What file do I need to put on my USB drive so that my computer automatically boots normally from the hard drive?
Currently, the computer attempts to boot from the USB, and then I have to press a key to instruct it to boot from the hard drive.

You need to change it in the BIOS. Press [Delete] when the computer is staring up. Look for Boot Sequence.

I don't want to alter the computer in any fashion. I am using a leased computer at work. Isn't there a file that I can install on the usb drive that redirects the start sequence back to the computer automatically?
That's just the way it works. Annoying isn't it?
You'll simply have to wait to insert your drive until after your PC has started booting.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Winimage has a custom boot sector for floppies, which would transfer control to either the next boot device or the hdd, not sure which, so maybe it can do the same for your USB device if the message from the bios is along the lines of non-system disc or invalid boot device. You should be able to image your drive in winimage, change the boot sector and re-write the image back to your flash drive.
If however, you have a bios like mine, it picks up the flash drive as a hard drive, and changes the boot sequence for no logical reason (especially as I can't find a way to disable this behaviour). The result of this is a warning (tellimg me that the boot sequence has changed) when I start up the computer with the flash drive plugged in, or when I start the computer and the previous startup or restart had had the flash drive plugged in. Does anybody have any ideas on how to fix this one (other than a solid heavy object :). It's an Award BIOS on an ECS motherboard.
