Not allowed to write to the registry

I run Windows 7. Some of my apps report "You are not allowed to write to the registry!! Continue anyway". What is your solution to that? Just to add xp compatibility to the app or run as administrator?

please show us witch apps, in

please show us witch apps, in the portable apps definition is stated:A portable app doesn't leave registry entries behind except those automatically generated by Windows
so if it is a portable app from this website, report it.
if its not a portable app and just a normal app from you you should run it as an administrator

While running

Some of our applications do use the registry while running, and so the launcher just backs up before, puts the data in, and restores it afterwards. The issue here is with limited accounts. Running as administrator will fix it, but as I understood it a normal limited account should work as well in Windows 7 - though if it's a more locked-down one such as may often be encountered in schools or places like that, it won't work. All it tends to mean is that you won't get the application's portable settings: nothing will be changed on the host machine, but you won't get your portable settings on that particular machine, but instead the stock standard settings (all programs using the registry should have a fail-safe built into them so that they'll work even if they can't write to the registry).

Even guest accounts can read and write the HKCU registry. The only reason you couldn't is if the policy forbids it (on very locked down corporate PCs).

I think GnuCash requires admin access to use the bank sync stuff but works fine without it.

not

from our apps, there is no legal adobe photoshop portable cs5 as it is a commercial program, I suggest you might want to ask whoever you got it from.

Illegal site

The TC is reporting behavior found in the modified PortableApps.com Format as used by the illegal site impersonating this one.

Those apps will behave the same regardless of OS compatibility. The issue is with UAC as present in Vista and Win7. Either you run them as an admin and they work as expected, or you run them in a limited fashion and there's a couple things they can't do (e.g. save in certain folders).

Oh

So I guess they're not compiling with NSIS 2.45 or 2.46 (which fix Windows 7 compatibility)... weird.

No source

I don't know. John says he doesn't share the source code. I've been saying that John et al should implement a feature he added that checks his site for updates and will report the current/latest version, and if you hit yes (as in yes I want the new version) it takes you to his blog. Not right to the app. With the Drupal system, we should be able to jump right to the app. But John said not only would it be real easy to do (I think he said 2 lines) he doesn't want every app triggering firewalls. I see the logic there.

Anyway, those bozos don't really know what they're doing. Just looking around the site, it looks like they just know the basics and they fumble through that. They work faster than we do, but do they test as extensively? I don't think they do.

They do have better guides than we do for making portable apps. Compared to our guerrilla field guide, that is. They have screenshots, examples, code samples, etc. Real nice guide that covers the basics. Basically using UniExtract to extract the installer, regshot to see what needs to be redirected, and some very basic NSIS to handle the redirection. Very newbie friendly. Almost makes me feel like I could make a portable app (and maybe I can, but I don't think I should do it at work, and I can't really get the time at home -- maybe when we have that second computer, my wife can only be on Facebook on one of them, LOL).
