problem:
I stuck my usb drive into my comp at work today and when i tried to run Firefox and Thunderbird portable using pstart (then directly) the .exe file just deletes itself...
The base .exe file in the apps folder is still there but this appears to be a raw version without any portable apps gadgets (or my bookmarks/email for that matter)
Tried copyiong over the .exe files from a friends drive only to have them dissappear again! (tried this like 3 times now...)
any ideas?

It's detecting a false positive and, it's stupidly set to auto-delete "threats" with no prompting (it probably came set like this by default). There were a rash of false positives this week.
Until your antivirus vendor fixes their issue, you're out of luck.
Since this is the EXACT same issue with your copy of Thunderbird Portable, I deleted the duplicate thread.

A worthy attempt and, if i was using it in isolation, I would agree that is the problem.
However, sitting next to me I have a friend using exactly the same app under exactly the same system with exactly the same network-run virus protection without this problem, also I myself have been running the app with no problems for months, and we have not updated our virus protection...
any further ideas? (sorry if my tone sounds sarchastic, I'm genuinely greatfull for yourefforts)

Seen it many times. Most likely, the one system is set to scan external devices, one is not.
There's no way at all for the launcher to delete itself. Even if it wanted to, it would fail since it's own process would be locked by the OS.

I think NSIS copies itself to the TEMP directory to run. We exploit this fact at school, and make scripts filled with MessageBoxs. We put them on our USB then when someone logs on, we run and yank.

NSIS copies internal stuff (like the registry and newadvsplash plugin) to the TEMP directory to use them, but the actual NSIS EXE is run directly from where it is.

can i somehow protect my USB drive from any sort of program that deletes stuff on it?

When any portable drive is plugged into a PC, it's under the control of that PC. The only exception is if you have a read-only switch that you turn on. But then you still won't be able to run it.
