Hello,
Is there a way to pin a portable application on the task bar (or in the menu)? I am not interested in pinning and using a second copy of Firefox as discussed in a previous discussion, but I would love to put a shortcut of "StartPortableApps.exe" in the taskbar.
Alternately, I am looking at a less cumbersome way of starting PortableApps. Right now, the following happens when I insert the USB key
– System churns for a few seconds and finally shows the "Auto Exec" window
– Then I have a list with uninteresting choices (Import photos, read with Windows Media...) and, at the very bottom "Open folder and show files", which is what I select
– I then get the Explorer window where I select "StartPortableApps.exe"
Is there a way to either (by order of preference):
– Pin a shortcut (or a local copy) of StartPortableApps.exe, which would allow me to access quickly to the PortableApps menu
– Automatically get the Explorer window as soon as I enter my USB key (i.e. shut off all Auto Exec options)
– Add StartPortableApps.exe to the list of options in the "Auto Exec" window
Thanks.
When installed, StartPortableApps should be an option. Try reinstalling the base package first.
I'm pretty sure you can pin anything to the 7 bar. Did you try?
If you want it to only autorun on your computer, this is an old program John made. Still works, you just have to drag it to the startup folder.
Insert original signature here with Greasemonkey Script.
Thanks every one. I typically move my key between home and office. My home computer works on XP and indeed, I see the StartPortableApps option in the Autorun menu. But with my office computer on System 7, it is not even an option. So the Autorun solution looks interesting and I'll try it Monday.

On my home machine I'm using Win7, and have the same issue. I tried using the autoexec.bat option, but I don't think Win7 likes that either, but would be interested in options that anyone finds.
I used to sign here, but the ink keeps smudging on my screen.
The things to automatically start are specified in Autorun.inf, and we do that automatically - it's just that the greater security in Windows 7 has stopped autorun altogether, I believe.

I meant playing with the autoexec.inf - .bat is showing my age I guess :8)
I guess it would be up to you if you want to change the security settings in Win7 then, but it might be easier to just create a shortcut in your QuickLaunch toolbar, or on your desktop and initiate it from there.

Thanks, but the Quicklauch toolbar does not work the same way with System 7 as it did with previous systems.
Previously, one could just press on Alt and drag an icon in the bar and it was done. Now one needs to go in the "All programs" menu and pin its icon either on the task bar or in the Start menu. It suits me, and once I got past the learning curve it's great, but the problem is that it is impossible to pin a portable app (or even the "StartPortableApps.exe") to either of those locations.

I just pinned Appetizer to my taskbar to test. Seems to work fine like that. Just drag the StartPortableApps.exe to your taskbar, it should say 'Pin to Taskbar' and then just drop it there.
The QuickLaunch toolbar can be restored to Windows 7 quite easily. Google had no trouble finding some step-by-step instructions to help me restore it.
That's one of the first things I did when installing Win7 was re-enable the QuickLaunch bar. Once it's running it works just the same as it did before. The shortcuts that are created are stored in a slightly different place in the user's profile, but they're not hard to re-find.
