1.18.11 Dev Test 1 (2013-06-12):
- NirLauncher updated to 1.18.11.
- The 64-bit apps are now in a separate folder. I don't have a 64-bit system to test them on so I'm making an "educated" (!) guess as to how the config files are being handled ie: I'm moving them from "Data\nirsoft\x64" to "App\NirLauncher\NirSoft\x64" & back again with any paths replaced. I'm also assuming they're named the same as the app they relate to. If this is wrong, please let me know.
- Upgrade is automatic but, because of the above, I advise you to make a safety copy of your Data folder before installing this version.

2009-11-05 - 2010-02-26:
- Blah, blah, blah.
- This won't start if you have any of these utilities running locally.
- Extra packages (Sysinternals etc.) not supported (see next item).
You can close NirLauncher & leave the apps running but you'll notice increased cpu activity as NirLauncher Portable checks/waits for over 200 apps. All the other stuff is still at SourceForge if you want it.
Tested with:
XP Home SP3 (Admin), 7 Professional SP1 64-bit (Admin)
These are really useful. You might want to check out the Nirsoft Launcher. It provides a GUI and nearly all the utilities in one package.
Yeah, I've been looking at that. I prefer them as separate apps, I have to say, but it does have it's advantages (easier to run with command line options, instead of editing an INI, for one). From what I can see though, he's planning on integrating the Sysinternals stuff into it. Even ignoring the EULAs, some of those things are definitely not portable, especially by this site's standards. The only thing it won't do is the drive switching (which the ones above will) but not many of them need it.
Thanks for testing BTW, some more coming soon
From what I've read and using it, the user has to manually add the Sysinternals stuff. The launcher is just set up to integrate them. This is a user option, so it wouldn't be forced upon the user and then there wouldn't be a problem with portability. I think it might be beneficial to take a look at the launcher and see how much work it would actually be.
The NirSoft launcher is easy to put into the PA.c Format. As everything is in same directory, it's just a mass move of the CFG files back out to Data\settings. There's just the question of which of those files to do the 'adjust drives' on. Are you familiar enough with them to list them out? Is the official launcher something you'd prefer in PAF?
Unfortunately I haven't looked into the cfg files. Maybe that's something I could help you out with. I think the official launcher would be a great thing.
There is one thing I did that might be nice to have but could be hard to implement. I put each program in its own folder and adjusted the ini for the launcher. All the cfg files remain in the folder where the program is located. This just may be my OCD, but I find the folder structure easier to work with.
The config files have the same root name as the utility, they have a .cfg extension, and they live in the same directory as the utility.
If there isn't one, the program starts fine, uses default settings and then creates the config file upon quitting. A user can return any of the programs to default by deleting the .cfg before running the program again.
After looking at several, they appear to be drive and directory neutral (they don't mention anything either way).
There might be some that don't fit this pattern. He does say (and I've seen) that some older ones use the registry. Evidently, just like any other programmer, he has developed the way he does things, and as he turns his attention to a particular utility, it gets updated with all the latest routines. So some of them might still be back in the horse-and-buggy days instead of the automobile.
neutron1132 (at) usa (dot) com
If you've got all the programs configured and pointing to where they should, you could just search the CFG files for text containing ":\". SearchMyFiles is great for this
Not impossible with some (a lot!) of post install code but, as the directory structure of the app changed between beta 1 and 2, perhaps it'll change again so it might be better to wait until it looks settled before attempting to manipulate it. If at all.
I'm with you on that one (I mean that I am a fellow sufferer!)
Did I not read that he'd left those out of the Launcher for that reason?
Yes, he says he has an age limit for his automatic program to gather up the individual utilities to make the package.
He was explaining why some utilities don't appear in the package.
neutron1132 (at) usa (dot) com
Right, I forgot he had an updater in there too. I haven't tried that yet. That would probably mean no messing with the directory structure then.
See release notes.
Uploaded the NirSoft Launcher. The only apps that have drive switching are the two above that need it (FavoritesView and PasswordFox) and, as with the standalones, they're configured to find your Firefox Portable if it's in the default directory.
If you find any others, post them here and I'll update it.
I checked the Nirsoft Nirblog dated 11/15/09 and it listed 9 "Utilities updates in the last week". I checked 3 of them ShellExView, USBDeview and MyUninstaller after installing NirLauncher today, and all were the older versions. I did not check the other 6 utilities but I do not believe they were updated as well.
M Weisberg
I hadn't looked into the NirSoft Launcher update process but, in trying to answer your question, I just gave it a go.
Am I just missing something here? How on earth does it do this? Or was I dreaming?
I'm guessing that if you just installed NirLauncher Portable and it downloaded the ZIP file, if the updated versions are not in there, then there's nothing I can do here. It's up to him to put the updates in the download.
If you run the standalone installers again, they'll download the latest ones. I know MyUninstaller isn't here yet. I'll upload the latest NirSoft updates next week. They're sitting here ready to go.
See release notes.
See release notes.
I did a bit of poking around to check the apparent discrepancy of getting older versions of utilities.
It seems that the download package isn't dynamic. He's made one big ZIP and when you go there, you get that one and it is stuck at whatever versions were current on that date.
So, the idea that it would be a dynamic package is probably still in the works (same as PA.com).
Also, the idea of having the launcher run an update check for included packages is still in the works (same as PA.com).
For those who must stay on the bleeding edge, Nir maintains a feed and blog page for updates/releases. Any program listed as updated since the last launcher beta release probably needs to be manually updated to stay on the bleeding edge (as of today there are 10 updates). Here's the applicable page for anybody so inclined:
http://feeds.feedburner.com/nirsoft/voiG
I should note that most of the updates to his utilities are fairly minor and nobody needs to rush right out there, except of course those who feel the NEED to be current at all times (for whatever reason).
In the blog he also gives directions on how to include the SysInternals package of utilities into the NirLauncher. Things have changed a bit from the original directions, but I am going to clean it up and incorporate the how-to changes as I do it on my own machine. If there is interest here, I'd be happy to post the directions including the appropriate links.

