Difference between "PortableApps" and "Portable..."

HI,

I use "PortableApps" for about a Year, and I must say, it is great. But today a study colleague shows me an other site:
**************** Edit: better to delete

What is the difference? The design looks similar, but the one site use a red color with a white arrow on a grey background, an the other site is designed in blue, withe the white arrow on a golden background.

I don´t understand why Sad

They are illegally using

They are illegally using copyrighted images from PortableApps.com, using many of our apps and passing them off as their own, and they host packages of many illegal applications

Developing on the subject...

PortableApps.com is a legit site, that makes programs that are OpenSource portable, and more recently, freeware programs, when John has the proper consent to make such portable.

The site you see that is hosted on a popular blogging platform is using similar branding and similar images on purpose, as to blend in with PortableApps.com, it posts portable programs originally made available on this site, with launchers similar to the ones on PortableApps.com without fullfiling the proper GPL requirements of the original launchers, and it also hosts illegally portabilized programs, that were made without the proper consent of the software manufacturers and that break several software licenses and laws.

As they have violated certain trademarks from PortableApps.com, broken the GPL license of this site's apps and launchers, and with John's attempts to distance this site from that one totally frustrated, this site has bitter relationship with that one.

@John: Reporting

I think John can try using this to try to hit it up with that guy (he owns the trademarks/copyrights for that stuff).

we had a team dedicated to that. I don't know what happened to it, but yeah. He's not going away and no one has offered a satisfactory solution.

My Solution

Get John to report it (He's the only one that can do it from what I read, because he owns the trademarks/copyrights.)

Insert original signature here with Greasemonkey Script.

What's strange is why he's

What's strange is why he's doing this.

There's no way to find out who the author really is. He's left no trace of who made the site. And if there is any, only google can obtain it.

What exactly is his goal? It seems like it's just to get big companies angry.

Not working

If getting "big companies angry" is his goal he's not succeeding. No one has sued him, no one has sued his host. That is how "big companies" respond to thievery and put the thiefs out of business. And that hasn't happened which leads one to believe they don't care and if the owners of the products don't care why should anyone else??

Some say it's illegal

I think all this stuff is not about the Site Should Not Be Named but about the PortableApps crew itself. The site mentioned, by using PortableApps terminology, "stole" the PortableApps format and some of the launcher code, maybe, also offering a wide range of (sometimes even commercial) applications.

Personally, I do not care (maybe neither the author) if someone create a launcher for a _freeware_ application.

Might be right, but by using

Might be right, but by using all the trademarks, signs, pieces of code and apps from portableapps.com, he could put portableapps.com into a wrong view.
If people will know the unnamed site as shipping warez and other illegal things, they might connect this to the stolen things, which were from their source on actually good and legal pieces of software.
