Facebook widget looks unprofessional

I noticed we've added a Facebook widget to the bottom of forum pages. The problem is that it's a collection of random avatars and therefore looks very unprofessional; I would rather see a Facebook button or something than this thing.

Frankly I don't see the point of the widget anyway. If I were into social networking I'd click the Facebook link and go there to see who's a fan (I think that's the Facebook terminology) or not, but I'm not, so I don't particularly like having it shoved down my throat.

?

I dont see a "Facebook Widget" at the bottom. The only facebook thing I see is the "Follow and connect with us" thing on the left hand side of the pages.

EDIT:
Now I see what you mean. I had Adblock so I couldn't see it. I don't like it either.

I turned ABP off, and STILL

I turned ABP off, and STILL don't see a "Facebook Widget" anywhere other than the connect & share button and the "Follow & Connect With Us" Sidebar block.

It only shows up on the main forums page, but it's right below the forum statistics block.

Ahhh. Yes, that's hideous.

Ahhh. Yes, that's hideous. The images should be disabled and just have it a very simple badge that just has the page name with the FAN option. I didn't realize it was that bad. In that case, everyone, I agree. This is a bit obnoxious for it's intended purpose.

I had java script disabled. That is absolutely hideous. I'd say the same if it was twitter Smile

Same here

I don't like it too. It's annoying. And it is the reason why I have now Adblock Plus enabled at PortableApps.com. It's blocking the facebook scripts and other ads now. Sorry PortableApps.com, no more ad revenue. Sad

I dissagree with all of you.....

What the three of you fail to understand is that social networking has taken over society at large and the new way to reach customers is to have a presence at social networking websites. Even companies like Craft Foods (see here) are in on it. If John wants to be successful and give the Portable Apps name a presence, a Facebook and Twitter page is standard procedure to attempt to connect with the general public and spread the word that Portable Apps exists.

I apologize, I did not see the massive "billboard" on the bottom of the "Forums" page. It's over the top and therefore unprofessional.

that large block of member AV's

are part of what is known as a FaceBook Profile Badge. You can have a such a "badge" include images from ones photo albums, or members images and so on.

FaceBook is a useful tool to network people who are interested in similar interests. I have to admit I don't play games or send people little virtual gifts and so on. for me it's strictly professional.

Social Marketing?

I think John was probably interested in getting more people here. Hence the Follow and Connect with us sidebar. (Subliminal message: fix the color scheme.)

Insert original signature here with Greasemonkey Script.

That's not what's being

That's not what's being discussed. The "widget" at the bottom of the forums page is, for lack of better description, hideous.

Wow

While I do allow javascript on our site to allow ads, I have Facebook blocked by default using the FF NoScript Add-on, so I have not seen that before, it's pretty bad.

I know I'm one to talk, but

I know I'm one to talk, but let's let John do what he wants with the site Smile

What we're doing is pushing him to remove the block. (I've learned my lesson).
I think we should just let the topic die, or delete it. Just my opinion.

it all comes back to the

it all comes back to the 'john owns the site, so john does what he wants' mentality. Actual, I agree with it. We volunteer here, so if we don't like it, we can get over it or leave.

It doesn't matter to me, I rarely look at the page and with no script, I don't see it Smile

Experiment

It's an experiment to see how many new Facebook users it would garner over a couple weeks. The final version won't be in that position or that large in the site redesign we're working on.

Lots of sites are adding in direct Facebook badges like that. Wired, for instance:
http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2010/01/ashton-kutcher-is-the-future-of-v...

We will have a Facebook badge of some sort somewhere. But it won't be that big.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Not a problem

I don't have nearly as big a problem with it as some of you. Some of you seem really offended by it, and I don't really understand it.

That said, it is bigger than it really needs to be. The most efficient Facebook widgets show the icon of the Facebook profile, the name, either "Become a Fan" or "You are a fan", whichever the case may be, and that's it. The one in the sidebar (with Twitter) is fine too.

I don't use a single game and only very rarely do the social quizzes on Facebook. I have the updates for all the major ones (e.g. Farmville, Mafia Wars) blocked. I don't see them, unless I'm looking at someone's profile who uses them. (My wife, on the other hand, can dump hours into Bejeweled Blitz, a version of Bejeweled that lasts only 60 seconds. You do the math.) Even without all the games and toys, Facebook is a powerful tool to keep in touch with friends and family. (I just wish it were as effective at searching for people as MySpace is/was.)

...

I recently switched back to Firefox from Chrome (3.6 is really nice) and have Adblock Plus, but it's not blocking the Facebook widget. I thought you guys with Adblock didn't see it...?

NO.

I do believe that I never added a rule for facebook connect at all, and I use the EasyList (USA) in ABP. Yet the block doesn't show up for me.

I meant by default. NoScript

I meant by default.

NoScript blocks all scripts by default.
Take a look, if you allow PortableApps.com, you can see the big facebook block. If you don't allow it, you get the exact image you posted.

.

Even allowing PA.c in NS, I still can only see the little link like in Gizmokid2005's pic above...no other addons that would block it...

Not that I am complaining though...
