Hi all,
I just installed the PortableApps package on my USB stick. All programs run as advertised except Firefox (3.5.5). It fails to load any pages. Chrome works fine from my stick, and connectivity from my work PC running IE is fine.
I guess it's a bad install?
Advice appreciated.

most likely its a bad install or maybe a file system error.
Try reinstalling Firefox Portable (your settings will be preserved) and checking your drive for errors.

Did a fresh install. The new install also fails to load. FF error message as follows:

you are having a problem with a rss-feed not being valid (that's what I think after reading some google search results).
Maybe your profile is corrupt. What happens if you delete the file in question?

I deleted the file in question. When I then started FF, I got a fail to load any pages, and the error message was the same as above, but referred to a different javascript file. I deleted that one (!) and then got the same fail and error message referring to yet another .js file.
I have now updated Java runtime environment on my workstation (C: drive), and done a fresh install of FF on my USB stick, but the result is the same as above, with error message referring to the first .js file.
Did the updating of Java on my C: drive have any effect on loading FF from my stick?
FYI: I download and install FF directly on the stick, bypassing the C: drive.
Fortunately Chrome is doing the job, but still ...

Sounds like a proxy issue. Chrome uses IE's settings, which explains why that browser works and Firefox does not. (Actually, Chrome doesn't work for me at work, but that's beside the point.)
What you need to do is relatively simple. Go into Control Panel, then Internet Options (also Tools>Internet Options in IE), go to the Connections tab, click on LAN settings, and copy the proxy URL in the Address field under Proxy Settings. (This is IE 6, it may be a little different in IE 7 or 8.) Also note the port number.
Now go into Firefox, go to Tools, then Options, click on the Advanced tab, then the Network sub-tab, click on Settings in the upper-right corner, then paste the address into the HTTP Proxy field. Fill in the port number as well, then click the box that says "Use this proxy server for all protocols". You should be good to go.
If you need to quickly turn the proxy on and off, I recommend the extension QuickProxy. Yeah, FoxyProxy has a LOT more options, but it's more for anonymizing proxies, I think. QP just gives you a neat little toggle button.
