Source code

Howdy,

It looks like a good start, but a few things:

1. You must release the source code and have it under an OSI-approved license in order to post it here. The rule applies to everyone equally, even if you intend to later release it. Please do so or I will have to remove your links.

2. Much as I appreciate wanting to include the PortableApps.com logo, please refrain from using the logo for now since this app isn't published by this site.

3. Are you sure it's 2000/XP only? I'm working on a new menu in Delphi myself (similar look and feel) and it works in Win9x fine. Is it some component you're using that is 2000/XP only?

All that said, it looks like a good start and I'd love to see your code to see which approach you're taking (I've been debating a couple different routes with mine... and it's unfortunately been on hold while I get all the apps renamed and back up to speed).

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

I try to answer to your questions

I try to answer to your question...

1. For the OSI licence i haven't see it in the developpement tutorial. SO i post here to have a return on the application in the first time. I prefer made a good application before choose a licence (GPL for the moment but i must read more before).

2. Sorry for the logo i have just do it because i have do it for my portable apps USB Key. I change my skin for wait approbation.

    For the approch

The menu is based on the windows menu.

  • The menu search the app in the same dir (8 for the moment), get the icon and make them in a menu. In the future i think i made up and down arrow to have more than one app.
  • the right icon are for document.
For the moment there is 4 (My document, My music, My images and my video) if they are not exist try to create them after the user send yes).

    3. For the moment only Win2K and XP because in this version i use transparancy effect and 9x cant do it. I think i'm going to modify that before version beta.

For the code i Send you the project if you want to see.

If you want you can erase this post and we can continu by mail before you have more information...

EDIT : Image, executable skin and link are without portable apps. Say if you want that i remove more information.

    Getting Closer

Removing the ImageEx component allows you to open source your own code, so it's definitely closer, Jolly. But the Delphi library is closed (I'm pretty sure as it's a special Qt-Delphi mix), so it still can't be licensed under the GPL (it's linked to a closed DLL) and it can't be an open source package yet. Is it ImageHoverBtn that requires the Delphi Qt library? As I mentioned in email, I was able to achieve the same effect as your hover buttons using images and frames within Delphi.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

    Have i well understand

If i understand my code can be open but i can't use the qtinf70.dll because this DLL use Qt, from Trolltech.

If the problem is the qtinf70.dll i think this come from a project configuration error (all the component that i use individualy not use this library there is just the 0.7 version that link this DLL)

I try to remove the link to this library.

Thank a lot you for your help and your open source science Wink

    just a suggestion

will either of the new menu systems incorporate the abilty to state/resolve conflicts of program shortcut keys? ie. Alt + Win + F = firefox.

I'm not sure about you guys, but i've now got over 60 apps on my USB, and its kinda getting hard to remember which shortcut key goes with which app...

The Program couldn't be started, because qtinf70.dll wasn't found. A reinstall of the Programm may fix the problem.

Hey Jolly, I love your app. It rocks!

The ONLY thing that is missing in my opinion are settings...
I'd like to be able to have a settings menu where I can turn apps on or off. I have a bunch of stuff in my PortableApps menu that I don't want to show-up on the menu.

I'd also like to be able to create more/different 'My whatever' menu items on the right for my drive. Maybe 'My p*rn' or 'My punk songs', or whatever I want, really!

    Keep up the good work,

    Nice and short

I like it too - the additional features would be nice (esp adding folders on the right side or submenus or shortcuts), but mainly its shorter than the portable apps one and thus works well on my tablet with its smaller screen.

Thanks and keep up the work on it!

    Not a bad start

But I would encourage you to be more original in the future. Right now it's obviously based off of John's design. Try thinking up some useful features of your own that would be useful for owners of a portable drive.

For example, John brings a free space meter along with pre-defined document folders that are only a click away, and integrated backup support. Plus he bases the menu off of one that is already familiar to us. I liked all those features, but they have already been put into an app by John.

Signature automatically removed for being too awesome.
