I've just posted a pre-release of SciTE Portable 1.7.0 and need some folks to test it out. For the unfamiliar, SciTE is a very customizable text editor that's very handy for developers. This release has many of the features of the other new apps, too:
Live CD & Read-Only USB Support - SciTE Portable fully supports running from a CD or from a USB flash drive set to read-only mode. For CD use, just burn a copy once you've run it and configured it to your liking.
In-Place Upgrades - SciTE Portable supports the ability to do what I'm calling an "in-place upgrade". This means that you can extract it right over an existing installation of SciTE Portable without losing any of your existing data and it'll Just Work (tm). Note, however, that if you make any advanced changes to the properties files other than SciTEUser.properties, you'll need to manually back those up before upgrading.
WINE Support - The new launcher has been written and tested to work with Wine within your favorite UNIX/Linux distro. You can install, configure and use SciTE Portable within Wine without issue.
SciTE Config Changes - I've changed the standard set of SciTE options a bit. Enabling line numbers and line background highlights, enabling the toolbar/status, NSIS support enabled, status bar layout changed to include all necessary details in a single pane, etc. If you like em, you can grab the SciTEUser.properties file and use it with your local copy of SciTE. If you don't, you can copy your version of that file from your local copy to SciTEPortable\Data\settings.

Thanks,
John
Seems to work just fine from what testing I did on it. I don't like SciTE, so I didn't put much time into it, but it doesn't appear to have left anything behind on my system. That's good enough for me.

and it worked fine for the file types I use. Did not try from read only media.

Any chance of a 'Portable' Notepad++. I know it's already portable, but I like having the directory structure.

I think Notepad2 Portable would be a better option. Notepad2, IMO, is superior to Notepad++. I'm pretty sure that, even though it's freeware (not open-source), the creator's terms would allow it. At least, from what I remember.

Notepad2 also uses the Scintilla engine internally, as with SciTE and Notepad++, thus it's also GPLed. Unfortunately, it uses the registry by default with no option to prevent that. And it doesn't have tabs (I like tabs). It's also not as flexible or expandable as Notepad++ (or SciTE)... it doesn't support plugins, apis (which allow you to have auto-complete for vb, python, ruby, c, etc), additional languages definition files, etc. And, it looks like Notepad2 development has basically stopped... whereas SciTE and Notepad++ are actively developed and have solid user and developer communities around them.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Can you make it enable line numbers on default? Having the check the option myself is quite annoying each time I use SciTE
They are enabled by default in the portable version.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Hm...I'm going to redownload, because mine wasn't.
I figured it out: When you have the file structure as "\PortableApps\SciTEPortable\" the default settings aren't used. I put my SciTEPortable.exe outside of PortableApps and it doesn't work.
Yeah, it's a bug with the current launcher.
Keep in mind that I may be dropping SciTE Portable in favor of Notepad++ Portable.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Well right now I don't like how it automatically indents on the next line if I declare a variable like "public int width". But since you said that Notepad++ also uses the Scintilla editing component, I doubt that that issue would be fixed.
Do it, Do it lol
I'm a huge fan of Notepad++, I'd much rather see that with your directory structure
Or Since this one is almost finished, just release both so some people can have variety
The developer formerly known as ZGitRDun8705
It has everything that I need. I think it works great
Thanks.
Keep up the great work! I'm sure SciTE users will love this. I played around with it for a while and found that it left no traces behind. Any chance we'll get to see an official Notepad++ Portable release any time soon?
No Problems found here
Couldn't get it to compile and run java files
can anyone help me here
When is it going to become a normal App?
People prefer Notepad++ better by the looks of it.

Many people prefer Notepad++ over SciTE. IMHO the latter is a LOT more customisable. Prove me wrong, please.
is/was a discussion on that somewhere.

The best thing about SciTE is that it allows you to compile files unlike notepad ++ so SciTE is a IDE while notepad++ is just a enhanced text editor.
Though SciTE can compile, I can't figure out how to compile java files, can anybody help?

