Simple Phone Dialer

Hello,

This may be a dinosaur item, but it would be extremely helpful. I'm working out of my home office quite a bit recently and would love to find a simple phone dialer application. I'm spending a good amount of time on the phone so being able to hook a phone line up to my PC, put on my USB head set, dial and talk is all I'm after.

I've talked to may friends, and get pointed to Skype, Google Voice, and a number of other places. Not what I'm after. Don't need, nor want, to sign up for a new pay services when all I want to do is use what I have.

Where's the old Windows dialer?

Thoughts appreciated!!

Mark

That actually sounds like a good idea, given that some people still have (unused) phone lines.
But yeah, majority of people use Skype, mainly because a)anyone with the coding skills to make one of those probably likes his cell phone too much to do so Blum and b)modems are often nonworking in computers (most people don't even realize their existence!).
What are you going after trying to use a computer to dial?

Totally off-topic (wow, like that never happens around here) but I have a computer in use that had no ethernet port. I had to get a pci card for highspeed.

do you have modem?

in your computer?

This is getting quite unusual today , I have really older dell desktop here, but also this one has no more modem and therefore ordinary phone line connection to it.

And once you have such thing as modem, then check what phone application came with it.
But also you will have to know what kind of line you have, is it an analog or ISDN or what ever telephone system?

If you have an older laptop for example, it has modem build in, it has dialing utility on it for sure, since it has also a software in which you can set in which country you are at the moment. The modem parameters are different in each country.
The dialing utility can be provided by the manufacturer, or there is even one from MS.

In any case, you have to solve the 'how connect phone to computer' first, hardware question and any software will not help you here.

Other thing is if you have kind of phone branch exchange and this has some connections via usb or tcp/ip to operate it. At work we operate our phones by our normal network, no other connection needed, but again this is a feature of the particular phone private phone exchange and the software is coming with the hardware.

Yes

I do have a modem. Standard house phone line from Verizon FIOS is what I have plugged into it. There was no modem software that came with the Toshiba Satellite (roughly 3 years old).

Again, I have been on a number of conference calls from home and was just thinking if I could dial from the computer, I could use my USB head set on the call. Now the other more simple option is to go get a headset to plug directly into the phone itself but...

Windows has a dialer, but it's not in the Start Menu.

On Windows XP it's located in %ProgramFiles%\Windows NT\dialer.exe

You can click:

Start > Run

and in the text box type:

dialer

You can make a shortcut of the program itself (in Program Files\Windows NT) and place that in your start menu if you want. There is probably software out there that does what you want.

check in toshiba folder

There should be definitely utilities for setting up hardware. In the Toshiba, it is often a folder and a utility in it to set up and check this and that. Since the modem has to be set up for each country and phone system differently, in this utility there should be also the dial utility. Well otherwise take the from microsoft. (see other thread)

Now the dialer is not the only thing you need. Sound has to be sent to and from the modem. I had a case, where this did definitely not work with usb devices, but did with the mic/ear devices. Was also an old Toshiba Satellite.

Odd

I was playing with Win7 Starter the other day, and there's this thing called "Windows Live Call". Seems to be a calling program.
Maybe that'll work.
