Hi - I can't seem to log into pidgin portable. My understanding was that the USB version would work regardless if the company has it blocked or not since it is not installed onto the computer.
Do I have to change anything to make it work if the company has messaging blocked? I am not trying to slack or not work - I put in many hours at work and would like to have access to chat with my kids when necessary but unfortunately the company doesn't allow any time of messaging.
Please advise. Thanks.
I am not saying this is your problem, it may be some other problem and someone else that knows pidgin can address it if it is,
But, your company can block any kind of external communication they want, even if the app is portable it has to use their network and they can block all kinds of things, ports, protocols, and the like, or even particular apps.
Good Luck,
Tim
Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?
As Tim said, your company can choose to block whatever Internet traffic they see fit, and whether Pidgin is portable or not, it still has to use the Internet to be able to work.
I urge caution when trying to circumvent company restrictions, many employers don't look upon it too kindly.
Perhaps you can find a viable alternative method of communicating such as text messaging. It probably won't work either but have you tried Meebo.com?
Thanks for the responses. I have tried Meebo and it does work - it's just not as convenient but it does work.
Thanks.
Have you tried MirandaPortable to see if it does the same thing? Pidgin is definitely more user friendly but if Miranda has the same problem then you know there's a good chance that it's your company doing something to block IM traffic.
If Miranda works but Pidgin doesn't then you know that something else is going on.
Miranda is not working either but I'm having a hard time with Miranda even on my home computer - it's not that user friendly.
Thanks.
I just want to point out that Gmail [if you use gmail] has a built in messenger. You can, within Gmail itself, Instat Message other who have gmail. Their messenger also supports AIM. If your kids use AIM you can chat with them from within Gmail.
Moreover, if you have a Yahoo account. You can chat with your Yahoo contacts from within Yahoo mail as well. Yahoo mail now has a built in messenger. I would assume that you can chat with MSN contacts as well, since Yahoo and the MSN protocols are able to communicate with each other.
Check if any of this two work and set things up. It is easier if you set the contacts and all at home using the stand-alone software [this for AIM, Yahoo and/or MSN contacts], so at work all you have to do is login, test and hopefully enjoy!
