Thunderbird Portable and GMX

Hi guys

I have joined recently the portableapps-community and I am really keen on starting to use it with my USB stick.

The only thing that I really struggle with my emails and especially with the installation of my GMX account. Have WEB.DE account installed, that works. GMX doesn't. I think I tried everything now, from changing domains(.de/.net), ports and SSL connections yes/no.

when I try to connect to GMX sometimes it says "timed out" another time "refused" (I think this was with pop.gmx.net)

I really hope someone of you can help me. Would be a shame not be able to use such a smart software...

Thanx in advance.

gmx works fine

so far, but:
I had never problems related to thuderbird with gmx. However it depends somehow behind what firewall etc you are. I did switch my thuderbird account to SSL.
Account settings, pop.gmx.net, port 995, tick SSL in security settings.
This very often bypasses problems on routers and firewalls.

To transmit, you can use SSL too, but it works well with standard smtp protocol and gate too. however dont forget that you need authetication for SMTP there and the user name for it is the GMX customer number and not the mail address as for the pop account.

Ok...

thanks for replying.

It looks like as it is just my corporate PC that doesn't allow it. Have to test it on another one...

example

at work, we experienced at one time no way we were able to send out mail via smtp , this after some automatic update of the firmware in the router/firewall.
After 4 weeks this was corrected with next update.
Later we found we could not use pop protocol on port 110, also after some update on the router. This persists, so we switched to ssl on pop and works so far.
But all those symptoms were not related to gmx only, just to all pop and smtp connections.

I don´t get it...

Hy Otto

Thanks for your reply.
I just don´t make it to make gmx work on the USB drive. It´s weird, having set pop.gmx.net SSL 995, adjusted the SMTP, nothing happens when I want to download messages, even on my personal PC. It has MCAffe, can it has an impact?
It's so strange as Web.de is running well and in general is always the other way around.
Now, as said, when I want to download gmx emails, thunderbird asks for my password, what is fine. But then having typed it in nothing happens anymore. No indication on the task bar, everything just disappears...start to get annoyed to be honest....

second installation didn´t work as well...

I did all what you said, no change....

Even though I don´t expect any changes where can I change the timeout connection?

I have a hama 16 gb usb stick. Was the best and fastest they had...

I can´t launch even Open Office as well..what a nightmare!

ok I see

this all has then nothing to do with the stick itself, but there might be something mixed up on your stick software completely.
If there are other software doing problems and operate unpredictable, I would go for reformating the stick and start all over.

It looks to me that some files are missing or damaged.
If you are not behind any very special firewall, gmx will be certainly one of the services which will work any time. And if it does not work because of some strange firewall settings, then all other similar services will not work either, e.g. in my case there were no pop communications possible at all.

And from what you mentioned , if you just call for mails from gmx and you are asked for password and then nothing happens more, this is looking to me more as if the password user name is not matching. Try to use also for the pop the customer number as username, it is equivalently valid as your email account.
The pop protocol is very simple operated by very few simple text commands, so there is no way it works only half unless some big part of the software is lost or badly damaged.

Did you try to send any mails via gmx? Does that work?

Are you sure you have new unread mails in your gmx mailbox?

timeout setting: options, andvanced, network&space

Use Different "User Name"

kakalumba,

had to solve the same problem in TB the other day, also with an GMX account. Sending via SMTP worked, but not receiving (though the identical settings in my standard email client worked fine).

Try replacing the entry in the User Name field. GMX accepts either your full email address(es) or your customer number as "User Name". If you got an email address in the "User Name" field, replace it with your customer number, and vice versa. I had to replace my customer number in TB with one of the two email addresses I'm using. Looks almost like the GMX server doesn't accept the same "User Name" if it appears in different clients.

yes right to some extend

Yes the problem with interrogating the pop server from different clients comes up with gmx when time between the interrogations is short. They have mechanism preventing more then few server requests within short time. So when one client picks up mail and is set to collect mails every 5 min or so, the other client will not have much luck.
And yes to change to customer number is well recommended in case of time outs. Particularly it is then useful to set one path to mail address login (e.g. pop) and use number for the smtp then.
This avoids some problems with the pop-before-smtp mechanism also included at gmx.

They simply try to please everybody, but this is not possible in all cases.