Sounds good, go for it.
Thanks for looking into the auto update situation. I guess the best way to keep them updated at the moment is to run the standalone installers again (I keep mine in the relevant app's root directory).
I still haven't weeded out the portable from the 'almost portable' (as it's defined here) in the NirLauncher so I'm afraid the package here is what it is (apart from the couple of apps mentioned in the OP). Bug reports welcome!
I'm subscribed to that feed and am taking it as my cue to 'paf' whatever gets updated. Sadly enough LOL.
You seem to be getting pretty good at it!
I've noticed that there's a couple of individual apps that should also have the 64bit version, but unfortunately the NirSoft filename is the same as the 32bit one (doesn't end in "-x64" like the rest) so the system doesn't handle it. I downloaded the 64bit version, named it properly, and put it with the rest of the utilities. I'll try to get better at documenting these things.
When I get the Sysinternals thing ready, I'll post it into this thread.
neutron1132 (at) usa (dot) com
The following is basically quoted from the NirSoft blog, with minor changes to clarify the steps and links. I have tested these installation steps.
NirLauncher allows you to add additional software packages. Just for example, here's how to add Sysinternals Suite into NirLauncher:

Very useful info there
Having the Sysinternals Suite easily accessible is pretty neat.
ProduKey was just updated, you're quick!
BTW, ProduKey is one of the utilities where the 64bit version isn't named into his conventional pattern.
Since the 32 and 64 versions are both named "ProduKey.exe", you can't have both installed. This is how it should look:
And the ProduKey.cfg (which appears after the program is run the first time).
The trick is to rename the ProduKey.exe (64 version) to ProduKey-x64.exe before sticking it into the NirSoft directory.

See release notes.
WSCC?
Its similar to what you do. Its a suite with all nirsoft and sysinternal utilities.
The best thing is a built in update manager which checks the authors pages for updates.
They even advertise a fully portable paf.exe installer!
(They have a normal and U3 download too but who cares about them? :P)

Any idea where they store the apps? I can't seem to find them.

a new thread about this - I`ll answer it there. Hijacking is mean.

Can you add MozillaHistoryView so you can complete the mozilla utility package?

There you go.
This will work perfectly with portable firefox.

NirLauncher has been updated to Beta 3.
May the Shwartz be with you
I dont have time to make launchers or anything like that, but using a nifty little tool to crawl the nirsoft website, i was able to download every single zip file, meaning i have all of the applications as their zips, including a majority of the translations, and plugins for Volumouse

Is anyone else having issues switching back to NirSoft Utilities after installing the SysInternal pack using the .nlp offered on the Nirsoft blog?
PortableApps.com Advocate
No problem here.
The easiest way to switch between the NirSoft and the SysInternals is to click the green up/down arrows on the bottom right border of the NirSoft launcher window.
I've switched back and forth, over and over again, with no apparent glitches.
What kind of problems are you having?
neutron1132 (at) usa (dot) com
I was having trouble switching back from SysInternals to Nirsoft using F3 earlier. Instead of switching from Nirsoft to SysInternal utilities the app was just switching between the different SysInternal tool sets, eg. PS Tools to Other Console Tools to GUI Tools and back again.
Not sure what the cause was but just reinstalled from scratch and now is working without issue. It's quite probable it was human error on my behalf but I'm going to cite the beta label
PortableApps.com Advocate
Could be the beta thing, but I'm always suspicious of apps that take the primary Windows-based function keys. F3 should be "repeat" and has been since DOS days.
Along the same line, F5 had always been "refresh" but someone (probably Microsoft) decided that Ctrl-R was the thing to do. Now it gets hard to remember which program does things the old way or the new way.

