Dodgy sites

I thought Winrar was payware i.e. not free.
If I was you I would take down those 2 links, Rapidshare & Megaupload are dodgy sites and host a lot of cracked software.
The copy of Winrar you refer to is probably a cracked illegal version.

Apologies if I am wrong but I don't think I am.

WinRAR Unplugged

Having not tested the links I can verify that it is generally known that there is a portable version of WinRAR made by the publisher, it is called WinRAR Unplugged and it features the same trial limitations as the installable version, and can be registered (legally) the same way. I'm sure there are cracked/pre-registered versions floating around, but the base app is legit.

Regardless of the above...

WinRAR, by the looks of it is paid software, and PA.c probably wont have it here..

BTW 7zip does rar anyway and is free...(and here)

7-zip only decompress RAR files

7-zip can decompress .rar files, but it can't compress files using the RAR algorithm to create RAR files.

Rar rar Ga Ga

Is rar some kind of encumbered format like gif? Apparently, PeaZip can only decompress rar as well.

I use non-portable Izarc myself which I believe compresses to rar. Although I don't remember when I last created a rar file. Each to their own I guess.

Encumbered

Yup. RAR is a proprietary format that was initially only supported by RARsoft. They later released the decompressor for free (but under a non-OSI license). The compressor is closed source and requires a licensing fee.

There's really not much reason to use it anymore. ZIPs are best for folks downloading stuff legitly from websites (since everyone has an unzip program in Windows built in). For your own use, 7-Zip is a better option (since it is free and open source and will always be available). 7z format is in lots of uncompressors now. And it's supported on nearly every OS. The only place RAR seems to be sticking around is with pirated software, in which case they're using a pirated version of WinRAR so cost doesn't matter.

Huh?

It was developed by an individual Russian developer. It's distributed by an independent German company. I don't think it has anything to do with Sun at all.

two different things

You're most likely getting the RAR file extension used for Java archive files mixed up with the RAR compression scheme.

rar in Izarc is a no go

Apparently Izarc is just like all the rest, it supports decompressing of rar but not compressing. Interesting, I never knew that. Shows you how much I care. Smile

As for 7-zip, I'd use that but I'm not so fond of the interface. I do have it in my portableapps line-up as a backup though.

As you say, zip is pretty much the defacto standard built in to most OS's so it's rare that I'd need any kind of compression program.
