It could be the Monday after that.
Then again it might be christmas.
Everyones getting fed up of waiting.
You shouldn't make deadlines if you can't keep them.
The best thing to do is to keep quiet and then just release it when it's ready instead of saying, It'll be out Wednesday, then saying Friday, then saying Sunday e.t.c.
It's already been two Wednesdays since the first promise of the next version, and at the expense of the competition, no less. Back on the Lifehacker poll, I mean.
And with the most requested feature shelved, what is this new version going to feature? Just the updater? Might as well call 2.0 beta 3 "2.0 final" and focus on "2.1".
This is the point I've been making about Audacity all along. And now it's become true for the Platform as well. You have the stable version (Audacity 1.2.6 and PortableApps.com Platform 1.5.2) which are decent, but far enough behind the "beta" that anybody who knows better is using the beta anyway. And either development is stalled or new versions continue to have the "beta" tag, so ultimately the "beta" becomes the preferred version. And the problem is that "beta" is supposed to mean unstable, a work in progress, to be tested, not for production environments. But with so many programmers abusing the "beta" tag, "beta" has come to mean "bonus features", with no caveats about stability or anything. (At least "alpha" is still feared. Way, way back in the day I got my paws on an alpha version of Whistler (what would become Windows XP) and let me tell you, that was a MESS. You couldn't use it. You could install it, play around in it, but nothing worked.)
OK can everyone stop crying and let the man do his thing I mean he does have a life outside of portableapps and things do come up and issues arise and a release date I mean he gave people one because everyone kept bitching about it and well guess what if there are problems then hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm it gets pushed back would you rather him put out a problematic program so you can them cry about that it will be done when it is done I mean hell I am waiting for it also but I have other things going on & I know how to be patient so John let me apologize for all these rude people on here and take whatever time is necessary I would rather get it in 2010 sometime & it work right then not working at all. Thanks for all the hard work & time you put into these programs and hope your holidays are good.
Quit being a brown-noser. People are expressing their frustration, and who can blame them? John had made several promises on several dates to release Beta 4 and have yet to fulfill any of those promises. Granted that John has his own life to worry about, but let the truth be told, he shouldn't have made promises which he wasn't able to deliver; especially through several accounts, and especially when he has thousands and if not millions of users supporting his work.
I believe it's best that John should make a final notice stating that the release of Beta 4 will be released on an unidentified date due to some technical difficulty or whatever the reason being. That would be a more professional approach than the continuous false hopes he's implementing upon his fellow fans, or leaving users in the dark from the lack of progress status. At the same time everyone else should just forget about Beta 4 and wait until 2.0 or 2.1 is finally released. This way John wouldn't have to feel so forced into delivering Beta 4, and the users wouldn't have to anxiously await for the release.
I believe it's best that John should make a final notice stating that the release of Beta 4 will be released on an unidentified date due to some technical difficulty or whatever the reason being.
Currently, his kitty is sick. Good enough for me.
Too many lonely hearts in the real world
Too many bridges you can burn
Too many tables you can't turn
Don't wanna live my life in the real world
Yes, my kitten is in the vet and may not make it through the weekend. And my girlfriend and I have the flu (swine/H1N1, it seems, from the set of symptoms) since Sunday night. So my energies (what little I have had the past several days) went to keeping app updates posted and the hardware contract that is about to be executed as our other admins have been busy. I had kept a low profile on that as I don't normally like to inject my personal life into my work here. But there you have it. Can some folks please relax now and just wait a bit longer for your free open source software? It'll be worth it.
And for the animal lovers, please send some good thoughts Leo's way.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
well soon John, I know from personal experience that H1N1 is pretty nasty, just ignore the whiners, the vast overwhelming majority of users really appreciate what you do.
best wishes to you and your family, also all the best for your cat. Highly appreciate your good work on a great (and free) product! Things are not easy in todays world, and we need to learn to be patient due to whatever reason. Best luck - Pietro.
... and believe me, I know what it means to make a promise in the good will to hold it and than to realize thatthere are things with much higher priority i real life like own health.
Stay in bed and take the time You need!
Paid for Software more or less?
What You need is OSS!
Get better soon, John! I'm rooting for you!
Hope your kitten gets better soon as well...
Best wishes,

"The question I would like to know, is the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe and Everything. All we know about it is that the Answer is Forty-two, which is a little aggravating."
Hope you and your GF get better I had that awhile ago cold chills, scratchy throat, headache, hard to hold anything down & sharp pains all over your body I feel your pain. You might want to try taking some Airborne & Gatorade and lots of rest plus chicken soup that might be the only thing you can keep down. Get well and hope you are better for thanksgiving.
I've seen you putting up posts but have not seen mention of how ya'll are doing. Hope all has gone well with your kitten, your girl friend and yourself. Tom
I agree with everything lilking has to say, although I wouldn't use quite such strong terms.
John does have a life of his own (apparently quite a full one at that), and his countless hours on PA.c are all volunteer hours. Who's paying him for that? Not the people crabbing about release dates, that's for sure.
Yes, he said he'd release the menu awhile ago. No, he hasn't done it. Here's the killer for all you complainers though - he most certainly meant what he said. As with any other person, things can and do happen to him too. He got delayed; big deal. Now get over it.
And guys, let's please stop this; it's gone far enough already.
"The question I would like to know, is the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe and Everything. All we know about it is that the Answer is Forty-two, which is a little aggravating."
OK now he had a release date & he had a wedding to go to then his cat was sick guess what if anyone here can contribute to the finalization of the projects then do so. If not let this man do what he does and it will get here when it gets here just thank him for all the work he does and without him we'd be dealing with this after market virus ridin hacks that are out there.
Now, now, usbtastic... this isn't just any cat, this is John's cat!
Wishing you, your gf and your cat the best, John - get some rest!

