked the files would expire. Here is the link, and I'll fix the others in the main page.

Sorry about that, dude!

Thanks

I was browsing the development forum because one day I came up with the idea of making my own PAM's on The Gimp. I want to share them with other people, and soon I'll do it since I am relatively new to these kind of stuff and I need a little time to organize some things.
What I didn't think (don't know why I didn't) is that many others had thought the same as me, so I want to thank all the people who share their ideas and their cool work with others and also say that your work is awesome.
I will soon post my own PAM's so all of you can check them.
Cheers from Colombia

And I believe John wants to set up on here integrated into this page so is there a need for another one?

High quality and RU

I want to create a website with the themes of high quality, but, for example in this forum thread is the "outline" and the theme of poor quality!
Just want to make PortableApps in Russia's Internet, as few of the normal users know about this wonderful site!
There would be manual in Russian, and in the future, possibly in other languages (except for EN and DE - they have to ptc.kain-planet.de)

A matter of taste

I think that the quality is mostly a matter of a person's taste. Personally, I really like PunkWJ's themes (especially "Broken Glass" and "Fabric"), but I also like a few from PTC ("Strata Lava and "Wetpaint"). Smile

Also I like to try using the site in Russian. Google Translate does a good job of it, but I want to learn Russian some day, so it's nice to try to use the site without translating 8)

Both already coming

We already have a partner who have/are translating the PortableApps.com website into Russian (I can't say who it is yet).

As for themes, they will be in this site. Any website you create for it will be purely third party, and not official in any way.

Also, could you please remove the links from your signature; links in signatures are not allowed by the forum rules (please reread them).
