Lots of reg keys, but as far as I know, they are not considered a problem !

I had a try on this free version, since I've got some experience using the current version. All I was missing (or couldn't find) was the option to customize file associations and the open command prompt option !

Thanx for developing this !

And....

yes, I did open the Help window in XYplorerFree Portable!

As well

C:\Documents and Settings\Gringoloco\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\19QHLOP0\xyplorer[1].zip

Is left behind, after the portable installation.

Yes it is Smile

The open command prompt is a right-click on the tree and the file associations are at Tools/List Management/File Associations... (I don't use them personally, PFA for me). I have tried the latest paid version but it refuses to work with my clipboard manager (CLCL) so I've stuck with the free one and haven't found anything lacking.

Thanks for pointing out the Help directories (I already had them so didn't notice). I've set it so that if XYplorer creates them, it removes them on exit. Fixed

I didn't think the GID file would be considered a case for moving back and forth, to be honest. Isn't it one of those 'recreate as needed' type things? But it can't hurt so I put it in anyway. Fixed

Temporary Internet Files. I think the NSIS Inetc plugin is dependent on IE so it's created by the online installer. So, as none of the official ones deal with it, not fixed.

Thanks for testing and reporting back Smile

Sorry, I don't want to put you of, but I had the same problem with Winamp Browser.

For an official release, I don't think there will be anything you can do, other than trying to disable the browser function ! Sad

I'm hoping that whenever Winamp will become an official release, I could keep an unofficial release on the beta release pages, which includes the browser function !

It's such a shame haveing to get rid of the browser functions !

Do you know any other solutions ?

Solutions

It's OK, you haven't put me off, I'm just ignoring them, the same as all the other apps do! Just like the MUI Cache, Prefetch etc. which all seem to be accepted as a 'Windows thing'. Which is fine by me. I don't think solutions are required. Are they? Especially as they're created by the installer, in this case.

I'm sure this will never be an official release candidate, nor am I trying to make it. That's not to say it isn't of the same quality though (hopefully!)

Yeah, good luck with Winamp, I think we're all rooting for you on that one Smile

It is the browser function in XYplorer it self !

It is using IExplore.exe. When you click on a link, it will make contact with the internet and leave you the traces just like IExplorer.exe does.

By the way didn't you say before, that you know a bit about c++ programing (maybe it wasn't you)
Cause the only way to solve this issue is by coding something called an api-hook ( JauntPE )

There seem to be quite a few of the freeware test release which have this behaviour, we have to find a way to deal with it !

[edit] Did you try the new Winamp development test 3 ?

Previewed Formats

OK, got you, I thought you were referring to the Temporary Internet File you posted above. You're referring to the 'Previewed Formats/.url' in the Configuration box. Yes, you're right, it uses IE. I'd forgotten about that because I turned it off years ago!

I have no soluton to redirecting these sort of things I'm afraid. I guess uploading a Dev Test 3 with a custom INI disabling it and adding file associations for Firefox Portable is as far as I'm going to go. Sorry to disappoint you but it's not me you're thinking about, as you've probably realised by now LOL. And apologies if I completely missed the point of your post.

Regarding Winamp DT3. I haven't tried it yet as I don't have a 'sandbox' type environment to run it in (as recommended, I believe). When it gets a bit further down the line I'll no doubt be giving it a go Smile

Winamp DT3 has been a download-installer for the past 3 weeks !

Make sure you have 7-ZipPortable installed in the portable apps folder, the installer needs it to extract the files !
Have had 1 complain about it 3 weeks ago, for 150 downloads. So I expect it's working fine for most people.

[edit] Seen your new update. So, you are going for an official release ?

DT3

In DT3, I've only disabled the URLs from previewing, the info panel is otherwise fully functional. I added the Firefox Portable file associations as a demo. As I said, I don't use them but they're tested and working.

I doubt an old, abandoned version like this will ever get anywhere near the official release page, and I'm not going for anything, but perhaps some people might still enjoy using it.

Hi prapper,

Could you make this to update a drive-letter.

The problem is that whenever XYplorer has a certain folder open and I switch PC, XYplorer doesn't find the folder it used to be showing. I expect due to the drive-letter change.

Yes I know, explaining is not my biggest talent !

It's not a major issue, but would improve functionality a lot.

Hi Gringoloco

Hmm... the code is in there and I just did a fresh install then changed the drive letter and it's working here (for the drive it's installed on).

You haven't got "XYplorerFree.ini" in both the app and the settings directory somehow have you (so it won't be moving)? This is generally what causes this sort of problem.

That was the problem.

I have to do some testing on this myself, cause what I believe what went wrong is that I used my XYplorerPortable and XYplorerFreePortable at the same time, by accident. It also messed up my file associations. but this explains a lot !

Just didn't find any time to have a closer look at it.

Did you consider using MoveFiles.nsh, for moving the files back and forward.
It would solve the problem from happening again or to others !