I posted the one about the gunner, with the swear sort of obfuscated, but apparently was still too much and got deleted. Sorry if it was a little overboard. It can also be found on the page you linked. There are some great lines from that movie.
I grew up with that movie... the TV edit. Bought it on DVD, the swearing is too much. It's not the movie I grew up with. Less funny. I'm normally against censorship, but the DVD should have included the TV edit. It can be done with software... but doing so is illegal under DMCA. What a shame...
Respectfully as always, John (at least in intentions...), it's been three weeks... how are things progressing?
I saw you post a week or so ago on Twitter (I think on your personal account @JohnTHaller -- I follow both, so sometimes I confuse them -- you posted something to the effect of... ah, lemme look... "is coding with a kitten on his lap." 7 days ago actually.
So, from that, can we take it to mean your kitten's gotten better, or is it still up in the air?
Don't suppose you have a "beta of the beta" for folks to play around with? Heh... until my home computer's up and running, I'm not testing anything, so I'm out of the "when's-it-gonna-be-done" race.
Also, what was that big publisher, since nothing really major came out newly on the freeware front? Did it happen and it was just underwhelming, or is it still in the works?
Take care, if you're still recovering. Ah hell, take care regardless, and happy Turkey Day in advance (won't be until Turkey Day I get back on the Net anyway).
Any news on the update, it was originaly promised in October.
It is now nearly December so whats holding it up.
I know there was a wedding, then the kitten got sick, then John got sick but everyone should be fine by now.
Was the update ever ready or was it just bull to impress people at lifehacker.
Lets be knowing John,Whats the hold up ?
when you open the thread in a two (or more) page view it marks it as read, so when you go to page 2 the "NEW" notice in the upper right of the post is missing.
October to December
There was/is a beta, I believe that, but I do believe the "it'll be out Wednesday" mess at that Lifehacker poll was just to sway votes to this site. Like anything, it's a work in progress. It's probably ready to release any time, but no artist is ever truly satisfied with their work.
Also with categories, a feature in a fork of the menu for 2 years now, being shelved for the "next" (2.1) version, I don't really see what's worth waiting for. Development of the platform itself is basically stalled, for all intents and purposes, but the current beta is fine for most purposes. Need more features? Get one of the forks.
Losing faith in the site
Don't have faith in anyone but yourself. And God if you're among the faithful. But don't count on software developers to come through for you, particularly when you're not paying them. They do this for fun and you're not paying for it, so you can't reasonably expect them to meet your expectations any reasonable percentage of the time. It's a shame they lead us along like they do, but again, we're not paying them, and they have lives of their own.
The 'new' tag
So click the New link from the forum view or the tracker. If all the replies are on page 2, it'll take you to the first one, and they'll be marked. If even one reply is on page 1, it'll still take you to the first one, and your problem stands... yeah, it's a problem with Drupal there's no real easy fix for.
They do this for fun and you're not paying for it, so you can't reasonably expect them to meet your expectations any reasonable percentage of the time.
I did a bathroom program for fun and sent it to my teachers, and nobody looked at it :(.

I cannot believe the callousness of some of the posters here.
When life gets in the way, you have to re-assess. In case none of you have had the H1N1, try it - then see if your life progresses normally for the next 2 weeks. Or 3. Or 4. Hell, maybe even the next 2 months.
John has put a *lot* of time and effort into this project since its inception, and I am pretty positive that there is no track record for John missing deadlines this badly. Believe what you want to - but please keep your whining to yourself.
In case you had not noticed from *other* threads in the forums, there was *ALSO* a back log of apps not showing up at SourceForge due to issues at *their* end. So, even if John had released if in the last several days, I bet you wouldn't have known about it....
Please, take a chill pill and relax. Life really *does* get in the way sometimes. So do hosting server issues, major show-stopping bugs, and even (perish the thought) natural disasters. It just sucks that they occur to good people like John and not to folks like some of the ones that are complaining and posting spiteful opinions on here just because he is a couple of months late on Beta 4.
Wow. Just wow.
@John - I have been using PA for a very long time, and I have decided to put my money where my mouth is - sending you an email with the email address I used with PayPal to make a very long-time deserved donation to your project. Please, ignore the naysayers, and take care of yourself and your g/d and kitten - we'll still be here.

that, please educate me, so I should not take advantage of your kindness.
But I wish to have my that account back.
For anyone following those status updates, the recommended way to find what's up with John on the forum is 1. click his name, 2. click the Track tab -- or use this direct link: https://portableapps.com/user/2/track
That Track page lists the topics that JTH either started or commented on, and sorts them in order of which topic was last commented on - by anyone. So, you may see a topic there that John started (it does list the author) but he may not have participated in the discussion for a while.
For instance, the thread "PortableApps.com Platform 2.0 Beta 3 Testing" is quite high on the list on the Track page, but John hasn't commented on it since October 13th.
I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.
