Kingston Data Traveller Elite - launchers being lost

I have been using a selection of portable apps for some months on my Data Traveller Elite 1GB. It has been working really well.

In the past two days the Firefox and Thunderbird launchers have just disappeared. I reinistalled FF and TB and all was fine for a day. Now the launchers are again not visible at the file system level. PStart can't see the launchers either. I always eject the drive.

Has anybody seen this happen before? What is going on?

Thanks in advance.

Antivirus

It's your antivirus program. It's falsely detecting a virus and (stupidly) deleting the file without asking you. It's happened a few times this week (check the support page for a notice). Ask your AV vendor to fix their issue.

eTrust

Hi John. First let me say thank you for these wonderful portable apps. It has changed the way I work with computers. I just take my whole environment with me.

You are right! I looked at the eTrust logs and it had detected a trojan and deleted the files. Absolutely brilliant!

I'm in a corporate environment so asking for a fix is useless. I will contact eTrust directly and ask them to fix it but I am not hopeful.

I did edit the registry and excluded the USB drive from real time scanning. I hope that works. If not I won't be able to use the portable apps at work which is the whole point.

I did see on the FF support page you replied to someone else who also had the same problem with eTrust. I have tried to work with eTrust before and they just point me to the corporate IT folks who of course won't do anything.

Thanks again.

Fixed Soon

I'd guess they'd fix it soon. This affects installers like OpenOffice.org, Firefox 2.0, Winamp, Intel's C Compiler, Google Picassa, etc.

That's good news

If it affects those installers as well.

Do you mean the installers for those products or the launchers?

I have emailed to the spyware main email address at Computer Associates. I asked them to update their signatures urgently.

I will let you know if I receive a reply.

Thanks again.

Installers and Launchers

It affects the portable launchers for everything here. And it affects the actual installers for the standard programs I mentioned (if you downloaded OpenOffice.org and tried to install it on your work PC, it would say it had a virus).

eTrust excluding directory does not work

I re-installed portable FF on the USB and saw eTrust deleting the launcher!

So the directory exclusion does not work. It could be that there are other reg entries that I would need to change. A lot of options are disabled by design on the standard corporate image.

So until CA fixes their problem this will not work. Unfortunate.

I will send another email to CA pointing out that the installers for those apps also are falsely detected as trojans.

Thanks John.