[Edit: Have a look how the uTorrent Portable launcher deals with this,
The settings get copied to the program folder at startup, so they would allways stay in the settings folder aswell for the PAM backup option. As long as the files to be copied at startup aren't extremely big, it should work fine. Then at exit, they get moved back by force. The only downside is, if ever the launcher gets terminated before it could move them back, the user would (just) loose the modifications made by the user at this last run.]

MoveFiles

Yes, that would seem like a more sensible solution. I've seen the uTorrent launcher but the only other official one I can find that uses it is Notepad++ (which also still uses Rename for the most part). So I wonder what the possible drawbacks are (if any)?

On another note, when I was testing the drive switching yesterday, I found that a clean install would cause the +/- icons in the directory tree to disappear. Is that happening with you too? I think it's due to the default INI file I've supplied (I don't remember it happening when I tested initially though) but XYplorer definitely likes to write it's own INI from scratch. So if anyone is having that problem, the solution is to remove "XYplorerFree.ini" and let it create a fresh one.

Perhaps I'll do another dev test and try and have a crack at both of these issues. Thanks for the suggestions.

Have the same fresh install problem !

First of all, I wonder what it needs all the default settings for, in XYplorerFree.ini ???

There are just so many, and lots of them even are empty (????= ).

Anyway, I had ago at comparing them to the working .ini file. And changed some settings and XYplorer worked fine again. Then I made the same modification to the default ini. But this messed up XYplorer even more. (got a black window, where the files should be). It is just odd behaviour !

The best I could is just delete the default ini, as the launcher writes the necessary entries anyway (NoPrevHTML & FileAssoc). And it works again !

So what does it need the default ini for, anyway ???

I had a look at NotePad++ Portable, it seems every odd script and I wondered who wrote it. But it is one of John's (should be ok then). But I assumed utorrent Portable did it the way it did, so if you would do a PAM backup while the launcher is running, the settings would still be in the Data\settings folder. If they wouldn't be the portable apps settings would be missed and the user assumes he backed them up (but did not !!!).

Did you get that ? (Hmm, explaining again)

Got It

It needs the default INI because 'NoPrevHTML' has to be (and is only) written on first run, but if XYp finds a file with *only* those entries, it messes up. As it needs to see a more complete INI, I thought including just the first two sections was keeping it happy. But I was wrong! Anyway, I've got it sorted (hopefully).

I'll have a look at MoveFiles.nsh and maybe put it in later.

Re: Notepad++. I always thought it was a requirement of the PA.c Backup to close all apps first but I could be wrong on that.

Works fine now !

But, shouldn't the settings be set by the launcher, in the following way:

[Settings]
NoPrevHTML=.htm.html.url.
[FileAssoc]
Count=3
1=+url>..\..\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\FirefoxPortable.exe
2=+html>..\..\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\FirefoxPortable.exe
3=+htm>..\..\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\FirefoxPortable.exe

I did some small test on the backup function of PAM 2.0 beta3, and it just backs-up all data, even if apps are running. Notepad++Portable will just not be backed-up, if it would be running during backup. Probably I should report this to John!

default INI

I included the full default INI in DT4 didn't I? (yes, it is a right PITA!)

You mean setting the associations with relative paths? I thought using "?" as the root of the drive was safer in case XYp was installed somewhere else. No accounting for people's tastes in directory structure! Dev test 5 is already underway and I decided to do it like this -

1++htm;html;url>?:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\FirefoxPortable.exe

And also to check for Firefox first then ask to add them. Leave it up to the user.

Yeah, I forgot to take .htm and .html out of the previewed formats didn't I! Do you think there are any more dodgy ones in there? I was a bit concerned about the Audio & Video ones as they use WMP but I can't get it to leave any tracks so I guess they're OK. What do you think?

Notepad++. Yeah, you're talking to the wrong person about that Smile

And what if FFP is installed

And what if FFP is installed in a different folder.
I think we could assume that users install all their portableapps in the same main portable folder.
So using the following:

..\..\..\FirefoxPortable\FirefoxPortable.exe

(sorry my mistake, I think I didn't get this last line right, in the last reply!)
Using the above relative link should do the job, no matter in what location is the users main portable folder !

About WMP, I do not have experience with it giving problems. But you could do a test on it.

Yes, of course, you're right, I'll change it. And I can't get any of the other previewed formats (that I can test) to leave any tracks either so I'll leave everything in except for HTM, HTML & URL.

XYplorerFree 13.60 released

Hi Prapper,
Wanted to let you know that there is a new version of XYplorerFree (v13.60) now at http://www.xyplorer.com/free.php
I hope you will be able to develop a portableapps wrapper for this.

Best,

Hi Prapper,

XYplorerFreePortable is, especially lately, crashing or getting stuck for a few minutes, whenever I delete files from my local HDD.
I am wondering if you experience the same problem ?
Please don't tell me my HDD is giving up on me....:-(

Hi there

That doesn't sound too good Sad Although I can't say that I'm having any similar problems. It's running all day, every day here, too. Still on XP though.

Hope the HDD is ok...

I know it's a longshot, but

I know it's a longshot, but any chance you could provide an updated version of XYplorerFreePortable? Thanks for what you did already. I've been using it for many years.
