17 yr old Windows bug you may want to prevent

Just in case you haven't seen this yet...

Microsoft late yesterday issued its second advisory of the last week, warning users that a 17-year-old bug in the kernel of all 32-bit versions of Windows could be used by hackers to hijack PCs.

The vulnerability in the Windows Virtual DOS Machine (VDM) subsystem was disclosed Tuesday

To mitigate, click on the "Workarounds" section and use the Group Policy console:

but thanks for the info. there is also a bug thats been around for a bit longer. i just dont remember it off the top of my head.

The bug is "old" in that it exists in an ancient part of Window NT, but it was just discovered by a researcher so you should take the proper precautions to prevent a security incident.

I don't understand the attack.

At any rate, if we can run 16-bit stuff in XP, why don't old games work?

DOS/4G perhaps?

A lot of the older games used the DOS/4G system which wasn't built into the Windows kernel.
