OpenOffice 3.1 Writer (and more) does not start from USB stick

Hi there,

something strange happens: on a usb stick of a friend of mine, OpenOffice 3.1 Writer does not start. Even Calc doesn't do so.

There is no splash screen. The only thing you see is in the task manager. There I can see the two processes "soffice.bin" and "soffice.exe", but after a few seconds, they both disappear.

Is there some sort of log file, where I could check, what went wrong? Are there maybe some known incompatibilities, I should have a look for?

The same thing applied for the previous version 3.0.1. My first thought was: oh, the usb stick could have a problem, so re-install the old version - no change in behaviour. After that, I changed to 3.1, but again, the software won't start.

Any help is appreciated. Where should I look for? What information do you need in addition?

Install path

Where are you installing to? A good check to start with is to make sure that you haven't installed it any deeper than F:\PortableApps\OpenOfficePortable - just about any longer and it won't work due to path length problems.

As far as I remember, i didn't install it any deeper. And I'm quite sure about that, but just to be 100% sure, I have to check this out. I'll call my friend so he can check that and tell me...

Okay, I checked it: it was not installed any deeper than F:\PortableApps\OpenOfficePortable.

I told my friend to test it with the same stick on another computer. Maybe there is something on his laptop, which prevents OpenOffice from working there.

Feedback poll?

I noticed something similar when I tried OO Portable on a different computer. It tried to pop open window asking if I wanted to take a feedback poll. I only learned that later, though. Smile I wondered why it wasn't opening, then went into the processes and killed whatever was OO related. Next time, it fired up and showed me the poll, I closed it, and it didn't happen any more.

I'm having the same problem

Already reinstalled a few times, the standard path, and the problem is recurring. I use Windows Vista Home Premium SP2. The problem may be Vista? I have OO installed on the HD and it works perfectly. It is an inestimable loss for me to be without OOportable. I cheer for someone to find a solution. Now, neither the old version is working.

Local

First reinstall. Delete your existing X:\PortableApps\OpenOfficePortable directory and install a fresh copy. Be sure to check your drive for errors, too. If that fails...

Install OO.o Portable locally (to C:\PortableApps\OpenOfficePortable). If that works, it's either your drive or USB ports. If it fails, then something else is up with your PC.

I tried everything:

I tried: reinstall OO with installation java PortableApps, uninstall java PortableApps and reinstall oo (using the java hd), verification of virus (Mcaffee and Avast), chkdsk/f (DOS) in my pendrive found no problems, performed self-diagnosis on my Dell computer (Inspiron) and did not accuse any problem (mem - ok; USB ports - OK, etc.. - no hardware problem), my Vista is unique and is updating normally.

All the programs on my pendrive function normally, many of PortableApps (Firefox, Thunderbird, ...). Only the OO is in trouble (he even carries, but after a long time - in the task manager show the soffice.bin and soffice.exe loading slowly).

I'll try to see how it behaves on another PC / operating system. I regret not being able to use OO PortableApps in the computer in use. I just wanted to know what really happened.

* i use OO Portuguese-BR version (BROffice Portable).

---> I installed the version Portuguese-PT and the problem persisted. Soon after installation, everything works perfectly. Restart the computer and the problem returns.

Resolved

After the Microsoft support simply answer that it was not their problem because it did not develop the software, I read again the posts of our discussion in Forum PortableApps and decided to install in a directory named only as X:\OO

I do not know if varies from PC to PC, but do not know why my PC has changed its behavior, but the fact is that the default installation apparently caused the problem. I think your directory has the size too big.

Now, I want to know how to use JavaPortable with OOo installed in the directory X:\OO. If possible, in which directory should I install JavaPortable to be detected by OOo?

Best regards.