My posts are old and likely no longer relevant.
In the NirLauncher installer, it cannot download the zip because in installer.ini the download url text does not have a .zip extension.

Thanks for letting me know, I must have forgotten to test that one
If you're still doing these, could you package IconsExtract, please?
Yeah, still looking at these, lots of new ones to do so I'll stick IconsExtract in there too.
I've found it rather useful for packaging apps that don't really have a decent icon lying around anywhere else.
I installed the Nirsoft launcher and have been trying out some of the utilites. When trying to update some of the utilities Zone Alarm Pro stopped access to the site (unless I over-rode it) and stated that this site is a known distributor or spyware.
Anyone know about this?
Have a look at this:

If you're still worried though, you could try following the advice given here on PortableApps:

I think that there is an issue here that needs to be fixed.
The application is designed to sniff passwords on your network. That is what it says it does, that is what it actually does.
Unsurprisingly, most apps that do this are trojans or spyware - the key and critical difference here is that you, as the operator of the computer, are specifically choosing to run it.
Many AV companies have created a new category for this class of application - "Hacker Tools" or "Potentially Unwanted Applications" - which makes it clearer, in less inflammatory language, what they are.
If you don't want a password sniffer on your PC, don't install it, but if you do want one, then you're going to have to accept that your anti-malware tools are going to think that it is malware - since basically they cannot know whether it was you that installed it or someone without your permission.
NirLauncher has been updated to 1.10. It's probably worth updating the portable version.
currPort is so great, i see never a better tool for looking conections, and is very smal
hope this tool be in nearly time relassed as offical PA app. i find only one little bug, but is a bug i the toll self, the "about" window can only be closed over clicking on "ok", the window button X not works.

No problem.
Country IP: Used for the "IP Country" column in CurrPorts & SmartSniff.
IEEE: Used for the "Company Name" column in BluetoothView & WirelessNetView.
USB ID: Used for the "Vendor Name" & "Product Name" columns in USBDeview.

"You can close NirLauncher and leave the apps running but you'll notice increased cpu activity as NirLauncher Portable checks/waits for over 200 apps."
You should try and do something about this. I tried the following code for Google Chrome and it ended up being incompatible but it would work nicely for you:
http://nsis.sourceforge.net/ExecWait_and_waiting_for_child_processes_wit...
Basically this will wait until the process you started AND EVERY DESCENDANT PROCESS IT EVER LAUNCHES exits. Extremely useful for Portable App launchers imo.
It should be low on CPU since the GetQueuedCompletionStatus call is passed with an INFINITE timeout so Windows itself handles the waiting and checking for you. Not sure why there's a loop there (that's another fix you can make by removing it).
You may need to fix some bugs, I thought I submitted a fix but I don't see it so it might have been undone. The most critical fix was that you should StrCpy _exec to a numbered variable and use that in the system call instead of directly inserting the string (which can easily confuse system::call if it is a complex string).
Signature automatically removed for being too awesome.
Thanks for the info, I'll try & get this in soon.

when updating it never seems to keep my settings.
Do you mean just the settings for NirLauncher or for all the apps? Are the files still actually there at Data\nirsoft? You should get asked whether you want to reset your config at the end of an upgrade (I might change this soon), the default answer being 'no'. Is this happening? More info please.
running in Vista and its for all settings, i see the config files in Data\nirsoft but they are not the same.
when it asks me to reset configurations i check No but it still resets them
now it doesn't seem to save individual application configuration settings(EXE file path) at all when just starting the program again, the data\nirsoft files are in there but they dont seem to be writing the user specified settings
Not sure I'm following you to be honest so the easiest thing to do would be to rename your main NirLauncherPortable folder & then do a fresh install, make sure everything works, reinstall ('upgrade') then check again. You can copy any app configs over from the old version if it's all OK. Let me know how you get on.
Failing that, if you want to zip it all up & give me a link I'll take a look.
