Good USB Flash Drive Recomendations

I'm currently using a 256MB Cruzer Micro, which I picked up because it was only 15 CAD at Staples. I'd like to buy one that's a couple GB in size. I notice that some of the apps lag a little when running from the drive, and not when running from my hard drive, and I assume this has to do with the read/write speed of the device.

So, does anyone have any recommendations for a fairly large, fast and reliable USB flash drive?

Thanks. Smile

I like my...

Corsair Flash Voyager 4 GB; fast and inexpensive.

I had to look up my forum password in Yadabyte Passwords just to make this post, lol.

Like all things technology, newer is usually faster

I'd have thought that any new reputable branded name flashdrive would probably see performance gains over older hardware.

I believe the sandisk cruzer range (inc titanium) are meant to be quite speedy, and the cruzer goes up to 4gigs now.

Washed up?

My Corsair Flash Voyager went through the washer and dryer last week and it came out working fine.

I have both a ($75) 2GB

I have both a ($75) 2GB SanDisk Cruzer mini (skinned) and a ($175) U3 4GB SanDisk Cruzer mini and I must say that the price on the 4GB was a tad bit high but the speed on it was pretty good. My 2GB SanDisk has a very slow read speed.

I have the 6 gig Western

I have the 6 gig Western Digital Pocket Drive.

It's not flash, it has a small ~1 inch, 5400 rpm hard drive in it. It's fairly quick to launch PFF and PTB which is what I use most often. It's a tiny bit larger than a flash drive (about 1 inch by 1.5 inches with a built in swivel out USB adapter.

Has worked great for me and I love the space of 6 gig!

Because it's not flash

Do you have to install anything before you can use it on a PC ?

That is the sig.

Dyce has an old laptop hard drive in an external case that connects via USB &/or 1394(Firewire). I have 2 of 'em just waiting for external cases...

...

Mass Storage Device is a universal standard. It can be implemented in any drive regardless of what the physical medium is.

40 external

I use a 40 gig 2.5" drive in an external case. Actually put it together for data transfers at work (the network is piss poor in some areas in the company) but it has morphed into personal space with Email, music, maintenance apps and the occasional hacker tool... Often I come across a machine with a stored password that has to be input on another computer and no one remembers what it is. Password revealers can help!

Works like a champ on XP and 2000... needs a driver for the occasional 9x/ME box but the driver disk fits into the sleeve, so it's all good.

Bigger than most but still fits in my pocket. No worries about write cycles. Smile

Hello Timothy; I am looking

Hello Timothy;

I am looking to purchase either thee same one you have or Sony's 8 GB. But I keep getting the idea that a USB hard drive may be to slow for the Portable Apps.

Have you found thgis to be true. Are the USB flash drives faster. I have only read a very few reviews on useing a USB hard drive with portable apps. Most seem to suggest that they are very slow for apps like OpenOffice which they say does a lot of reading from the drive.

La Cie Drives

I use an hard drive of 20Gb, I've a lot of things inside, and I agree with you before passing to that monster (portable) I notice the same slow works of the apps. I could suggest a Memorex 4Gb usb stick or the newer San disk at 8 Gb, some friends of mine said that are faster than the bolt??

seems some are faster than others.

Here's one review. It's a bit hard to find other 4GB review - have you seen any?

* Note: watch out for reviews that don't compare sticks of the same capacity. There seems to be big differnces in performance compared to capacity.

Kingston DataTraveler Elite

I just ordered one of these tonight. From what I have read this USB drive has an encryption chip that handles all the encryption. Before I ordered it I called Kingston tech support to verify that admin permissions were not required to encrypt/decrypt data on the secure partition. They confirmed that admin permisions were NOT needed. Has anyone had any experience with these drives? If so, how well does the "on the fly" encryption/decryption work? Thanks!

You're about to be disappointed.

That's a half-truth.

The Data Traveler Elite's tutorial in PDF covers pretty much all aspects except it does not emphasize enough that both programs require admin privilege in Windows 2000/XP. Alternatively, you can try non-admin service for Windows 2000/XP, available on Kingston's download section, to grant non-administrator access to TravelerSafe+ and MyTraveler.

Read it here.

And the bit about the non-admin service... once this service is installed on a PC, then a non-admin can do the encrypt/decrypt bit on the drive. But, being that it is a service.......

Anyone care to finish my sentence?

i use a 30 GB 2,5" hard

i use a 30 GB 2,5" hard drive. Bought the case and the hd seperately at ebay.

partitioned into 2 partitions: 1 gb for portable apps (about 500 mb used so still a lot of space for adittional things) and the rest for the transport of data...