The best things in life are free...and portable.
All seems OK although I have not done anything extensive as I prefer Notepad++ (which is inherantly portable).
Hi,
works fine for me, can you give us any hint what could be particularly bugg?
I was about to suggest the package but did the obvious check and found that you had done it already. Thanks again for all the help in your work. I will be using the package fairly regularly so I will report back with issues if any. The version that I am currently using is a windows install from the scite web site that includes support for PHP which is my main target language that I need a text editor for.
I absolutely love SciTE. I have been using it portable for a while (just putting all the files in the USB drive).
The portable installer seems to work fine except when you invert colours. I have an application that inverts all the colours but it makes the colours for sciteportable go all weird. In particular the selection colors. I also can't get the current line (caret line) to behave properly with the inverted colors.
However, I am still trying to determine if this is a portable SciTE problem or a SciTE 1.7.0 as I am used to 1.6.8 and will have to furter test and investigate the colour inverter on 1.7.0.
I tried the new Text Editor. I think its a wonderful piece of programming as I study java and this will be very useful for my course. If is farly difficult to set the compile path.
It did't work with japanese.
So, I googled, and find some japanese site about SciTE.
http://h12u.com/scixx/about162plusjpn.html
http://blog.ekndesign.com/archives/000141.html
Open menu-option-OpenGlobal Option
change line 210&211 to:
code.page=932
character.set=128 (erace"#")
and change line 214 to:
#code.page=0 (add"#")
So, SciTE Portable work with japanese letter.
And I tried to chenge menu bar japanese.
Visit a site: http://h12u.com/scixx/index.html
and get "Scintilla162plusJpn.zip"
Open the extracted folder "scixx162p".
Open "jalocale", and find "locale.properties".
Copy the file and Paste to:
SciTE Portable/Data/settings
Start SciTEPortable, I found japanaized tool bar there.
And I found that this text editor is for programmer.
Oh, No. I'm not a programmer!
I don't know about any PC programs!
I introduce japanese famous free text editors:
TeraPad : http://www5f.biglobe.ne.jp/~t-susumu/library/tpad.html
BigEditor : http://homepage2.nifty.com/mrbig/index.html
Mana2 : http://mana.ikuto.com/
MKEditor : http://www.mk-square.com/
Allmost these user in japan are run them from their PC.
But I know that they can run from USB memory device.
I'm sorry. I can not use english so much.
But I always introduce Portable Application to japanese people.
My blog site is here. (Only Japanese. I'm sorry.)

I love PORTABLE APP for long time.
Well I like how it groups html code so I know where it begins and ends... but other than that... I do not find it that useful...but it is very nice... but it is just not for me...
How would I go about setting the compile path for Java. I don't think the properties panel is user friendly whereby you have to go and search for the entries you want by editing it.
Thanks for this, it works as well as it normally does on the computer. I love scite.
I really like this thing. Just saw the need for testers on the website, and wanted to help. My college's computer lab is really good for that, since we have no permission to write practically anywhere on the system's folders. SciTE is good, though I never tried Notepad++ or Notepad2. I used to use ConText.

It works nicely for me. Please put this up as offical app, as it's really good.
I downloaded it. It got to 58% installed and said this:
F:\System\src\utils\editors\SciTE_Portable_1.70_en-us_PRERELEASE.exe
Data error in 'SciTEPortable\App\wscite\SciLexer.dll'. File is broken
Data error in 'SciTEPortable\App\wscite\SciTE.exe'. File is broken
Data error in 'SciTEPortable\ScitePortable.exe'. File is broken
NOW,
I have had problems with a bad web connection corrupting downloaded files before, so it could just be my connection screwing my file over.

It's on the same server as this site, so if you can view this, it should be fine, unless John has screwed up.

I've had this problem for a while with many programs. I just posted in case it was a known issue

Hi, I like SciTE Portable a lot, and I've already modded it to be able to compile swf files :). That's the very reason I like OS Apps, modifying... But have one question. In the App/wscite directory there is a luaCOPYRIGHT file. I was confused about this, because I used a modification which included a Lua scripting extension:
http://scintilla.sourceforge.net/SciTELua.html
and it needs a licence. But does the lua.properties file need one? I'm not a lawyer, so it's just a question, because I want to continue the modifying and want to add swfmill and maybe haxe support to it. And if it works fine I could publish it. But I need to know all the license requirements.
I think SciTE Portable shouldn't be dropped, it's the most perfect program for developers. But if it gets dropped, can I keep on using the nsis launcher code without breaking the PortableApps rights? I mean may I still use the current splash screen and license?
And oh, for the testing: I've tested it on a 266MHz Intel Pentium I, with 16MB Ram, Windows 98, and it works :)!
Lua is under MIT license that couldn't be less restrictive.
As for dropping: I think too many people like it, however for John, it would be a pain to maintain 2 portable editors.
I found a way to make the NSIS compiler portable.
open up nsis.properties in data/settings or from scite. goto lines 127 and 128 and replace them with this:
command.compile.$(file.patterns.nsis)=nsis/makensis.exe "$(FilePath)"
command.build.$(file.patterns.nsis)=nsis/makensis.exe "$(FilePath)"
then copy the compiler, the stubs folder, and the contrib folder to app/wscite/NSIS.
But there’s no sense crying over every mistake,
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.
you can use another method: $(SciteDefaultHome) gives you the Data\settings directory. So, you can do the following:
command.compile.$(file.patterns.nsis)=$(SciteDefaultHome)/../nsis/makensis.exe "$(FilePath)"
command.build.$(file.patterns.nsis)=$(SciteDefaultHome)/../nsis/makensis.exe "$(FilePath)"
and copy all the files in Data/nsis. I prefer this method, 'cause the wscite directory remains clear, and it is much easier to upgrade (current SciTE release is 1.72), and all your not-standard changes, additions etc. are in your Data directory, and it can be much easier moved. And maybe there are some licensing problems if you copy another programs in your wscite directory, I don't know, ask John ;)!
I meant that for people who have nearly no technical knowhow. besides, its quick and simple.
But there’s no sense crying over every mistake,
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.
any text-editors in the pipeline?
Would be nice and handy...;)
