Portable AbiWord is now AbiWord Portable, and version 2.4.5 has been released as a multilingual package. For the unfamiliar, AbiWord Portable is the lightweight AbiWord word processor packaged with a PortableApps.com Launcher as a portable app, so you can take your word processor and documents with you. This new release adds in several new features, including: the ability to run from a CD, in-place upgrades, full support for AbiWord plugins, Open Document support and more. Portable AbiWord becomes AbiWord Portable
The first thing you'll notice is that the name has been changed from Portable AbiWord to AbiWord Portable. Why the name change? The new names are designed to put the base application names first. All of the apps here at PortableApps.com are being renamed in this fashion over the next week. This makes it easier to sort and use your apps, too.
What's New?
So, what's new? Quite a few things:
Live/CD Support - AbiWord Portable supports running from a CD or other read-only media right out of the box, making it even easier to carry with you and use on other systems. Full details are in the support topic on Running from a CD.
In-Place Upgrades - AbiWord Portable now supports the ability to do what we're calling an "in-place upgrade". This means that you can extract it right over an existing installation of AbiWord Portable without losing any of your settings and it'll Just Work. This will apply to future releases of AbiWord Portable as you'll still need to manually update due to the directory changes.
Plugin Support - AbiWord Portable now supports the standard AbiWord import/export and tools plugins right out of the box. Full details are in the support topic on Adding Plugins to AbiWord Portable.
Remove OpenDocument / Save Space
Even though AbiWord Portable is no longer available without the OpenDocument plugin as a separate download, you can easily remove the plugin if you don't need it or space is at a premium and you'd like to save 2.2MB. Just get the OpenDocument Plugin Remover.

how is it better than just using portable open office?
Smaller and Faster
AbiWord is much smaller and faster than OpenOffice.org. So, it's great for smaller drives. Or for firing up when you just need to quickly mess with a DOC file. Also, some random Word documents will read better in AbiWord than OO Write. Of course, AbiWord doesn't have the full feature set of OpenOffice.org, but for most stuff, it's great.

Can you write programs with Abiword? Meaning, is there syntax highlighting and auto-indention, collapse sections of code, code snippit toolbars or auto-completion of common words?
I doubt it since I didn't see anything on the Abiword site, so then what would be a good portable app to do this. I'm wanting to learn some programming, but I might be on a home PC, my g/f's PC, a lab PC, wherever. I'd like to have the same code editor available everywhere. I have Linux LiveCDs, but in several of the above locations, I can't be seen with a non-standard environment. I'd like an editor that I can install on Ubuntu/Debian as well as have portable to use in Windows. Maybe NEdit, not sure.
I will be doing assembly, Python, Java, C, C++ and maybe VB. At work we have Textpad, but not on all PCs and its not free. Notetab Light looks OK, but seems to target HTML editing.
