Just Opera

That's just Opera with opera.exe renamed to operausb.exe and a profile added (you can do the same by just copying your profile and Opera directories to your USB drive). It's not portablized other than that as Opera is pretty portable by itself. It does lose some absolute path stuff as you switch PCs.

You need a distribution license to repackage Opera and Markus (Opera@USB developer) has one. There are some other portable Opera packages floating around, but they're illegally done, as are the ones in other portable software suites.

We'll have some more information about Opera in PortableApps.com Format posted in the very near future (hopefully this month).

Sounds awesome

PA people do releases so well, all that rogue stuff floating around is always a pain and hassle to use, take flock for example, you shut down your PC while it's open and it asks you a question after reboot. I don't want portable apps asking me if I can use the registry or not, I simply want it to work and anything official I've tried always does seem to work without fuss or issue and even the mozilla apps have virtually no issues with the original updaters, except of course sometimes profiles are lost or misplaced but that (latter issue) is nothing new and is not the fault of PA.com it's simply there needs to be always portability with anything open source at the forefront of the development adgenda.

Thank you for such reliable and efficient programs.

Cool feature

That's the other killer feature "that other guy" added to the PortableApps.com Format. If you don't have admin access or there's some other problem, it asks if you want to continue or not.

It's a good idea. Puts a little more control in the hands of the user. Though the official PortableApps.com apps never even need to ask, so I wonder how valuable the feature really is.

(The other killer feature is the update check, when one of their apps starts, it polls the site to see if a newer version exists, and offers to take you to the download page.)

The Format being open source and all being fair in love, war, and open source, IMHO PortableApps.com should have adopted those features, even if a rogue developer added them.

All beside the point though. I await the Opera@PAF offering. Hopefully I can make it work with the corporate proxy (or a future Chrome) and have a faster alternative to Firefox. Firefox is still my favorite browser, but choices are always nice.

Nah

Having each individual launcher checking and throwing up connection alerts in a software firewall on every system is just messy and annoying. It's trivial to implement (about 4 lines in NSIS with inetc and logiclib), but we don't want that. We couldn't take that other guy's code anyway since he stole ours, modified it and refused to release the source.

No that's right, is that not

No that's right, is that not the point of an "update checker" or program updater or something along those lines, something like Asuite that actually knows the signatures of the files and can compare?

Although I anticipate what will happen in this area, whoever made that alternative drop in application needs to actually make it work with PA.c and that means I guess opening the source

You can't host the file here,

You can't host the file here, so you'll need to upload the PAF build somewhere else (MediaFire, SourceForge, CodePlex, and Dropbox are a few possibilities). Then, create a topic in the Beta Testing forum, following these guidelines.
(Tip: you'll probably want to get md5hash Portable so you can calculate your PAF-build's md5)

EDIT: Don't forget to include the launcher's source code! Wink
